Tony, as you spew more negative news about China, their EV cars are sailing across oceans to capture more market share. Their battery manufacturers CATL & BYD are overwhelming the market, China is rolling more high speed rails to cities further and further away. Their solar manufacturers are obliterating competitors with super cheap but high quality products. Their telecommunication giant Huawei just announced annual revenue of USD118 billion dollars their second best in history, despite all the sanctions imposed on them. Their drone manufacturer DJI sells 70% of the world drones. Last year China trade surplus was closed to USD$1 trillion dollars, their highest on record and this despite all the sanctions imposed on them. Deepseek AI, China's version of ChatGPT released just recently took the world market by storm, due to its performance and costs. Sorry Tony, try harder to find dirt and spread misinformation on China.

While there was some short-lived hype in the IT space about the Chinese AI, it died once it became clear China had bult their system atop others' work. Unfortunately, China is getting a reputation in some tech sectors for over-promising and under-delivering. The perfect example is the third carrier with its electromagnetic catapults... which still do not work after several years. There are strong suggestions that the carrier will never enter service, As for their fourth carrier, which was supposed to have nuclear production, it hasn't yet left the drawing board.

@@skydragon23101979, he's not wrong about the catapults, though. In fairness to Chinese carrier sailors, sustaining one entire 24-hour cycle of safe operation is incredibly difficult for even experienced sailors. Learning the ways to best man & sustain carrier operations took the US Navy about four Decades, from the commissioning of the Langley to the commissioning of the Kitty Hawk. China can copy a design or two. In learning the craft of sailing, however, there are zero shortcuts to recognizing & training to meet the best standards & practices in naval operations. I remember about 15 Years ago the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group held a celebration to commemorate the strike group's very first 6-Month tour without a single fatality or serious injury. At that point in her career the Big Abe had been sailing for about 30 Years. Think about that. Sailing is a demanding set of tasks even when you're not at war. Zero shortcuts.

The BYD labor practices in Brasil remind me of Cuba's control of doctors sent 'on medical assignments' throughout Latin America. They are essentially slaves of the Castro regime forced to work but not receiving legitimate wages for their expertise and service. This strategy is like having overseas Gulags serving the homeland warlord.
@colonel__klink7548

I don't wanna give Cuba a W but... accusing them of enslaving doctors whom could easily run away and seek protection from the host countries (that are so desperate for doctors they'd gladly take them in and defend them from the Castros) seems like a bit of a stretch. What this is likely is some propagandist is out there saying these doctors are slaves because they aren't paid $200,000 a year to do things like simple 15 minute medical examinations that are so expensive that only the upper classes are able to have them done. Basically "if it's not the US system that is too expensive for anyone but the top 10% to use then it's slavery."

If the Chinese can really do wonderful things in AI without US chips, why are they aggressively lobbying to have restrictions lifted? You would think they would take the opportunity to work hard on their own chips and steal market share from the current producers. I am still waiting for the other shoe to drop on DeepSeek regarding how much of what they did was pirated from existing AI platforms.
@tonysu8860

After listening to all that has been said about Deepsedk for the past 3 weeks, I can say with fairly high confidence that China likely built Deepsedk without using any banned hardware and didn't steal any American technology. This small group simply made goid use of what is available publicly and successfully adapted concepts and practices publicly described over 7 years ago by Deepmind to building an AGI model. Although the original ideas are American, there is some innovation involved to make Deepmind machine learning work for AGI.

"oh noes! The Chinese plagiarism machine plagiarized the American plagiarism machine!" I hate to say it but the reason why OpenAI is upset that Deepseek might have stolen their training data set is that OpenAI being the first mover was essentially able to steal the entire internet for their training use free and clear. Now you have to pay Twitter and Reddit outrageous fees to train on them. Image databases are totally corrupted with AI generated vomit so it doesn't even matter if you can afford DeviantArt's price to train, the data is now just 80% AI junk. Basically the accusations of theft are the first thief trying to pull the ladder up behind them.

Time will tell if Toyota was right or not. But due to Toyota's other plants in China, there will be no lack of individuals wanting to work there.

Tesla looks like great value in China. However, all these cars look the same to me on the road and they all offer an excellent ride.

Earlier this week, I attended a US-PRC-centric event, and the scuttlebutt there (not that I necessarily agree with it) was that the current administration is laser-focused on immigration, border security, and government efficiency-so much so that foreign affairs are taking a back seat to domestic politics. I’m sure the PRC isn’t especially happy about potential tariffs, but I imagine the Party finds some comfort in knowing that the current administration seems to view U.S. civil servants as a greater threat to national security than China or Russia. Given that, I wonder whether we’ll see any flexing from U.S. adversaries in the near future. And no, Denmark doesn’t count. 😏

The problems with the bans and tariffs is not the strategic intent, but the failure in the execution of such barriers. The Biden administration broadcast their intent to ban chips, etc. months (years?) before they implemented the policies. China had plenty of time to stock up on chips, ASML EUV machines and parts. IMO, the Biden Administration was still a proponent of the China Engagement Model and widely announced barriers were simply political theater. They even facilitated China's decrease in direct exports to the US by using Mexico as the backdoor for Chinese exports (eventually arriving in the US). To be frank, the genie was out of the bottle when we educated hundreds of thousands of Chinese students in the West's universities.

Not in its censorship. Maybe they changed it but ask Deepseek what Tianamen Square history is.

@victorb5 maybe ask it anything else. Do not ask your electrician to do your plumbing. 😒 And you also got access to running Deepseek locally on your own computer. Now I do suspect that your pc is unable to handle higher levels of knowledge for the AI. Because it requires a lot of storage and computer power. And when I say a lot of power, I mean A LOT of power. But it is eco friendly, faster in its calculations and "smarter" due to having higher amounts of parameters it can go through. The currently biggest model goes through some 671 billion parameters. Parameters are its knowledge base. :-) Anyway. I did manage to get around the censorship by simply formatting my questions in a way that makes the censorship "non-logical". This is only available on local versions since the online version is running another level of censorship. :-) It is really easy. Ask it something else.
