Wow! You did a fabulous job! With you, if you can hire her out the drywall energy, definitely do it. I had to do a lot of drywall after hurricane Sandy. There was nobody around to hire because their houses got damaged also. Wound up coming out great but it was a horrible job. Lol good luck to you!

For 80K, I would be *extremely* thankful to just have a home and not have a ton of mortgage debt. You managed to buy a house for hundreds of thousands of dollars less than what everyone else around you has paid. and now because you built the house, you're also going to save thousands of dollars on future home maintenance because you know how to repair it. Good on you! You're an example for everyone, in my opinion!

I'm certainly happy with the final cost. It came out to more than I guesstimated early on, but I'm still happy and you're right: it was within the budget of my savings and thus I didn't have to take out a mortgage that would've added $150,000 extra on top or more?

Ultimately, you have saved yourself thousands over the life of your home by doing the work yourself. Not only will you be able to repair/maintain the property, but also you building this for yourself you probably have a higher quality build. Having it built by a company you have no control over the quality of the work. By building it for yourself I'm certain that you took the time to do things right and not cut corners to hit some kind of deadline. Having that kind of security in knowing things were done right is absolutely priceless!

I may have missed some aspects that seemed to be missing in your breakdown. In Australia, all container homes must be on a full concrete pad. They must also be fully insulated as shipping containers are freezing in winter and hot in summer. Connection to water, electricity, gas, and sewage must be carried out by licensed trades people. All plans must be submitted to the shire council. There must also be hardwired smoke alarms, exhaust fans in the bathroom and kitchen, and any other safety requirements met in the area you want to place the structure.

As a former General Contractor from Florida that’s outrageous!! My first house cost me $8500.00 excluding furniture, appliances and land which was $3000.00 for an acre. I done all the work myself at 17. Built more for less perk’s of being a contractor. I’ve built house’s much cheaper with the only cost being septic and well. Those day’s are gone. Now retired to an island in Southeast Asia. But great Job!! Oh my first house was 28x36.

The studs are for creating a thermal break as well, somewhere to put insulation. Also serves to put ductwork for water and electrical and a means to place drywall. And like the other commenter said, if you make a cut into any wall of a shipping container, it needs to be braced with something like lumber.
@zechariahsalisbury6029
@zechariahsalisbury6029 2 жыл бұрын
So where the cutouts are you would need a standard 16" on center stud wall, sure, but wherever there aren't any it seems like you could do less. Also, since he has multiple shipping containers put together, the combined strength of basically double steel walls in places should be stronger than a stud wall anyway. Theoretically, that's where your savings comes in with shipping container houses. I've seen other people that use more like 1x or as a place to fasten drywall and such, after spray foam, then a stud wall to separate then bathroom. They also just had cutouts for the windows and a door, not as open of a floor plan. Anyway, that's why I asked my original question because it seems like that would cancel out most of the acclaimed benefits, cost wise at least. The plus side is that in the current market, his return on investment potential cancels this out, but it peaks my interest that he was told to basically double up on materials in some areas of the house. I mean these shipping containers go through a lot more than bad weather with their originally intended uses.
