Torque Converter Stator Change, It's fixed!

Mike let me use his shop this week to get the minor car repairs done so we will be ready for Dig or Die this weekend. First on the list was changing the flexplate and while the transmission was down decided to change the stator from a 18 blade to a 15 blade. Let's see if this is a positive change!

TJ....YT Hughes Perf. Ep.5 Torque Converters 101, Pete fully explains the 3 different types of Stall speeds (static, foot break, and low speed flash), Stall speed Stators, Turbines, Impellers, stall speed veins counts, differences, etc. ...The lower count stators are mainly for high horsepower boosted applications like yours. As they need less torque multiplication efficiency. (Really interested though in that data you have, and the real difference on same surface, single change between the 14/15 veins and the 18/21 veins count stator. Those seem like they would be big step differences. Dig or die held on junk surface so softening on bottom end, also equals less on top end, ergo why you are not seeing those same high end mph numbers you get on the high hooking tracks. The smaller stator is just not multiplying the engine torque as much.

With bolt together converters you have the extra bennies of being able to change stators yourself, but it also allows you to see the insides and the workmanship that those of us using welded units do not get to see and can lead to those "omg" moments of seeing how they cut/bend/slot the fins in place. Those fins are fine, and it is spragless! Now I remember you said you were going to switch out the stator but is this an off the trailer race at dig or die? 1 change too many or do you have plenty of data with that stator change only to know instant tune changes necessary to get decent results TJ? I am pulling for ya brother!

have you ever tried machingin the torqque converter stator? is youras a lock up?

Hustlin Horsepower did the same thing with the flywheel with some break clean. I wonder if you guys did it on the same day? Race car problems haha. His still had the teeth but they were ruff!!!!!

Matt at DNR did also and I think JS with the NPK guys in Aussieland and they all did it the same week! Tune for easy start up, power, spin/oiling, ignition, fuel pump, fire in the hole. Get away from those Turbo cold starts with spray cleaner for brakes. Even if flammable it is not a good idea to wash your cylinder walls down with toluene, which is also a real rubber destroyer! Test this, put on a pair of rubber or latex gloves, spray the gloves, leave them wet, now watch them grow over the next few minutes to 3 times the tight fit size while you work. Then figure out how many rubber o-rings, hoses, and the like that simple spray occasionally is affecting. Even with brakes, watch over spray on rubber bushings, lines, boots, etc near brake parts you spray. Worked for a chemical plant during the Jimmy Carter Era gas crisis, and to get us as employees back and forth to work. Our chemical engineers compounded and blended a Tolulene/Methanol blended mixture for fuel that our company supplied us for fuel for more than 7 months (and they paid the fuel taxes too), but in the fuel system you had to replace as much as possible to stainless and Teflon, replace as much of the rubber as possible, but it still took out our rear main seals, pan gaskets, and crank, cam seals, etc, and was rebuilding my holley carb on a bi-weekly basis just burning their free fuel. Still beat waiting in 8 hr. Gas lines daily! And free race gas on the weekends sure as he'll beats today's 22 buck a gal. costs for VPC- 12 or Sunoco Standard 110.

Just go in your Holley and change it to a 152 tooth flywheel.

Broken flywheel teeth just do not buff out, and super glue does not solve the issue, now will welding the tooth back on, if you can find it. Love the air quotes SFI Certified!
