*We got some clarity on what in the fresh hell this actually is!* For 1, yes it's made in Japan. When we bought this impact last week, only the XWT19XVZ was available and Makita hadn't announced it yet. Today Makita announced the standard XWT19Z in an email, and it can now be found for $329. The only difference from what we can tell is the aluminum hammer casing won't have the ground cable coming off it like ours does which you can see @ 7:00, and board shielding - the V model can be used around high voltage power lines 'n such. So ignoring the V model, it's basically a pin detent model for the same price, much smaller hammer and less power, and took nearly a decade to come out with it. And also sounds like a death sentence to any hope of an actual new gen coming out if this is the stuff they are working on. We'll be updating the rank chart with pricing and such, which brings this to 352.1 points and places it... exactly where we put it in this video in the ranking :P

Haha, I love this. Makita's all like don't worry folks, it's not that we took 9-10 years to make a gen 2 and it's worse. We're actually not even working on a gen 2, just putting smaller parts in the impact we made a decade ago and offering it at its higher 2024 $329 price! So we actually didn't make anything new, just made an old tool a bit worse. Glad we could make everyone happy with that news. BTW here's a flyer we're sending out today about the new XWT19Z that says "more power" just to add some confusion in case that was all too easy to follow :D

I think this is meant for bridge builders and industrial installation types with torque specs, not high torque automotive. A search on Makitas site for "high torque" has the XGT and all the previous models come up, but not this one. It being lighter also is well suited to overhead work, like working on gas mains, metal girders, etc.

I would have been one that buys this tool. The packaging shows torque in the 900+ range which would have been good enough for me. Watching this video sours me on the new tools from the brand. I started buying teal in the mid 2000's. I've been very happy and to date, only use makita and a set of M12 drill and impact tools I won at work. I have used many landscaping tools as well as the mechanic tools. Even the portaband. It's all good stuff but obviously being left quickly behind by most any other brand. I read not too long ago that their CEO admitted the brand had been concentrating on 40V and the LXT line had been suffering and he was going to fix that. Welp, it hasn't been fixed yet.

It's also a reason how Makita has a million grinders because not all grinders are alike, and in some cases you need certain features and in other cases you don't. This is not a full send ugga dugga models this is a lighter weight higher rpm model to do massive amounts of nuts when joining together steel plates and girders and such. The advertisement pictures and videos indicate as much.

@@Fireballsocal read the manual for it and you'll see it achieves the same fastening torque spec numbers as the XWT08 that TTC compares it to in the same or less time. The instruction manual lists all the models in the same manual as comparison, and the 19 comes in underweight, higher speed, and a 1/4" shorter. It is 3 seconds for an M30 bolt (1-1/4") to reach it's fastening torque and 2 seconds for an M24 bolt (1") to reach it's fastening torque for both the 08 and the 19. So this model has done it with less power, higher RPMs and lighter weight. It's not a high torque, but achieves the same real world results necessary for a high torque at the torques that count, and you best believe industrial installs will be checked for torque.

I couldn't Agree more. Im a Makita guy and love my tools they have lasted so well, not had any problems unlike my Milwaukee m12 stuff (broken switches and batteries that fall out) but they have really given up on mechanics. I think they are still great for framers and landscapers though.

Ahh, good detail there. None of their features, manual or email announcement mention any of this. Edit: Their email that went out about it today says "more power. More control" nothing about anything else. Looking inside this thing, the aluminum hammer housing has a ground cable coming of it to the board. That's all from a visual standpoint.

She's a real heartbreaker. I've been waiting like 10 years for an 18v cordless framing nailer. They finally just came out with one and it's so far only available in 21°. Haven't been able to find any info on a possible 30° release. To anyone not familiar, that means while occasionally code complaint, they "flag" nails, which means a chunk of the magazine belting becomes lodged under the head of the nail.( the nails in a 21° are plastic colleted/belted) They blast your face with plastic bits & the angle of the magazine not only holds less nails due to their full round head (as opposed to a clipped head on a 30° allowing the nails to fit more closely together, allowing more nails per inch & without plastic belting) ...but the angle is significantly more obtrusive & more difficult to fit in odd/tight spaces, which is often the case use for a cordless nailer. Bigtime butthurt.

This is for torque to spec industrial installation purposes like bridge building, metal girder, gas mains, etc. the advertising from Makita shows as much.

I think this is meant to be used for utility line work... By linesmen. Similar to what Milwaukee has (just not the 7/16 hex version). It's not meant to be the fastest or the most powerful impact. Kinda surprised that it doesn't feature a lanyard ring though. Just throwing my two cents out there.

