One of the things I took from this clip was where Torvill says the teacher took them to the ice rink off her own back. It must have seemed like such a little thing to that teacher at the time and yet small acts of kindness in providing opportunities to people can be so transformative. I do find it sad that such initiative these days would be frowned upon and it leaves you wondering if we have made a society where such exceptionalism is now beyond our children's reach.

Very sad this present society has chains around people for fear of moral police

Grow Insane ??? People help other people nowadays too. All the time. The "moral police issue" (which is annoying but has more to do with things you say in public than anything else) is completely separate from that. Old people always whine that people used to be kinder "back in the day" and that it was "safer back then" when by every objective measure that's demonstrably false. Aaaah dementia. One day you'll probably get me too.

@@maureenleigh4724 I was a school bus driver when one of my 9 yo fell over and cut her knee, I pulled over, got out my First Aid kit and cleaned and bandage the bloody wound, after tendering my assurances that you won't die from infection, we got on our way. I tell you, the bush telegraph is a lot damn quicker than email, by the time I got back to the depot, all hell broke loose. DID YOU TOUCH THE CHILD? Well, of course I did, her knee was bleeding all over the floor, she was upset and in pain, got out my Companies First Aid Kit, (you know, the kits you supplied two years ago, to administer to the kids) and bandage her up DID YOU TOUCH THE CHILD? Whatttt, are you deaf, I just told you what I did, YES, I TOUCHED THE CHILD, I put a damn band aid across her knee, what are the First Aid Kits for? Decoration? YOUR'RE NOT ALLOWED TO TOUCH THE CHILD, she was bleeding all over the floor and down her leg (should not have said that said that) DOWN HER LEG, DID YOU TOUCH HER LEG? Well, the cotton bandage wasn't going to do it, Cathy (the child) wasn't going to do it, so I did it, I wiped up the blood off her leg an knee and applied a band aid & Dettol antiseptic. Thus I was reported to the Dept. of Transport for touching a child, I was reprimanded, given a lecture on child endangerment, given another lecture of the things I can and can't do with a child, blah blah blah. As soon as I got back onto my bus, I tossed out the First Aid Kit, let the bastards bleed, I don't care anymore, actually I still do, but I won't be giving First Aid to anyone else from now on, up yours Wisely's, bloody WANKERS

Nanny state ... we're over-regulated to the point that there's very little room for inspiration to express itself

I was a teenager when I saw their Bolero on TV and it felt like a perfect day for me too. Recently I showed the video to my teenage daughter and I cried watching them dancing on ice again. Thank you Jane and Christopher for your art!

This is one of those rare moments in history that will shine externally. Of the countless times I've watched this routine (& the 1st was the original event), I was no more drawn in- almost enchantedly- as I was just now. Torvill & Dean were born to ice skate TOGETHER. They were phenomenal. Let's not forget that they were also blessed with outstanding choreographers & costume designers. An impeccable team.

All the positive sentiments here are echoed by me, but I think that added to all that - as a working-class person myself - we loved them because they were so down to earth, no airs and graces. Lovely, very special, people.
