Let's talk about the VM Labs Nuon - specifically the Toshiba Nuon! This was a game console (technically? Maybe just a suped-up DVD player) that was designed by a lot of folks who worked on the Atari Jaguar and had a grand total of EIGHT games for it. So, today on Stuff We Play, let's look at this $10 Nuon system that was found at a thrift store and dive into the story of the Nuon itself!

2:11 I would never say Jeff Minter got his *start* on the Jaguar, he had a bunch of hit games on 8-bit home computers.

Start in relation to this story, which was poor wording on my part. But yeah, his work for British microcomputers absolutely was his true start

My understanding behind the non-Nuon-compatible Nuon-based DVD players is that the Nuon wasn't an extra chip that added gaming functionality, but that it was a fully-featured DVD player SOC with Nuon functionality built-in. Late in its sales cycle, VM Labs apparently slashed prices either in an effort to gain market share or just get rid of inventory. The wholesale price of the chips was so low that it was a good option just to use as a base for a regular DVD player, which is why some companies released Nuon-based players that can't play Nuon games. However, I've heard that some of these players can be converted, and that it's possible to attach controller ports to the PCB in order to restore the Nuon functionality.

I remember being really intrigued on the Nuon back when I heard about it, especially cause it was in a time in my life that I was really into collecting DVDs. But that’s so cool that you found one! If you get a copy of Tempest 3000 someday, I would love to play it with you!

While watching this video I was reminded of being a kid getting dragged into CES trade shows with my father and would come across the VM Labs booth for Tempest 3000, and that kart racing game. I remember they wouldn't allow me, a 15 year old to play the games and I was very offended. Creative Labs 3d0 blaster booths at least allowed you to try the damn things. I remember that.

That's so odd of them! Like, I know it's a trade show and those are supposedly semi-formal affairs, but you'd think they'd let people play the damn games if they were trying to actually sell folks on them haha!

The only reason I bought the first generation PS2 was because of its ability to play dvds 📀, the ps2 was way cheaper than dedicated dvd 📀 players, no brainier or what.

Had one of these for the kids, regret getting rid of it! We played Merlin Racing and Balistic a lot, there was also a glitchy Mecha game - Iron Soldier? that was pretty fun when it worked. I think we had a Samsung but I don't remember the console or the controllers looking like what you showed here. Anyway, thanks for the video and trip back through time!

That was no doubt the fault of those particular games (& their developers), but the system itself was designed to be able to be programmed to emulate ANY kind of graphics engine (example = ray tracing), & VM labs made software developer kits available too.
