His performance blew me away, You can tell he really is a master! The creative sounds he employed were so beautiful I can't wait to discover more shakuhachi music.

This past summer, my partner and I saw John in Hangzhou, China. I immediately came home and purchased as many cds and lps of his as I could find. After all that, two things are very obvious. First, John is a genius improvisational player. Second, his real magic is in live performances. The recordings just couldn't touch his onstage playing. Why? It all comes down to the improvisational jazz / in the moment Zen mindset that he brings to his performances. If you've never seen John Neptune play live, you just don't know what you're missing out on. He will take you through a gamut of emotions and surprise you all along the way. You interviewed a true shakuhachi master, sat in the presence of someone we may never hear the likes of again.

That is so true. If he hadn’t discovered shakuhachi his life could have been completely different.

want to note that playing the flute in the wind is much more difficult. You are really lucky to have so good teacher for first sounds
I find the spiritual origins of this instrument fascinating, I'd also like to try making it but I need to source the specific kind of bamboo or something

YOu can buy just the Bamboo "stock" from a maker.

I want to say the piece he played at the end was a classical piece. I've heard it before. I just don't know the name.

@ToruUchikado Thank you so much. You had no way of knowing this but you just helped me unlock a powerful experience from my past. This melody was actually one of my earliest memories. My grandmother who raised me was Japanese. And I don't remember where or when it was, but when I was very young, I heard this playing and was transfixed. It was stuck in my head for so long and aside from it being a standalone experience, always made me think of my grandmother. She's long since passed but I've been experiencing a lot of things coming full circle recently, so this adds to that list of synchronicities.
