What's it like in Gibraltar? Join me on a Tour of Gibraltar on Spain’s southern coast, a region well known for its towering rock and fascinating military history. The British Overseas Territory situated at the end of the Iberian Peninsula is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar, famous for it's siege tunnels and it's monkeys (actually Barbary Macaques,) Although it covers less than 3 square miles, the strategic location of Gibraltar has made it one of the most fought over places in Europe. For centuries it has withstood political manoeuvring, sieges, battles and today, with its red call boxes, Union Jacks and high street shops, Gibraltar staunchly stands as a small pocket of England in the heart of the Mediterranean.
We start the tour in Casements Square and walk in to Gibraltar town centre towards Main Street, We the pass through Grand Casements Gates and cross the street to explore Ocean Village - The famous marina and site of many bars, restaurants and coffee shops. from there we explore the rock of Gibraltar and it's many attractions including :-
Apes' Den / Barbary Macaques - Gibraltar's wild monkeys in their natural habitat
Gibraltar Nature Reserve, Upper Rock - Gibraltar's most prominent landmark and nature reserve
Mediterranean Steps - UNESCO World Heritage Site Buffer Zone
O'Hara's Battery - Highest point of the Rock of Gibraltar
Skywalk - Glass lookout with spectacular views at the top of the Rock
St Michael's Cave - A natural cave in the heart of the Rock
Windsor Suspension Bridge - A suspension bridge - not for the faint hearted
I also check out the beaches of Gibraltar including
Camp Bay & Little Bay - A former quarry turned into a lido, and a little rocky beach by the cliffs
Catalan Bay - A picturesque village by the sea located on the east side of the Rock
Eastern Beach - Gibraltar's largest beach located adjacent to the airstrip
Sandy Bay - A secluded beach with orange sand from the Sahara
And lastly Gibraltar Airport is listed as one of the most dangerous airports in the World. Not at least because of it's only 1777m long runway, but also because of the 4-lane Winston Churchill Avenue, which is crossing the runway

Great video!! I go to Gib once a year for work, I love the place. It's a Marmite spot, you love it or hate it. The people are lovely, I have many friends who live there. They are fearlessly patriotic and loyal to Gibraltar. If I had the cash I would move there.

I'm a brit who's had the pleasure of visiting Gib on a few occasions. What strikes me most about the lovely people there is that they're (for the most part) so proud of their heritage and identity. More so than anywhere I've lived in GB. I often fantasise about living there. Such a beautiful part of the world. EDIT: This video has brought back many fond memories. Thank you.

We fell in love with Gibraltar after getting married there. We stayed on the Sunborn and we'd highly recommend it to anyone getting married in Gib. We were lucky enough to be allocated a room on the airport side which is away from the bars and a little quieter. Gib is a quirky place which we like. Its fascinating listening to the locals flicking between Spanish and English in the same conversation, sometimes in the same sentence!!

As a child in the mid 1950’s I spent three years on Gibraltar. Two refuelling stops on Vickers Viking to get there and one three years later in a Vickers Viscount returning to the UK. The video brought back many memories. Weekends at Catalan Bay and weekdays at Eastern beach or the Nuffield pool if it still exists.

Wow! Been following you for a while and never realised you did a walk around Gibraltar, and WOW you went everywhere! I have been working in Gibraltar for 15 years and you've reminded me just how great it is. As a cross border worker, I just see the business district area every day and offices and its easy to forget the other side and the top of the rock. You really know the place well, even a few facts I didn't know! The big building near eastern beach are new apartments, supposed to be affordable housing. Soon you won't see cars crossing the runway as the new airport tunnel (Near eastern beach) is due to be opened in the next month or so finally! But you will still be able to walk and cycle over the runway crossing. Great video Tim! The Gibraltar tourist board could probably use your expertise!

You correctly refer to the architecture looking British in some places (the red brick building you pointed out is the British Governor's Residence). Then you say it looks Spanish in other parts. However, the building you pointed out as Spanish looking, and most other traditional residential buildings in Gibraltar have a strong Genoese/Maltese influence. Hence all the Venetian shutters. There were Spanish style buildings at one point, single floor, with red tiled roofs, but those have mostly disappeared as the population expanded, because of the need to build upwards. To a visitor, the most Spanish thing about Gibraltar will the the language you hear on the streets. While the official and formal language is English, informal conversation is mostly conducted in Llanito. That is, a mixture of English and Spanish, peppered with local versions of words borrowed from Maltese, Italian, and Moroccan Berber.