When I was a structural welder I bought an 8# short sledge. I wanted something that could fit in my toolbox but that could do a lot of work quickly. And it did. I could swing it just well enough even one handed that instead of beating on a brace for 10 minutes like the guys with 3#s, I was done usually after one good hit. I think my shoulder was probably a lot less sore swinging a big hammer 10 times a night than a smaller one a couple hundred. I think the idea of derating it for durability is a logical thing to think, but for a tool like this I really don't think it would work. Edit: spelling

You guys should test industrial cordless impact drivers and their accuracy - for example, Panasonic and Makita both make some. We use a bunch of the Panasonic guns at work and you program the torque setting with a remote. They’re sweet, but rather expensive and torque accuracy is somewhat unclear.

As a woodworker, I usually love makita for making tools that just plain work and don't die like the other brands. Fucking milwaukee with their "well it makes more power and then sets itself on fire in the process half a year in and when it does you can't replace any of the parts, assemblies more expensive than the tool only". Of course none of that reliability matters if the tool doesn't have enough power to actually get the work done, which in woodworking thankfully is rarely an issue. Sad to see a tool this underpowered, though I will be interested to see if at least it has a much longer service life. Then again I don't even know if these tools behave similarly to the ones I use in milwaukee being 2 years life max, dewault maybe 3, makita lasting... I don't know, haven't broken one beyond economical DIY repair yet. All in all, these numbers are sad, though I would love to see something on reliability. Though that'd be very hard to test. As someone that runs mostly makita I expect reliability over anything else. But even then I expect better power than this come on.

if you want to see reliability just get the more powerful XWT08Z and pocket some $140 in the process. I owned that tool for a couple years and never had any issues with it. When I sold it it looked and worked as day one. I moved to another battery platform so the only 2 Makita tools I had at the time had to go. Fun fact that XWT08Z was made in USA, Makita has a factory about 1hr away from Atlanta

Fellow Makita carpenter & I whole heartedly agree. They've introduced their new 18v framing nailer in 21° with no talk of a 30°. It's been proven the "full round head" has no bearing on a nails ability to "hold", resist shear or anything else. It's entirely diameter & depth...still codes often require full round head and therefore manufacturers make 21°'s first if not exclusively. I've patiently waited 10 long years for a cordless makita framer & there's no talk of a 30° release. That...and the lack of basic xgt tools, no multi tool?? Orbital sander, any sander, jigsaw, cut off tool/mini grinder, only a 23gauge pin nailer? The only advantage I personally see to that lineup is the 10-1/4" rear handle saw (which absolutely could get by as 18v X2/36v) , a couple larger grinders & sds hammer drills. Even then, (with the exception of an X2 80v hammerdrill) their their 36v counterparts are only marginally surpassed & often can't justify the price point. That...and while reliable, it would be nice to see some lxt battery advancement/capacity. Still love Makita, but some of their descions really leave me scratching my head.

I bought my first ever yellow tool strictly because of your video you did on the DCF 900. I had a gen 1 Milwaukee half inch and I was very impressed by it until the first time I had to bust the lug nuts off my truck with that DCF 900. It hit the hammers literally once and spun them right off. It's been over a year now and I and personally responsible for at least another dozen of those DCF 900s being purchased by friends and co-workers. Because anytime somebody can't get a nut off the DCF 900 has been able to do it. I had to get the 7/8 bolts out of my excavator bucket and my buddy's air powered earthquake could not do it even with the inertia socket. DCF 900 did it in less than 3 seconds. I've actually damaged some impact sockets with the DCF 900 so I really don't know how anybody could top that.

Out of curiosity, where does the high torque actually help? I ask as the higher torque Dewalt and Milwaukee I've used usually twist or snap off bolts rather than loosen or tighten them, regardless of grade or application. Recently with some frame bolts, the older corded impact would get them to a point then would quit turning them. Borrowing a Milwaukee snapped them off. Putting a pipe on a breaker bar, on the other hand, did get the other ones out without breaking them. So, what application is the high torque numbers useful in, aside from sales?

The utility is a class used for lineman. The impact on the poster is a lineman’s impact it has a 7/16 quick chuck. We use them to bore poles with wood auger bits and to tighten bolt as up to 2”. I prefer the Milwaukee my self but the inverter owned utility I work for loved the Mikita.

Well, they have been lacking in that department as well, Brad nailer is ancient and bulky, router is like 10-year-old design.. yea it was the first on the market but hasn't been updated since, and the 40v version of it is the exact same. Sanders havent been updated in years too, I haven't seen them do anything special except for impacts and the 40V stuff is basically just slightly better 18V stuff with much higher prices. They have been making a lot of outdoor power equipment and camping gear that I dont need or want...

