Let me tell you one of my greatest regrets in life. I had given my entire Sega Saturn, 3 controller (1 3D), 21 disc collection in trade-in. Yes, it makes me ill just writing this. Recently, I have gotten into emulation and recovered most of my collection back, and more. They even load with the crisp Saturn console intro I missed. And when I hear that Daytona music, every memory showers over me like a nostalgic river.

I was a ps1 owner in 1996, then went back and picked up a saturn in 1999 around the same time i picked up a dreamcast. I had nights, saturn bomberman, bug! And a few other games i dont quite remember. I loved my saturn but sadly due to being pulled off shells, the second hand market was my only way to get games for it. It was heartbreaking. Eventually i put my saturn away, and went full speed ahead with my dreamcast obsession. The saturn deserved better.

If it ever comes out, I'm getting one. I totally agree with how they botched the playstation one. Didn't even come with dualshocks!
@inceptionalАй бұрын
@@polygonlegends Yeah, I never had an issue with the PlayStation Mini not having the duel shocks, as I liked how hardware wise it was just like the original PlayStation and fully captured that nostalgia for me exactly as I remember it, but I really wish the selection of games and quality of the emulation had just been better. Similarly, I'd actually want the original Saturn controller as default with such a Saturn Mini too, and just for the games to be done basically perfectly. They could sell the analogue controllers as optional extras for those who want that imo. This way it's properly authentic to the original experience, which I think is actually a hugely important point of these Mini systems, or at least should be imo.
@aaronking9332Ай бұрын
@@inceptionalat least it was one of the easier minis to hack and since it had a better chip than any other mini it can do some games that other minis struggle with.

I would probably temper the assertion that modern displays add anything to the Saturn experience ..once you go past svideo the mesh transparencies can get extra ugly. A really good crt looks good even with component input. I know that's probably contentious but if I'm using a modern display I emulate with something like yaba sanshiro so I can boost the resolution output, and with some emulators you can even make the mesh transparencies look nicer as well

Still I prefer original hardware because Saturn controls are soooo good; especially for 6 button fighting games and special controls like the virtual on twinstick

Great video. I remember being a huge SEGA fan when I was a kid. But I was a poor kid, and in my country, the SEGA Saturn wasn’t just super expensive, but also rare to find in stores. I lived in a small town and only read about it in magazines or saw commercials on TV for this next-gen SEGA console. I never had the opportunity to even see it in person. So, my main gaming machine at that time was the SEGA Mega Drive 2. I have so many amazing memories with that console... I can only imagine what it would have been like if I had owned a Saturn. :] Now, as an adult, I play the Saturn, but unfortunately only via emulation on my gaming PC and laptop. The strange thing is that I’m playing current-gen games, especially AAA titles, less and less. I find myself going back to the SEGA Mega Drive, SEGA Saturn, and Sony PlayStation via emulation more and more.

Purchased a Sega Saturn a little over a year it had been released. Paid $100 at my local Toys R Us. Never got a chance to play the standout titles as I was also in college then and any time I set aside for gaming was mostly dedicated to Mario and Zelda 64. Now, I did happen to come across this little gem called, *correction* Xmen vs SF. It was the Japanese release bundled with a 4 meg RAM cart. I had to buy a separate converter as well and the entire set up was pretty epic. I had to get the timing just right for the Saturn to recognize the 4 meg cart after boot up. The game ran superbly and my friends and I were always impressed by what was happening on screen. I picked the game and converter up at my local Babages. I believe I paid just north of $130 for the bundle. That was a lot of clams for me back then. Good times. I wish I had kept my Saturn, I actually sold it to another college kid for $40. System, two controllers and MK trilogy. Wish I kept it for the SNK titles that took advantage of the 4 meg cart. Great times though.

Sega Saturn works great in widescreen 16/9. Winter Heat, Last Bronx, Manx TT, Virtua Cop 2, Daytona USA CCE and Virtua Fighter 2 all from the Sega Model 2 arcade board (hence the widescreen) aged very well. I highly recommend these. They look great and play great. Die Hard Arcade, not so much though. Also grab a copy of Outrun : that's the finest version you can get. Magic Knight Rayearth is an outstanding action RPG, with vivid characters, great animé cutscenes. If you loved Lunar Eternal Blue on the Mega-CD, Magic Knight Rayearth will blow your mind I promiss. Rayman, in my opinion, belongs to the Saturn. The 2D jewell really shines on this particular platform. You'd be a fool to miss on all the Neo-Geo games, Twinkle Star Sprite, Bust-A-Move 3, Metal Slug and Real Bout Fatal Fury. Likewise, Puyo Puyo Sun is at home on the Saturn, as well as Saturn Bomberman. If you love your shmups, the Sega Saturn is the console you need: Darius Gaiden by Taito, Cotton 2, Batsugun by Toaplan, Radiant Silvergun by Treasure and so many more grace the console. RPG lovers, you've got Albert Odyssey, very good. Grandia has been translated and it's as fantastic as the 2nd one on Dreamcast. Resident Evil is here as well. Panzer Dragoon Saga of course. You can skip the original Panzer Dragoon and go straight to Zwei and Saga. Clockwork Knight episode 1 and 2 is the fun clever platform game you didn't know you needed. Play it and thank me later. If you believe the sports department is lacking, Sega Worldwide Soccer 97 will prove you wrong: it's everything you expect from a 3D soccer game and it's the best in the series. There's also a very satisfying full version of the cult classic management game Theme Park by Peter Molyneux, fun, fast and furious in 32 bits. Did you know Snatcher had a sequel? It does. It's called Policenauts and it runs like a charm on the Sega Saturn. That's it for my Sega Saturn recommendations. Oh, no. Capcom's X-Men vs Street Fighter. Get that one too. There are lots of fun to have on the Saturn. It's terrific for arcade, 2D and 3D. Don't let Nights Into Dreams and Sonic R (R for Rubbsh) deter you from experiencing the Saturn. This hidden gem of a video game console will surprise you, I swear.

