I let my car warm up before hard driving, but I drive fairly gently most of the time. The one time I do accelerate hard is when the engine is warm and I'm on a slip road joining a motorway. Though as my car accelerates quite quickly, that hard acceleration is only for about 2-4 seconds. If you have a powerful car, it's not easy to drive it hard without finding yourself doing silly speeds.

The "Italian Tune up" was a term that was used when mechanics were balancing carbs at a stand still revving the engine, usually Italian sports cars with multiple carburetors.

On a diesel car, maximum torque and maximum horsepower can be at completely different RPM. But in general, a diesel car does not require as high RPM as a petrol car to make maximum use of the horsepower. You can also find websites that tell you at what rpm your car develops all the horsepower. You can also find dyno data from a similar car model that you have

I ride a 2012 Honda CBF 1000 FA and bought it 3 months ago as my first motorcycle. It seemed to be a bit unhappy around 3000rpm and knowing that Honda engines are built for high rpm, I took it to the redline at 10.000rpm for a short while with RON98 premium gasoline. Now it runs much smoother and the engine overall seems to handle in a more happy way. I know that it shouldn't be done too much due to wear, but from time to time (on a empty road where law enforcement is abscent) I redline to heat the engine properly

I have a couple of vehicles: Chevrolet Spark 0.8L for city driving and easy parking. It doesn't like the high revs but i take it out of town once a month for a 50km run. Fortunately the gear ratio is short so 130km/h in 5th gear is around 4200rpm. I take it to 150km/h at around 5000 and keep it like that for like 25km. I can feel the smell of sulfur sometimes, but when i idle it later during city drive i can feel it running way smoother. I also have a Ford Focus 1.0 Ecoboost that i use for inter-city and also city drive. It sounds like it loves spinning at around 4000rpm and goes all the way up to 6400rpm. But it is a new engine so i am not noticing any changes afterwards like i see with the Spark. But hell, i love when it pulls nicely at around 4000rpm in 6th gear around 165km/h.

Obviously it depends on the Engine in question. Some love High revs and show no issues at all being driven like that.. Obviously VTEC engines for a start.

I’ve got a little 1.4 Fiat 500 and the auto transmission always wants it around 3500 to 4500 RPM and it feels very happy to do so, going beyond 4500 sounds like the little engine is forcing itself so I don’t get up there very often, but I still do from time to time and mostly inadvertently when I need to get up to speed. Though the car sees lots of traffic where it barely gets up to 2500 by itself, that’s Mexico City rush hour for you. However in my dad’s Seat with a 1.6 I am more than happy to rev it out all the way, the engine sounds pretty happy up there, but in turn if you drive that car in full auto without sport mode it just always wants to shift at 3500 or below, it’s like it doesn’t even want the power at city speeds. Finally in my mom’s 3.6 V6 minivan the tranny always wants to keep it at around 2500RPMs with city driving but as soon as you get on it it doesn’t scare itself out of the redline, quite funny lugging that huge thing around.

Can we cruise at high rpm? What should be the range of rpm when cruising on the highway?
@AsteroSSB
@AsteroSSB 14 күн бұрын
Cruising at high RPM doesn't really point out the benefits of the high RPM operation. You can be at high speeds, but low engine load which will not produce a beneficial amount of exhaust gas and heat, you will just run the engine at inefficient range. What you need is a good amount of road, having a good amount of airflow for cooling and have the gas pedal pressed to the max. So if you cruise, you need for example 160km/h in 4th gear at around 5000 RPM and if it is uphill even better so your pedal is pressed hard and you are approaching but not meeting the redline and cutoff RPMs.

The automatic in my car with a small turbocharged engine lets it hit or even stay a while at max RPM every time I step on the throttle. Usually, it happens several times my every ride. I don't worry about it. No problems so far.

Perhaps the interesting thing is how many horsepower the car develops at 3000 rpm. on paper a diesel car may have less horse power but at 3000 rpm the difference may be very small. on a diesel with 170 horsepower and a petrol car with 220 horsepower, for example. then the diesel fuel has a certain importance as well

My Skoda octavia 2015 2.0 tsi is 1 lakh kms old, i try to avoid redline it now for longer duration. These things have so many variables if its safe or not. I specifically redline my 2 lakh kms old diesel truck after few days, and it throws BLACK SOOT, doing so results in no black smoke for few days. Repeat every few days

4A91, dead below 2000 rpm. Red-lined, max throttle regularly on motorway. I don't cheap-out on oil but relatively low yearly miles, far from suggested oil lifetime. I feel like you can't really use it any other way 🤷‍♂️.

It's a limiter for a reason right? Lol My 1.8T doesn't see the limiter all that often but it definitely sees 6K at least a couple of times a week. Not sure what the factory limiter is/was but I have it set to 7k. It's a manual with a bigger turbo so below 2K is pretty gutless so really between 2k and 5k rpm is where it's normally at. The new engine I'm building is almost done though! Other than the water pump I'm waiting for, I just have to bolt on all the little stuff like oil cooler, manifolds and accessories. I still need a 240mm clutch and 1000cc injectors.

My neighbor has a 5VZ-FE in his 1996 4Runner with 280K+ miles and he redlines it at every opportunity he can even on cold starts. He also runs it wide open for many miles at a time going around 80 MPH because it has bad ignition coils and loses 2 cylinders when under load. More often than not, it's low on oil too. Yet somehow it refuses to die and the truck only left him stranded once, which was when he broke the driveshaft off roading.

Thanks for the excellent education in diesel engine technology, im now thinking of putting a GTB2056VK into a mk6 golf gt tdi 140 i just purchased. Maximum torque is developed before maximum revs so why rev a standard engine to this which is supposed to last many thousands of miles before a rebuild more revs=shorter engine life
@MrSonicAdvance
@MrSonicAdvance 18 күн бұрын
Torque isn't really relevant to this discussion. A high torque engine just delivers more power at low RPM, it doesn't mean the engine's more powerful at low RPM than it is at higher RPM, it just does well at low RPM.
