Torre della Pelosa, historic fortress in Sardinia

The Torre della Pelosa is a historic fortress located on a small island between the island of Piana and Cape Falcone. It was built in the Middle Ages to control access to the Asinar Circle and to protect coastal residents from attacks. It was in contact with the other two towers, Isola Piana and Cape Falcone, and was able to play an important role in the defense system of the Sardinian coast.
The tower has a tron-concical shape, a diameter of 16 meters at the base, a height of 10 meters and a barrier wall of about 2.5 meters. It is built of stone and is located at a height of three meters above sea level. The entrance to the tower is accessible through a staircase at six meters from the ground. The tower unit consists of a unique chamber with an attic divided into three holes, each of which can be guarded by a guard. Inside the chamber there is a small room with a window that offers a beautiful view of the sea.
The Torre was probably named after a beach island formerly called “Sa palosa”, probably because of the high estate of sea straw (seaweed) that was visible there in large quantities. The Torre was part of a complex network of fortresses built from the Middle Ages to the 14th century to form the defensive and sighting network of the Sardinian coasts. The tower was probably built before 1578, but there are other sources that suggest it existed in the 15th or 16th century. The torre was equipped with three large cannons that were intended to provide protection against enemy ships.
Today the Torre is a popular destination for visitors to the Stintino beach “La Pelosa”, known for its white sand dunes and picturesque landscape. You can reach the Torre either on foot or by boat. The Torre is a testament to the rich history and culture of the Sardinian coast and a place full of charm and beauty.
