In December, we introduced the wonderful artists who are participating in our Toronto Food Stories Artist Residency.
Now we want to show you a bit about what we got up to as the artists began their journey with us and our community partner organizations. ✨
We kicked off the Toronto Food Stories residency by meeting each other (many for the first time) over a shared meal of jerk chicken, rice + peas, and coleslaw.
The advocacy team at FoodShare - Hansel, Right to Food Campaign Coordinator and Moe, Community Mobilisation Coordinator - facilitated a workshop where we discussed the tensions between food justice, food sovereignty and the right to food:
💭 What are the differences between food as a right and food sovereignty?
💭 What does it mean to take a rights-based approach on stolen land built with slave labour?
💭 How can we navigate those contradictions?
Finally, Ekow - School Grown Youth Engagement Coordinator at FoodShare - gave us a tour of the farm at Burnhamthorpe Collegiate Institute. 🌱
Stay tuned for more about the site visits and artists' journey! 🎨
