There must have been a pact between the two parties not to campaign in their respective areas. There is also the possibly that the parties told their voters to vote for the other party. i.e. Labours voters told to vote LD in Tiverton and vice versa in Wakefield. This was a set up, and it surprises me that people can't see that.

@Somewhatskeptical It's not that he's relying on the far right, he *is* the far right. His government openly admits to be working on repealing human rights legislation and they also effectively took away our right to protest unless Pritti Patel decides it's okay (she can take any gathering she wants, say it's too annoying, and then proceed to arrest everyone that might be involved for up to 15 years which also takes away their voting rights). All this together means that Boris and his cabinet are functionally fascists. Or at least they've given themselves dictatorial power, they're just waiting on the right time to enforce it. They likely don't feel like they can get away with it this election, that's good news. They likely also need to overturn our human rights first and they won't get to that point this election (probably anyway). However despite the time we likely have until mass enforcement of their already enacted policies, we should be very worried and we shouldn't be afraid to call these policies what they are: fascist. This might seem over the top language, but what the hell else do you call abolishing our rights to protest? They're far right fascists. They're not "relying on the far right", they *are* the extremely far right.

Am I the only person that noticed that Labours vote in Tiverton dropped from 11000+ in the last general election to about 1100 in this by election. The LibDems vote also halved in Wakefield. There must have been a pact between the two parties not to campaign in their respective areas. There is also the possibility that the parties told their supporters to vote for the other party. i.e. Labour supporters told to vote LD in Tiverton and vice versa in Wakefield. This was a set up, and it surprises me that people can't see that.
@Megan-ii4gf2 жыл бұрын
This is what tactical voting is, this sort of thing can happen naturally if the voters decide that they only want to vote for the most electable party that is specifically *NOT* the conservatives. When that starts happening, you know the public is absolutely disgusted with you. EVERYONE I know across the entire UK hates the tories. And I don't just mean "hates", I mean HATES. They are reviled across the entire country, especially in poorer areas, among workers, among students, among previous tory voters. They are seen to have destroyed the country and nobody believes Johnson's lies anymore.

@matomatic45992 жыл бұрын
@@ChildOfTheLie96 Johnson is unusual by the fact that he 'governs' in way which contradicts his supposed "liberal" values - liberalism in the UK has emphasis on individual freedoms and the free market. 1) Johnson unlawfully prorogued back in September 2019 as ruled by the British Supreme court, on the grounds that he lied to the monarch on the purpose of proroguing with the unconventional (politically motivated) timing designed to prevent debate and possible back-bencher amendment to the Brexit bill he was trying to force through. Johnson also withdrew the whip from members of his own party who spoke out against him [Winston Churchill's grandson inc]. 2) Police and Crime bill introduced in April 2022 in response to extinction rebellion and insulate Britain protests. This bill allowed police to intervene against 1 person protests, permitted police to arrest people for ""public annoyance"" amongst other things. It largely flew under the radar particularly for those on the right wing. 3) British lockdown measures were fairly harsh compared to other Western countries. He, his civil servants and some of his cabinet broke the social distancing rules multiple times throughout 2020. You don't get much more authoritarian than having different rules for the rulers to the average citizen. There are other examples of this government's Authoritarian streak, but these are the ones which are irrefutable.

Despite being a conservative member, I won’t be particularly disappointed if we lose the next election. Clearly being in power for almost decade and a half isn’t going too well for us, and we need a while in opposition to truly get ourselves together, that and it’s not healthy for a democracy. While I do think Labour is incompetent, it’s not exactly their fault at this point seeing as they’ve been out of government for an generation

They want rid of him but there has yet to emerge someone they want to replace him. Plus with the challenging times ahead I'd let him continue for now and topple him later.
@samuelshaw31922 жыл бұрын
First reason is that you can't have a second no confidence vote under current conservative party rules until 6 months have passed. So Boris is pretty much safe from another challenge until the end of the year. The second reason would be there is still likely to be a lot of fall out from policies the conservatives are doing which, for a new leader it would be helpful to be able to lay at Boris' feet, for example, fuel prices, anything that happens regarding the NIP/GFA, Ukraine, inflation etc etc. I would also suspect that the reason Boris survived the no-confidence vote is that, while yes they want him to go, they don't want him to go 'yet' so everything can be blamed on him. One of the main reasons i suspect a lot of conservatives voted for Boris as PM in the first place was, in 2018/19 the world was a much different place, and there was little concern he would mess things up, and having him as leader NOW, would mean he wouldn't be able to be leader LATER. I very much doubt he would have been chosen if there had been foreknowledge of what was coming. Secondly, it is traditional for the Chancellor and the Home Secretary to be the front runners to be the next PM. Rishi has lost all credibility as chancellor given his insane budgets. Insane in that they are the exact opposite of what one would usually expect from Conservatives. And while Priti Patel is in a stronger position, it's not by much. Immigration is a very big issue with a lot of the Conservative voter base, and immigration is higher in 2021/22 onwards than it has ever been. If the Conservatives do a number of things to get this under control, like withdraw from the ECHR, the 1951 UN Asylum agreement, and pass new legislation for a UK bill of rights, then Priti would be able to deport illegal immigrants without any risk of court challenges by refugee advocates. At that point, Priti would likely be a front runner in any Leadership challenge, and if she won, would be able to clean the cabinet, blame boris, Rishi and anyone else for the mess, and then hopefully get on to changing course for the Conservatives. as to the last question, currently with a GE 2 years away, the MP's won't be too concerned. Its a good job that a lot of bad things have happened at the start of the term rather than at the end. with a lot of people having a generally short term memory when it comes to politics, if the last year before the GE is a good one, then Conservatives won't be too concerned. If things nosedive and get worse, then they will be concerned. Things like a bad bi-election result tend to bring the tories together. Once they win (or lose) the next election, then the knives will come out again.

On another subject of how bad " Global Tory Britain" is working out - I noticed that Ford's new electric car plant is being built in Valencia Spain - Ford totally ignored the UK because we aren't in Europe any more. The Spanish car industry has built more cars each year than Britain for many years now as successive British governments have failed to invest in car manufacturing. What with losing Honda in Swindon, we sure don't look very Global.. Another reason to never vote Conservative.
