Excellent samurai short film Toru. I absolutely enjoyed it very much it reminds me of classic samurai movies from critically acclaimed Japanese filmmakers like Akira Kurosawa Masaki Kobayashi, and Hideo Gosha. The direction was solid, the writing was great, the cinematography was spectacular, the acting was very good, and the sword choreography was fantastic. I hope you make more samurai short films in the not so distant future keep up the good work!

What a beautiful story and wonderfully shot film. Your character wished to help others, while your teacher forbade it. The battle then to me seemed like one final test to see if you were really ready or not. Cutting him down hurt the heart, but the teacher character couldn't be more proud. I really wish I could get into Japanese martial arts!

choreo that puts a lot of modern choreo to shame aswell as the camera work and i love the fact that this fight has rather long shots where we can see whats happening without a billion ammount of cuts i will watch your career with great interest

Thanks! I do like the modern sword fight style and dynamic camera work. However, for this project, we decided to challenge ourselves by aiming for a more realistic fight. Shooting wider to capture the entire choreography is tough since there's less room for faking, but the learning experience was invaluable!

We use two type of swords. One is “iaito”. It doesn’t have the edge but looks real and has the similar weight of a real sword. We use them for close ups. The other one is called Takemitsu. Back in the day they used to use bamboo for this but nowadays they mainly use oak wood. Takemitsu is really light and pretty durable. For this reason, it’s used in many samurai films in Japan. The only issue is that they are only available in Japan as far as I know. And those stores don’t ship internationally. You can find something similar in the US but it tends to break easy…. Hope this answers some of your questions🙏🏼

We both trained in Katori Shinto Ryu, and you'll notice some stances and moves inspired by the style in our choreography. However, I'd say the majority of the routine is geared towards a modern film-style approach.
