I lived on Crescent Rd in the 70's, and many of the mansions were transient rooming houses and were very tired being 70 years old and in need of extensive work, however the oak woodworking was stunning and was everywhere throughout this old houses.

I was born and lived most of my life in Toronto, working downtown as a Paralegal in many of the original office buildings including the "Thompson" Building at 390 Bay St. across from the Old City Hall. Memories of my life came flooding back as these back streets were the streets of my childhood and until I left the legal profession to pursue my art career and moved to Muskoka. There is so much I could say, but I also lived nearby at 49 Glen Elm Ave. which backed onto the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. I had a friend that lived in the house next to Gordon's, and so it was that I got to meet him many times in the 90's, not really knowing who he was. He was keen to sit on his front porch in an aluminum lawn chair from the 1960's, and there was no wall or gate at the time, and so we would strike up conversations about my favorite topics of all things botanical, fishing, camping and the great North. I was raised with classical and war-time music although I was a child of the late 60's and so I didn't connect the songs I had heard on my red radio to Gordon as a child at the time. Some years later after work downtown one evening, I happened to walk by the old Massey Hall, and someone was selling tickets to a Gordon Lightfoot concert for $20. I immediately snapped one up and went inside. He had just recovered from a massive stroke and it was his first concert. I was one of only about 7 or 8 people there and so I sat right up close and got to hear him and his faithful bandmates do a full concert, as if it were just for me. I shyly made my way up to him and although it had been a few years since we had spoken, he remembered me, and I was amazed. Just such a humble, all around GREAT Canadian. I remember when they did a bronze sculpture in Orillia to honour him, and I attended, and I remember him wondering what all the fuss was about. To me, he is the pre-eminent poet laureate, story-telling Canadian musician, along with Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. Thank you for all of the good memories. It looks like the Thompson home was cut in half, modernized and it's not appealing to me. The original homes there are stunningly beautiful, if well kept and properly restored.

All the good people live near the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Some even moved inside to dwell, eventually. Camping and the Great North, yes. Outside of jazz, there are a few others in my music library. Mr. Lightfoot has a big seat ther. Most of his songs. Cheers.

Thanks for the tour Ken, it brought back many memories of living on Crescent Rd. in the 70's. I believe Lightfoot moved to Beaumont Rd. in 1975 the same year as that infamous party of musical celebrities. I was only 15 at the time and lived a 10 minute walk from Gord's old house but never knew it, even though I owned some of his records at the time.

In 2011, my company supplied a special flexible roof coating for the roof which joins the two houses owned by David Thomson. The house was under complete renovation at the time, involving numerous trades. I was fortunate to have a tour of the two buildings. The main lobby entrance had a wall of working monitors which provided live views of the entire house. There was a full greenhouse in the rear.

Cool video! I've worked in Rosedale in recent years. The famous party hosted by Gordon Lightfoot at 5 Beaumont was in early December 1975 when the Rolling Thunder Revue was at Maple Leaf Gardens for 2 nights. Burton Cummings mocks the place and Gordon (lightheartedly) on one of his live albums, recorded in Toronto and Burton refers to Gordon's 'big pretentious Rosedale mansion' although I think it's attractive and I've seen tons of houses I'd sooner call pretentious. Where are the dogs being walked? I'm surprised the streets are so empty. You picked a good time to visit. When I'm there, it's a cast of thousands, working endlessly on lawns, renovations, and we-come-to-you car repairs. And the swimming pool guys. And the tech/ IT/ HiFi/ WiFi guys. And the delivery guys. It's busy in there, for a neighbourhood that somehow has one of Toronto's highest rates of douchie drivers, yet zero traffic lights, and many intersections with no stop signs for anyone. By douchie drivers, I'm not even indulging in a hint of class warfare, the aggressive drivers include those driving to their job sites and those who use Rosedale as a short cut from Bayview to Yonge. At least one retired hockey player lives nearby. At least one of those low rises on Rosedale Road is a co-op, to the tenants' credit, pun intended(!). You passed a Dragon's Den, as it were, early-ish in the video. Bin-Scarth has some impressive houses, especially on the south side. There's one giant stone one in particular, that I find impressive. For the more historic minded, I've wondered when certain Family Compact households of the Family Compact era had to divide their land and houses, because I don't think those Rosedale mansions would have been built as semi-detached houses, no matter big each half was. (I mean the old ones, not the 'newer' ones on Glen Rd) Also, while many houses are huge, they are on surprisingly small pieces of land. Another prominent wealthy (roughly in that order) Canadian has a place near the start of your walk, and I think she bought her neighbour's place because I guess hers wasn't big enough. I wouldn't have particularly noticed, but their rather prominent security presence attracted my attention, and inspired me to google the address. There are a couple of houses that have been empty and boarded up for at least a couple of years, and I wonder what the deal is with each. One is quite spectacular, one is more ordinary, near the top of Glen when Summerhill road keeps changing names (to Glen, then Douglas). Thanks for uploading..!

Ken, how come you didn't mention the Integral House you walked past at the end? It's right next to David Thomson's brown house. It's one of the best known architecturally significant modern homes in Toronto. It was designed by a mathematician who combined math and music elements into its design. It's now owned by other people. In recent years symphony concerts were held there.

Nice mix of architecture. Another delightful little enclave is Wychwood Park (only 2 circular streets really) near Davenport and Christie. Includes the former home of Marshall McLuhan. Nice walk through in a nice neighborhood. I suppose old money isn’t as ostentatious as new money. I wouldn’t be able to tell by looking at the streets and the houses that this was the famous Rosedale. I’m surprised actually that the houses are visible and not covered by tall trees and hedges or tall sold fencing. I think in Vancouver the equivalent old money neighborhood is Shaughnessy on a specific section on the west part of Vancouver. And then there’s also in North Vancouver the British Properties. I don’t think I have ever had th3 occasion to walk through either ‘hoods… maybe one day I will.

These streets and houses seem badly overpriced. When liquidity gets out of hand, the market stops pricing commodities reasonably. I've seen highly priced houses in other locations. Hate Toronto. Too many people. Real estate is ridiculously high. I live in a small town and whenever I go to TO, I immediately feel anxiety beforehand. Beautiful homes you’re showing but some of our homes here, are as beautiful if not more so and they are right on the Lake and so much less expensive! My favourite, Windsor On home is For Sale right now! Just over 3 million. It once belonged to our 21st Prime Minister. (Martin) Look it up. Al Capone used to deal in business there.

The wealth boogles my mind. How are those large properties managed? Seems like actually there is a fair bit of people in the top 1%. I have to say I get annoyed when KZbinrs point the camera at themselves instead of at the topic they are filming. You are the opposite. Thank you. Except, I did wonder what you looked like. A couple of shots of yourself is just fine. Thanks for the tour. 😄

Very nice and thanks for the walking tour! There are dozens of small towns in Ontario with houses as nice or even nicer than those and that cost a fraction of those artificially over-priced homes. Less crime too - although that's changing thanks to Trudeau's catch and release program 🙄. Great video!

Blood money you mean. It's properties like these that have caused the shortage of land to use to build housing on for the majority of Canadians. Tear down those mansions and build affordable housing.

No, no, no 90% of canadas land called crown land. No one can touch it and is owned by a guy named charles across the atlantic. He took it and created his own royal police in Canada in 1867. Only 10% of canadas land is owned by private homeowners. Please do your history research on canadas available land.

@whathandleUtalkabt actually the provinces own more land. Almost 50%. And the Federal Government, with the new budget plans to unlock more federal land to build affordable homes for Canadians.