Makita seems to have the Japanese and Asian market in a firm grip. They don't care about anywhere else. Would be interesting to see what their made in Japan exclusively for sale in Japan "high" torque can do. AvE has shown us that Japanese market Makita is more sqookum.

That's a myth. AvE and PF both did "Japan vs China", but in both cases they were wrong because they were testing newer version vs older version (TD172 vs TD171). This happened because the US gets tools 6-24 months later than Japan. Makita tools have identical components no matter where they are made.

Teal's drills don't last long at all, My Mustard drill has been kicking for 5 years and all the other mustard-colored tools for some time without issues. My coworker uses mostly ketchup and he's not had any issues either.

@@John-771 For me its been the opposite. I burned out 2 impacts and had a drill in for repairs twice...XR no less. Work has about a dozen mustard drill and impacts and we replace a couple a year. Fuel seems to fair a bit better, mostly in the hands of electricians instead of milwrights, but brushless non fuel mil have been junk, worse than midgrade brushless dewalt. Ergonomics wise I have smaller hands and I'm not a young guy, nore a 600 lb gorilla type. Makita feels better in my hands, though guys with huge hands tend to find those small quality of life enhancements for me a bit tight for them. I have shown a LOT of people how much nicer my makita is compared to my XR for low vibration, well placed switch and hand position on the impacts/ drills. The 18 volt impact hit harder than dewalt in real world application. Tightening m12 bolts that require 100 ft lbs. Neither can do it, but the dewalt XR comes up shorter in our shop on a 5 AH battery. Only by 5 Ft lbs. I do like the variable speed on it, but plan on getting teal impact wrench 3/8 or 1/2 with var speed next time. The brushless makita I have is just variable trigger pull and maxes out on our M10 screws at 60 Ft lbs. Same for XR 1/4 driver impact. We don't keep smashing it for 10 seconds because time is money. MAYBE the XR can keep hammering it past the makita, but pull for pull it falls a bit short without hearing it hammer for an extending period. I tired my dads Milwaukee fuels, decent ergo, but honestly all the tools from the big 3 have this feel of skimping out. None of them are like they once were. My dad still has his 14.4 volt tools, 19.2 craftsman, and his 18 volt dewalts. He bought a converter to work with the new 20 max batteries. I had my 9.2(I think) volt makita drill and reciprocating set till the movers "lost" it in our last move. None of these companies are making pro grade tools anymore, prosumer with expensive price tags, yes, pro level tools that don't need fixes on the regular, not so much. I had ridged for a time, but honestly for all the hype gen 4 was great for a home gamer, but I smoked out 3 fuegos drills, a brushless twice and a brushless impact once. The brushless circular saw and grinder, while not bad at all, came up far short once I could afford an XR 71/4 circ daw from dewalt. Sold off all my ridged, bought dewalt. Sorry for the length on this. I like my dewalt at home, but for all day at work Makita puts less wear on my joints. It would be helpful if you could just pull the trigger at home depot(Rona, I think owned by lowes now, does it in Canada...sometimes) So you could feel the tool operate before purchase in direct contrast to other brands. Not sure if the US Makita under X instead D models internationally are any different. Might be a factor too??? But if you use your 1/4 impact and you can find a brushless makita 1/4 impact, compare them directly. Dewalt rattles like a bunch of bones in a garbage can. To me that is vibration and loose tolerance that is slowly doing damage inside and why they dont last as long under our shop conditions. My Makita are about 5 years old now and have been great so far (knock on wood). Of course YMMV on a different work site/conditions.

I was considering ditching my 4 Milwaukee high torque impacts and switch to Makita 3/4 XGT 40V once for all, but the 40V battery price and the bottom battery rubber mechanism issue kinda set me back. Milwaukee really is a good balance between overall design and tool price, the M18 battery platform is also not so cheap and not so expensive. Most importantly, they keep refined their tools and come up with newer models at fair price.

Some years ago, I saw a Makita generator. The pull cord was located BETWEEN engine and generator. No kidding. Replacing a cord on the recoil start required separating engine and generator. That shop stopped selling Makita years ago.

