Dear Ellen, don,'t explain, don't apologise. You are you and that is fine. Do not become cramped trying to do Dutch, because that realy is fake. We Dutch have this annoying habit to wish to tell everyone around what they do wrong, because we are so direct. Well, there is a lot that we could do better ourselves, including to accept that other people may have other customs. Call it opinionated. And now see how many dutch people will jump down my throat for this.🤣🤣🤣

The sentence "I'm his wife" made me smile. Dutch women have in general a more "I am me" mentality, that is one of the reasons weddings are less common, an other reason is more that half the country isn't religious anymore.

As to the 'fake' thing, I reckon it has little to do with you acting spontaneous when you see a friend. It's more like the stereotypical scene: American asks "how are you doing?", which is translated by a Dutchie into "hoe gaat het met je?". A Dutch person will then assume that you're genuinely interested to hear abt his/her feelings, troubles, hopes etc. while an American is just being polite with no intention to hear all abt that. So a Dutchie will then conclude: phoney interest. It's somewhat of a cultural misunderstanding. What is also deemed fake abt Americans is the fact that many of them seem obsessed with not being "offensive" to anyone. Dutchies will find that bordering on being insincere, since they're more direct and used to speaking their minds. Again, an American might think himself to be polite, while a Dutch person concludes: this must be phoney, insincere just say what you really think instead of sugarcoating things. Americans otoh, will find Dutch people to be rather direct, bordering on being blunt.

It's so nice to hear you speak about Dutch people and Dutch culture. I saw a bunch of vids of the stereotype guy you are using in your vid; he's nice. This society is much more friendly than the American society but, we live with 17 million people on a stamp! That's why people can be direct. There has to be some politeness among eachother to feel respected and all.

My hack is to put the tosti for 30 seconds in the microwave first, it will melt the cheese really good. On this way I can make much faster tosties because what is left is just making a crispy outside so I can turn the heat higher to get the tosti faster ready.

I usually never apply on videos, but I just wanted to say I think its very cool you really try to understand the dutch culture. When it comes to mom friends I just want to ensure you that its not necessarily because of your age or because your a expat. In my experience dutch tend to be on themselves a lot. I don't know if you live in a smaller town, but I do and what I see is people know each other from preschool. So as a outsider its hard to get into that. I experience that to atleast and I'm dutch haha. Love the videos and I would totally be your friend😉

@JerrySpark 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Brendon described it quite well As I sidenote, I have the impression that you are genuine, so that does not apply to you personally in my opinion. Strangely enough about the bluntness, when I returned to The Netherlands after my expat period in the States, the feedback I got back from my colleagues was actually quite surprising .. Although it took some time for them to get used to the directness, multiple people told me they really appreciated the WYSIWYG mentality. I was often very direct, but it was thereby also very clear, and they appreciated this more than I expected. Regarding the "How are you" subject I would imagine, this is difficult to grasp. If I would meet someone for the the first time, I would never ask how they are, I do not know him, and could be a complete 'you know what'. If a native Dutch asks you how you are doing, you better have a good answer, because he/she really wants to know. We Dutch I guess see it a bit as inflation when certain style of communication is used, and choose our words carefully. Also, maybe you can confirm or deny, that from early age children in the US are learned to stand out from the crowd, to get noticed. In The Netherlands this is "frowned upon", we tend to wonder what makes this person so special compared with others to behave this way. Loved your video

I always spread some butter on the outside of the sandwich itself, we call this a pan tosti btw. I suggest to get a multigrill tho, it's great for tosti's or waffles, but you can also use it to grill hamburgers or any other meat you would normally put on a grill/bbq. And get well soon! Unfortunately the flu season came early this year, normally its more around fall/winter times.

Only recently (I’m 69…) I was converted to the (slow cooking) pan-pizza, and learned (better late than never) to apply not only butter but also some mayo on the bread. And to make a combination of (preferably grated) cheeses, one that melts easily, and another that has a stronger flavor. PS be yourself!

As for Dutch thinking Armericans are fake: we tend to see a lot of forced smiles and over kindness... so that rings all the alarms to a Dutchie. As for religious: You can not even state in some states that you are atheist or you won't be able to perform certain jobs. Also, if you want to have a political career: do not be an atheist or at least appear to be religious ( like Donald Trump did... talk about fake )

Finally someone who explains that Americans / American women are obsessed by weddings, marriage. I have been baffled by KZbin or reddit posts I've come across: bridezillas, Mother-in-law problems, wedding upsets etc. In my mixed Dutch - British family most of those who are in a long-term relationship are not legally married, but totally committed. Many of them have kids.

When we think of fake Americans I don't think it's the way they greet each other, that's covered by loud lol. It's probably the beating around the bush in too many situations, it contrasts with our directness to a point where it feels fake to us. The religiosity comment is probably pointing towards evangelicals and the power they have.

A broodtrommel is better than just leaving the bread out, but we keep our bread in its packet in the fridge where it lasts twice as long as elsewhere. Furthermore we keep spare loaves in the freezer and take them out, half a loaf at a time and let them thaw for a short while before going into the fridge. Perhaps this works better for us because we only eat brown wholemeal.

