Tosa's aren't given the respect they deserve. They are not a breed recognized by AKC here in the U.S. and its a shame. This breed is given a bad rep because of what they were originally bred for. Tosa's are put in the catagory of a fighting dog but what a lot of people don't understand is the fact that these dogs are gentle giants! If you look at the breeding of what created a Tosa you won't find a breed that is know as a fighting dog. These dogs are know as the sumo wrestlers of dogs. They are respected in Japan and are even given the same honor as a sumo wrestler. I own 2 beautiful Tosa's a male from Poland and a female from Romania. I have raised them with my 2 young children and they are wonderful with kids! Tosa's are extremely loyal to one family only. They will protect their family to the end. They have an eager to please manner and are extremely easy to train because of their eagerness to please. I look forward to one day seeing the breed recognized by AKC and taking first at Westminster Dog Show! Sincerely, Tosa lover, owner and enthusiast

Sumo wrestlers. Well said! Dog fightings in Kochi prefecture(aka Tosa)are legal and very strictly regulated to avoid killing of dogs. It's totally different from those underground dog fightings of US and UK.

I too had a Tosa and he was by far the best dog I've ever owned! They truly want to wrestle other big dogs... A friend of mine had a Pyrenees and they used to wrestle all the time... At first, my Tosa always dropped his dog, but as my Tosa's hips went, eventually he lost, but even after that he would still wrestle with him...

A really big dog, but it's well trained 😁 That's the deal with dogs. The level of training it needs depends on the breed. A dog like Tosa Inu needs alot of training as soon as it is taken from it's mother. They also need a firm hand. We have had two Rottweilers in my familly and they need a firm hand as well or they will run you over. Our first Rottie happened to be an alpha male, which made him a tricky one to convince that I was the one in charge, not him. But he was loyal, full of love and protecting.