Great video. If I would have started from scratch, I would be a DeWalt guy. I purchased the only socket driver at the time made by Milwaulkee. Now, all of my tools are red. Milwaukee high torque drivers don't last as long as DeWalt in my shop and have better customer service.

you absolutely tested the wrong impact. XVZ is always a more expensive SKU and has been around for ages on a few of their other tools. For the exact reason, I'm not sure, compare the insides of an XVZ and there might be a clue. Their idea of a "utlitity" impact might include something with how it functions around highline utility wires, but I'm just speculating at this point as I'm not sure if proximity to high voltage lines causes cordless tools to malfunction or not behave properly. XWT08XVZ is $400 and has always come at a price premium over the regular 08Z going back well over 5 years. Same as the new XWT19XVZ. XVZ has no place on your charts either way. It's an automotive focused channel and prices would always be for the cheaper and always more available Z only model. You won't find an XVZ SKU impact in a Home Depot, it's essentially a niche special order SKU. Both the XWT19Z and XWT08Z are currently $330 and the 19Z is not marketed as a "utility" impact. All the XWT19 really is is a pin detent version of the old XWT08. Of course it's still bizarre that it came so late and the hammer is so small. Pin detent high torques are usually tuned lower otherwise you end up with anvil failures like the Dewalt 899 pin detent version would have. But this seems like it's tuned down way too much to the point they were just too lazy to properly dial things in. I'm sure there's a cut down XGT coming. But it's a bad look having a pin detent XWT08 finally come out all these years later and then dropping it ahead of whatever else would be a true upgrade to the OG. But to be brutally honest, it's also a bad look for your channel that you're doing a bunch of punditry while comparing the wrong model wrenches. This has been a big issue with AVE in the past and PF has made similar mistakes as well. But at least PF doesn't do so much with the punditry side of things so I think it's still more than fair to call you out on that. Would like to see this corrected, but it probably doesn't matter at this point with all the people on the internet who wouldn't give anything like this a 2nd chance to understand it better. Makita is really weird and they're definitely shooting themselves in the foot with the way this will play out either way. XWT08 needed an update, bad, XGT can be cut down for a new 1/2" 18V model and they just now give the XWT08 a pin detent alternative after 9 years. Beyond bizarre.

I believe the specs are low because of the pin detent anvil. Its literally hollow inside to make space for the ball. Milwaukee also has the gen 3 in pin detent form (2966-20) and its only rated at 1100ft-lbs vs 1500/1600 for the hog ring. Very obviously limited in performance to not shatter the anvil i think.

I love Makita. I like the fact that they aren't constantly rep,acing their products. I've had makita cordless tools, some of which are over 20 years old. None of them have ever failed me. Not once. Not even a broken charger or dead battery. Just because they dont have names like EXTREME, doesn't mean they aren't very good tools. The makita will outlast the Milwaukee by a mile. Personally I don't work on heavy equipment or anything that would need max torque. Even after watching this video I would still purchase the makita.

100% not to defend them, but I do think there is something more to this. Going by the higher price and the strange, specific naming, I really think this was developed primarily for some kind of corporate purchasing/gov contract thing. Like it was developed for PG&E to be strong enough to get stuff open, but not so strong that it obliterates bolts when the dumbass using it decides it would be quicker just to lean into it when putting the decades-old transformer box back together. Makita just made the dumb decision to sell it mass-market, too, not realizing that literally no one else would want this and it just damages their brand. But that's just a theory. A Tool Theory. So some other guy in the comments mentioned this, but it may be a case of that this is actually a "utility" tool, since the 'V' in the part number means it's rated for use around high voltage equipment Did some digging and while none of the documentation explicitly mentions it, all the past 'v' tools mention running a shielded motor for high voltage environments So I think this is a case of ttc accidentally bought a lineman tool due to poor marketing on makita's part It doesn't excuse them not innovating, but at least explains the cost bump for essentially the same tool

We find it doesnt prove much. Like the tests you see with a drill chucked into another drill. The one that shuts off 1st is actually better built, with more protections. The one that runs 50% longer then has heat damage people see as the winner, but is a worse tool. Good tools, especially Makita's, wont let you kill them. There's no replacement for good old fashioned using the tool for a long time.

I wonder if they aren't using the term "utility impact" to signal a shift from emphasizing peak power, which at this level is seldom used, and instead focusing on longevity and practical reliability. Typical impact guns used in a shop are done after about 2 years. Could they be thinking anyone will notice if their models last significantly longer? If so they do not know the markets these days. Two things drive tool sales: rated power and price. Consumers are pretty foolish when they ignore longevity and reliability, but time and time again consumers have proven they will buy a turd on sale over a diamond at list price.

I have the older half inch model of this impact and its great but the lack of detent pin is annoying for me, especially given I work at height a lot. A detent pin would be ideal for me as it secure the sockets better!

I have a old style makita 1/2 inch impact and from what I’ve found it will take out stuck bolts better than my Milwaukee fuel 1/2 inch