Just a tip, but the Saturn discs are trivial to dump yourself. RetroArch has a function that does it for you. I just wish it would allow me to give the games a proper name.

I have a few, usually playing on the V-Saturn... My high school game room in the US had one and I never liked it as the controller felt awful (especially the shoulder buttons) and the composite video felt off to me. Now in Japan with native S-Video and the better controllers I appreciate it a lot more. Having a few hundred games I have learned most are junk but there are a good number of great ones to keep the system as the typical S-Video connection residing in the monitor!

I agree with you, the Japanese Saturn control is the better control for sure! The Japanese game market has so many great games as well. There's an Initial D racing game that I wish was released here in the US.

You have the Genesis 6-Pak labeled as 24 MB, which immediately made me skeptical as I don't remember any Genesis cartridges being anywhere near that large. Oh... wait I figured it out. The ROM is 3 MB. Games back then, especially Genesis games which made a big deal about the cart size, were quoted in megabits (Mb). 3 MB times 8 equals 24 Mb. For reference, Super Mario 64 was an 8 MB cartridge, as were many early N64 games. The only system that could have possibly had 24 MB games back then was the Neo Geo.
@polygonlegendsАй бұрын
You are correct! Good eye! The youtube editor does not allow me to update the graphics on that part unfortunately or replace that section with an updated one. I should have written 24 Mb because that stands for megabits because the way i have it listed (24 MB) is for megabytes. I could have put 3 MB to avoid any confusion. I wish I could fix it. It's a lesson learned for me. Thank You!

Model 1 Saturns are the best. $69.99 is a steal for a Saturn! Even in 1996! Edit: Holy crap, and you got the triple game bundle for that price as well??? DAMN!

Yeah! These are pre-ebay days! Do you remember K-Mart? They had a bargain bin full of 32x where I lived, $20 each!! They could not get rid of them! I hate myself for not thinking about the future and buying a handful of them.

The Saturn and Turbografx are the most expensive retro systems out there. As far as games there are reproduction copies out there that are cheaper.

I never had a Sega Saturn because my family was never well to do when I was a kid. My friend however in elementary owned a Saturn. I only got to play the console once in my life and the game my friend had was titled 'Yakyuu Ken Special: Konya wa 12-kai Ikusa.' It's basically rock-paper-scissors with a girl and would strip an article of her clothing each time she loses.

You and me are the same in that respect. The game you played though sound typical 90's Japanese!

Got a Saturn for christmas 96 after being allowed to pick between it and the PS1. My dad gave me crap forever; "should've picked the PS1" this, "you can't borrow games from friends" that. Now with multiple consoles, a complete PAL-collection and a sizable JPN one... Yeah I never regretted that choice for a second. Current day emulation STILL being where it is even less so. My original Saturn is hooked up to my TV NOW. I doubt many people have their original PS1 hooked up when it's so easy to emulate with good results... My favorite single player most likely Nights; Rayman was cool but TOO evil for a small child whose Saturn's battery memory crapped out. Too many single player games to list though... Multiplayer probably Death Tank Zwei (though Bomberman is cool but NEED at least 6 people). Had duels with my dad in that game basically every weekend throughout our version of high school.
@polygonlegendsАй бұрын
Sounds like you have a great collection! You are so right! My PS1 is not hooked up, I usually play my PS1 games on my PS3. I haven't had any issues with it. Bomberman! Yes! I never had the opportunity to play with 6 but my cousins and I would play 2 player and we loved it! That's awesome that you played with your Dad. That's a great memory. Thanks for sharing!
@SicketMogАй бұрын
@@polygonlegends 6-8 player teams of 2 in Bomberman with the right people is, imho, peak party multiplayer. Recommended if you get the chance for sure. Right often forget that it can do that; was a massive shame that the PS2 capabilities were removed for the later models (forget why). Use a modded PS2 for this reason; don't touch PS3 much anyway. "With the right setup these games can look crisp on your modern TV" Going to expose myself as a crazy perhaps but... I have couple of CRTs (and like 5 more in storage knowing they'd get more difficult to come by). Don't touch a modern TV. What setup would you recommend for playing Saturn on them?
