Toronto TTC M-1 Subway Train Ride With Operator Toronto Transit Commission

A Toronto Transit Commission TTC cab ride in a M-1 subway train, back in early 1999. I used to frequently ride the Toronto TTC subway to school in the 1990s and got to know a few of the TTC's operators. This video was shot a few months before the M-1 cars were retired and removed from active service.
The Toronto TTC M-1 subway cars, or Montrealers as some refereed to them as, were built by the Montreal Locomotive Works. The 36 unique cars ran on the Toronto TTC subway system from September 30, 1962 and were finally retired May 3, 1999.

The good old days, when the driver actually encouraged you to stand with him as they drove the trains. I even had the privilege once when I was about 8 yrs.old to actually apply the brakes on a train and honk the horn. Long gone now.

I was born in Toronto, so have seen all the different cars that have come and gone. When I saw the opening shot of that cab, I had a real shot of nostalgia!! I'm seeing this 7 years later, but really appreciate it anyway!! Thanks for posting it!

M1s weren't retrofitted with the electronic chimes as they were slated for retirement - the rest of the fleet received the retrofits in the mid 90's.

These trains look similar to the H4 trains; which were the trains that retired from the service in January 2012. It is too bad that I've never got to know and to ride on these old trains because in the 90s, I wasn't living in Toronto yet. I moved to Toronto from Sarnia, ON until September 2005. The only old trains I got to ride when I moved to Toronto back in 2005 were the H4, H5, and H6, but the H6 are still on service on the Line 2 Bloor-Danforth line. I hardly even see the H6 trains operating in service on Line 2 that I've realized that the T1 trains have been operating more often than H6 trains. I can tell that the H6 trains will suddenly retire from the service once and for all sometime this year.

They certainly had a different choice in interior colours. Blue and yellow. Very strange . But it pretty much was standard for transit vehicles of the 60s
