Hong Kong Expats' Salary vs Locals' Salary! 人人都話係香港做外國人比較好,但他們真的是高薪一族嗎?香港打工仔被比下去?! 我決定把他們的月薪和香港人比較一下! Do expats in Hong Kong make more money than local people? Lets be facebook friends??: / torgortorres
I suggest you doing this interesting survey in different districts, like Admiralty, Quarry Bay, Kowloon Bay, Tsuen Wan, Tin Shui Wai, Yuen Long etc...there must be expats, but not as many as those u find in Central. Keep it up, you did a good job! At least, I watched the whole video till the end!
Haha I like your videos, every clip of them (actually I only watched 2) has an interesting topic.

Used to work in an electronics company from Italy (an office for two located in Kowloon if not Central). My former boss (originally from Milan), whose title was Director of the company's APAC office, earned upon his first year in Hong Kong around 43,000 HKD/month. Having stayed here for two years, he got a raise to around 52,000 HKD/month. Since he was also a sales manager, he was entitled to a quarterly bonus of around 13,000 HKD. More, as an expat, his accommodation in Hong Kong was covered by the company (an apartment in The Victoria Towers, TST for a rental fee of around 25,000 HKD/month) and the company provided a quarterly retirement bonus (not sure if this was compulsory in the Italian laws) of around 13,000 HKD. He did, as most Hongkongers would believe, frequented the bars in Central and Wanchai at the weekends and led a rather comfy life but he also complained about the company's poor expat package, since quite a lot of his friends (also Italian) in Hong Kong were earning a monthly salary a lot higher than his and could have a far better accommodation (provided by their company, of course) in places like the Mid-levels or Sai Ying Pun.......
@AnsonYMLeung6 жыл бұрын
Further information: He came here at the age of 39 and his last monthly salary in Italy as key account manager was already close to 40,000 HKD/month before tax (excluding the bonuses, of course). Not sure if he was a typical example but I think age, and thus seniority, is certainly a contributing factor since quite a number of them come to Hong Kong to hold senior managerial positions (Of course, there has been a growing number of young Europeans rushing here for more junior positions).The expatriate package per se should also be considered because 1) the salary is determined by following not necessarily the living standards in Hong Kong but those in the society where the company or the said person is from and 2) a highly attractive remuneration is somehow justifiable for having to leave one's formative society for a foreign land.
@Woodland265 жыл бұрын
Your former boss was not paid that well. I know people sent to work in HK, the company hire a long term room for him to stay in Mandarin Hotel (文華)for many months/years.
@AnsonYMLeung5 жыл бұрын
Indeed he was not. That's why, as I wrote, he kept complaining. But I suppose I put his case here to argue that not all foreigners in Hong Kong are earning that much. Life could be a lot easier for the 'expatriates' in the original and thus true sense and your friend is definitely one of those.
@Woodland265 жыл бұрын
52k+25k housing+13k retirement = 90k HKD per month, plus bonus. Not everyone will get big bucks. I am working in a western society as professional. Earn more than most here in theory, but deduct tax then still true income 40% less. Actually your ex-boss total package is better than me.

Well, if you’re an expat - first you’ll be experienced ( because there’s no point in hiring an expat if the talent can be found locally) , second you won’t come to Hong Kong unless the package is great or at least better than what you’d make back home, so it’s logical for them to have higher salary and with rental subsidies and all kinds of benefits. By default, expats should have better packages, it’s the same all over the world. But yes, it’s almost ridiculous how much these people make, but I’m pretty sure they got to where they are for a reason, studied hard and good at what they do.

The incomes in central cannot represent the real level of Hong Kong, actually many people are just under 15k/m. The gap between the rich and the poor is very serious.
@DonLee19805 жыл бұрын
I once had a friend who studied american law, and was offered a job in HK for the same pay that she would get in the US, except that she'd get an additional $40,000 in housing salary per month. That was some 10 years ago and $40k could get you quite a decent flat.

Honfy Lam still wouldn’t suggest to work in Hong Kong in long run, but oversea working experience can definitely leverage her salary in US.

there is a survival bias in this experiment: those who thought they earn not much would rather make an excuse and leave, while those who were proud of their salary (high-paid guy!) would be more inclined to stop and write down (human nature), so the average number you can see here actually is skewed to higher end
@yuezhao74875 жыл бұрын
Like some comments down below most expats you asked are bankers. Obviously their salary is quite high. For comparison, a well-known footballer not even top range can earn 20 million euros a year (4 millions HKD a month) excluding bonus like winning certain titles. You may just think you are in the wrong business.
It not True from real HK central, a lot of people only 15k to 30k per month.

Whilst a good attempt at keeping things anonymous - might not be best in terms of fair comparison. A fresh grad level expat doesn't earn 200K regardless of whether they are local or expat. And someone with 10 years of working experience in the same industry will earn about the same regardless of where they are form tbh.