"That's just great! It's super! You are so special, girl! Just amazing!" The fake part is (partially) because there is no nuance in the higher register. Which is pretty frequently the only register people hear in public. Plus: one of the first things Dutch people in their earliest experience with Americans will run into, is that the question "How are you?" is not supposed to be answered. For Dutch people that translates as: "Why are you asking me a question you don't want an answer to? Why are you pretending to be interested in me, whereas you clearly aren't?".

In the Netherlands the majority of people identify as Atheist, in the US it's a tiny amount of people. Every day American school children worship their country and the Christian god by saying the pledge of allegiance, while here most Christian schools don't even have prayer. California is probably the least religious State in the US, but there are very large parts where everyone is Christian.

yeah I still don't get why "how are you?" comes off fake? I feel like sometimes its kind of like a filler to roll the convo forward into a meaningful connection (layers and layers). I'm not sure ...maybe sometimes it could be small talk at first for some people but, then a lot of the time being American, it just feels like we're extremely social with everyone. I can see why it can be perceived as shallow. I respect the reserved part too though, sometimes its more awkward and I'm at a loss with how to approach someone here without coming off too forward..."american" "loud". I love that you mention this, its something I've been overthinking myself!! I've been in some awkward situations in which I'm always worried about appearing "fake" but I genuinely feel like you, we just love being friendly and open.

Lol, don't be disturbed by the 'fake' comment. I think it has more to do with the 'customer is King' culture in the US than anything else. When customer service is so much driven by the tips one receives, or by the complaints one gets when something is not up to par, then to the Dutch, that level of service is perceived as fake (that can't be real... no person is that nice... or that smile must be fake, no sane person smiles that much!). Also, when Americans compliment something or someone they tend to overdo it a bit in the eyes of the Dutch. ie. after a good meal Americans tend to say 'this is the BEST meal I ever had!', 'or this is the BEST vacation ever!'. Which to the Dutch may sound like 'Wow, really? The best (whatever)? That must be fake... Also, the plastic surgery culture in the US adds to the stereotype of the country and the people being fake. We, the Dutch, are just a bit more reserved than Americans are, not as much as the Brits though! But pretty reserved still. Just act 'normal', that is crazy enough to most Dutch... But you will also find that when a Dutch person says something, it usually is truthful. So, fe. when a Dutch person asks you: How are you? They then genuinely ask you how you are and expect or are open to a real answer. They genuinely want to know about what's going on in your life. The Dutch often perceive many American relationships as fake. fe. because of the young age that Americans tend to get married. Around age 20 is pretty standard for some parts of the US. To the Dutch that is strange as the human brain, thus one's personality, is only fully developed at around age 25. How can that marriage ever stand or be real? Same as with the golddigger culture in some areas in the US. And lastly, many things in the US landscape and architecture are cultured. Man-made. Like parks, or buildings that are so big they become unnatural - out of this world, so to speak. Surrounded by fake grass and fake trees. BTW, the IND is swamped with Ukranian and Russian immigration at the moment, on top of the regular immigration requests, so they are a bit stretched at the moment... Greetz from Amsterdam xxx

US small talk with all its hidden pitfalls feels like natural to Americans, but feels stilted, forced and artificial to Dutch. The same with all other social niceties, those simply don't travel cross-culture very well. Probably in both directions, it is simply an impedance difference. Strangely enough, somehow it is easier with other Europeans (I'm thinking of Spanish, Italians, Polish), even if the language barrier is higher than with Americans.

In my experience spending a vacation in NY and touring the west coast the idea of fake starts when entering a store in LA or SF and being overwelmed with friendlyness just to sell something. When there is nothing to sell I didn't experienced any fake greetings and kindness. Shopping in NY to me was a nicer experience because it was a little less of a show but still more friendly than Europe. In general I find Americans friendly and more open. Although being invited for a coffee at someones home but never receiving their adress was also a little strange.

Compared to the Dutch the Americans are very religious. Now that doesn't mean other countries don't rival or surpass the US. Even within Christianity I'd argue that Romania, Italy or Paraguay are more religious but from a Dutch perspective Americans are extremely religious. This is mostly down to how public expressions of faith are. I might miss someone obscure but I don't thing the US has ever elected a non-Christian as president. There have been several non-religious Dutch prime ministers. That to us reads as religious. That image is then reinforced with things like heartbeat bills, the ten commandments displayed in secular institutions like court houses and the dominance of mormons among government agencies. That doesn't mean the US is a Christian country founded on Christianity or that every American must be Christian. But it does mean it's an inescapable part of public daily life. And that to use is very religious. As for the tosti, grating the cheese and mixing in a soft cheese creates a superior melt. Also buttering the bread, even a little bit creates a far better crust!

I agree, there are many more public displays of religious faith in the US than in the Netherlands, and the evangelical right has a total stranglehold over the political system. On Koningsdag, there was an LGBTQ party hosted by the Homo Monument in front of the Westerkirk, which in the US would have been seen as sacrilegious and an act of defiance/aggression against the Christian church.