I had the pleasure of going to Gibraltar in January 2017, it was exactly what I was expecting, a real melting pot of a community. The views from the Rock are superb and I was fortunate enough to see northern Africa from the top of the Rock. While I was there, the Apes were going about their business, but one of them tried to snatch a pair of binoculars out of the hands of one of the tourists who went up the Rock at the same time as me. I highly recommend it :)

Did Gib a few years ago. My wife got bitten by an ape that first of all jumped on her back, he stayed there for a few moments whilst we all took photos, he then placed his hands on her tricep, looked around and took a big bite and ran off. My wife went to the first aid point where the treatment for a bite was simply to apply some antiseptic cream. They explained that as the apes lived in isolation they were free from any diseases. Apart from the initial pain, which lessened considerably over the next few hours, she had no lasting effects! There was a tapas bar in the old town, the name of which I forget, which was so enjoyable we went back for lunch the following day. Arriving by air was interesting, as was take off. Let's just say that the full length of the runway was utilised by the pilots 😁

Nice one mate, " Gibraltar born & bred" here living in New Zealand, the other side of the world. Looks like quite a few changes, Camp bay, we used to walk through the tunnel to get there for a swim, & Catalan Bay, we used to walk through the tunnel for a swim & picnic lunch, great days plus my Sacred Heart school days. loved it. I think we didn't call them monkeys in my day, but "Apes" Monkeys have tails, Apes don't (Just saying)

Been to Gibraltar a couple of times and we love it. It genuinely is a little slice of blighty but without the crap weather. The whole place has a friendly vibe and such a lovely atmosphere and theres loads to see and do. The cable car ride is a must do and the views from the top of the rock are truly exceptional. This video really makes me want to return so thanks for a terriffic upload.

Tim, as a fellow Norwich boy can I just say a huge thanks. I lived in Gib, firstly when my Dad was posted there by the Navy in the 70s, and then by choice in the 90s.I love the place so much, and your video highlights why. You have given a truly wonderful impression of a place that is so close to my heart. Gib has so much to offer, and your superb video shows that. I shall be eternally grateful. #OTBC

I served 2.5 years on RAF North Front during 63-65. Worked at Rock Gun, Middle Hill, Spyglass, and the Dockyard Comcentre. Nightshift on top of the Rock on my own was great, fantastic views, and peace and quiet to catch up with my mail. Daytime, the place was overcrowded, and unpleasant. Everything of any interest could be seen in one day. Very good for visiting Spain, and getting out of Gib. I was glad to leave it! Looks like it's changed some now. Just as well! .

Never realised just how British Gibraltar really is...looks lovely, but personally I go on holiday to get away from “Morrison’s” and the like. That said, I can see the appeal and of course the great climate. Loved the video, very informative...and maybe we will pay a visit to the rock one day..👍

This is a really great video. I used to live in Gibraltar 2007 - 2009, so it's great to see how many houses and public areas have been renovated and given a new lease of life, as well as seeing new things such as the suspension bridge.

Going back to the 1960s, every single time I got to that part of the world, Spain had closed access to Gib. Now I see why. It is infinitely more interesting than any place within 100 miles. Looks like something there for all ages. There's a sameness about coastal development in Spain now. Beyond the pool, the beach or golf course, it has few attractions for families, for kids & adolescents most of whom love tunnels, caves, suspension bridges, macaques, winding trails, old armaments. Gibralter would get them away from video screens without coaxing. I can't believe all the ways of getting up that big rock. By car even! Then, did I not see an elevator? The town looks a perfect blend of old and new*. I may never get back to that part of the world, but at least I know all that I missed. This thorough tour will inform a whole new generation. *Except for the cookie-cutter development shown @ 23:18. Yipes! Be interesting to hear how that one sneaked past the planning authorities. Rather than pay an architect, some cheapskate found a free floor plan on the internet and built a hundred copies. All-in-a-row. Shame. Those things are hard to undo, and fortunately this video shows it's not too prevalent in Gibralter as a whole. ....... Comments, please.

Tim. This is an incredibly well-done video. A few questions: 1) Did you do all of this in a day? 2) Is the sequence of visits that you showcased in the video the same as what you actually did? 3) How much time do you feel is needed for St Michael's Cave? Once again, fantastic video and those sunsets are to die for.
