I did the 'black water leaf litter' approach for my shrimp tank and I love it and so do the shrimp, nerite snails and the java moss. Your tetra black water leaf litter tanks look fantastic and so healthy. I wish more people used this approach.

I have used oak leaves for over 30yr in my systems, I have found that they have many benefits for my fish, shrimp and snails especially the microorganisms they help create for fry food. I even use the oak leaf tannins in my special mix for natural fish treatments since the tannins have shown to help frail finage IME. Love your videos

I collect and use naturally dried and fallen from my tree Oak leaves and as long as you don't worry about any type of contamination on the leaves like bugs sprays etc....I use mine as is-I don't rinse or anything since I keep the dirt based aquariums, any dirt on the leaves don't matter to me, but if you do or they are really dirty you might want to give them a quick rinse

I have a few boiled oak leaves in each of my 50 gallon breeder tanks. The snails love them. However after reading up more on this subject... I'm thinking I need not to boil them so much. I'm thinking that next time I'm only going to deep them in hot water to sterilize them. :)

I love the tannins. I have red eyed tetras in a 55 with Severums and Geophagus. I also have a leaf litter 40 with Severums, Filamentous Barbs, and a Hoplo Cat. Great video, the choice of music really added to the blackwater effect. Thanks!

Hi Lucas, I enjoyed your video. Love how you keep so curious and start new projects all the time; I'm the same. I also use Indian Almond Leaves (IALs) for my Clown Killifish (Rocket Killies). Some people don't like using IALs in their tanks because the tannins do stain the water, which reduces visibility and might even affect the growth of plants, especially those with high light requirements. However, to me, the benefits of using IALs far outweigh these downsides, and the fish are happy! And happy fish makes the colors really pop! Yes, the tea colored water might slow plant growth, but anyone who's seen a school of cardinal tetras in such water knows what I'm talking about when I say that this downside is outweighed by the benefits! The IALs not only lower the PH, especially in low TDS water; they also release flavonids, humic acids and other substances that are very beneficial to aquatic life that in nature lives in a soft water / black water environment. Such as angelfish, discus, most tetras and killifish. When I started in the hobby some 45 years ago, Tetra sold a product called Black Water Extract, made from peat, I think. That product is still around, although I think it's great that aquarium hobbyist always look for new "hacks." I belong to the San Francisco Bay Area Killifish association, and one of our members even experimented with using Rooibos (South African Bush Tea, aka "Mormon Tea"). The Mormons used to prefer this kind of tea because it doesn't contain caffeine. This member had to put up with my joke asking him why he just didn't use Lipton Instant Ice Tea powder instead, but he said that the Rooibos has antibacterial properties, and that his killifish were triving in it. One last thing, another benefit of the IAFs is that as they break down, they provide biofilm and infusoria that our fish fry and little shrimpies can snack on. So lots of benefits there. Thanks again for a great video, and keep'em coming! I look forward to an update on your tetra breeding project.

Those worms, will they kill off root feeding plants?? Seen as tho they’re eating the matter underneath the substrate?

No they wont kill healthy roots but will eat away the bad ones which benefits the plants and so does their waste.

Just wondering: ...How many leaves per gallon and how long to sterilize your leaves before adding them to your fish-tanks?
@LRBaquatics
@LRBaquatics 6 жыл бұрын
I just threw them in. If I know the fish or shrimp like acidic black water you dont have to worry so much on how many leaves. Just make sure you are getting leaves from somewhere chemicals arent sprayed on the or in the area around them.