I think most has been discussed below. On the part of the kids gym and general interaction. Just try it! Most of the times its just the upfront but when you start a conversation you'll get a curious responce as most people would like to know why you're in Holland. Even more at the kids gym, its the experience that bonds people not age! And in general compair the Dutch to Belgium or Vlamish then we (the Dutch) are loud and direct. Second like you choose to put the 'are Americans fake' in your title but is the video about it? You can also think the video you derive the info from is that the general opinion or the opinions to get the most viewers? Good luck with the Dutch lessons! As a fair part of the jung Dutch will see you as an "English language try out" if they only think your not Dutch ;)

Hey Ellen, Most things you said are covered by others but I do want to get back on your opinion US-citizens are not that religious: I think a very high number are! I have travelled many times to the USA and there are soooooo many churches even in the smallest of communities! (OK The Netherlands also has many churches but there are a smaller number of active believers - but those that are are usually real hardcore christians ;-) ) Just the fact that in the last days the US high court leaked that they are considering to ban the federal right for women to have an abortion.. And I have noticed many young Americans get married to be allowed to have sex... That type of thinking is (luckily) getting fast extinct in the Netherlands! The whole dating to get a ring is an obsession! The Dutchies like to shop around and try to explore what kind of person would fit them best to go into a long term relationship. And exploring your sexual life before marriage is not a bad thing imho.

for Dutch and most Europeans ''how are you doing'' very strange even rude to ask unless your are really aquinted. Dutch will usally say the truth like '' meh not very good'' ect. So the best tip for visiting us citizens ^^ . btw firts over the post is really strange to us too. we have like 23 parties in parlament, even one especially for animal wellfare . Two political parties is very close to one party rule don't you think people ? But get better , nasty cough you have there .

It is not toasty, but tostie in Dutch. The "o" being the same as in "vlog" and "ie" is like "y" in English. As for the fake part, it is considered fake questioning if you ask "how are you"? And not expect an honest answer. Furthermore if Americans want to say something that could be perceived as sensitive, or negative, they circumvent the topic often. A Dutchie would say straight, hey, you are getting fat, should you eat less? No harm done, just be clear in a few words. That indirectness of Americans, "are you feeling allright in your body? Do you need new clothes often? Is Fake in dutch eyes.

I think this man said 'religious' because every American politician (mind you: not a priest, but a politician) always does something the Dutch find very weird. They always end with something that would be impossible here: saying "God bless America." We have a separation of church and state, so even politicians of a Christian party would never say 'God bless the Netherlands'. I think this is one reason why the Dutch would think of Americans as religious. The other thing is the Puritan way of dealing with sex and other normal things of life in public. Hell breaks lose if a nipple is shown in a movie. Why? It's just a nipple, nothing more, nothing less. And there are more examples like these. And you'd say: but the majority of the Americans isn't religious anymore. For the Dutch this makes us wonder why the American society is still living up to these Christian prohibitions.

We're not reserved because we are distant. We are reserved because we are used to being very close. Just 100 years ago sleeping in a 'bedstee' wasn't unusual. Our culture reflects this. It's closer, not more distant. 'Gezellig' And because of this our social signals are toned down. The 3 kisses is a pretty clear example of this. Way too intimate for most cultures. Wide plains Yanks greeting each other 5 miles away from the top of their lungs... But who cares?

About the fairness; my impression is Americans constantly do superficial small talk, asking ‘how are you!’ A lot but not actually wanting answer. If I would respond with “horrible, total sucky day…” that is unexpected and not actually the intend. More examples like this are easy to give, but all the same point. Thenwords don’t meantime literal thing, it’s meant superficial and Dutch really don’t like that :)

Just buy a tosti ijzer at blokker for 20 euro.. lol Just 1 little example of why we think most Americans are fake.. It begins with the phrase: Hello, nice to meet you how do you do? In The US they don't give a damn what the answer is.. So it's not a genuine question.. If you ask an average Dutch person the same.. He or she would think you're REALLY interested and he or she will say for example .. I'm fine but i have a horrible stomach pain and tells the whole story 😀

And the sales channels they have: "hey Mike! Have you seen this amazing, wonderful, one of a kind toaster?! You have to buy one now, because..."etc. etc. It's the behavior we often see on TV that enhances the 'fakeness' I think. The 'money before everything' attitude (100% capitalism) might also have to do with it.

The fake part is partly due to all the American TV shows we get presented with this overly use of OMG and all the plastic enhanced faces. This might give some false idea of what America is like.

Use belegen kaas not jonge kaas. And don't use white bread it's garbage and dry a.f. personally I prefer the maisbrood(kornbread). Cheese, ham and another layer of cheese. Heat up your koekenpan and set it at 4. Little bit butter at both sides and your tosti wil be perfect (eat it with hela curry😍?.

Try not buttering the pan but just spread butter on the outside of the bread. It will be crunchy and delicious. Why don't you agree on Americans being overly religious. I really noticed it when I was over there how much religion there is and how hard it is to tell someone you don't believe in a God.

Do not understand why you are using cheese from the supermarket, apart from the salt it is rather tasteless. Just go to a real cheese shop (kaaswinkel), better quality cheese and often cheaper than the cheese from the supermarket.
