Very generous of you.... and they'd learn from a Professional. There's lots of little tricks to learn in setting up the motor on a rebuild, that only come with extensive experience. Cheap head gaskets on high compression motors is one of them, stay away. He should probably build something stock with 80" displacement, so the motor stays together.

When I was 15 1/2 my father bought me a dune buggy with a blown motor. I ordered the parts from JC Whitney, and dad paid the bill. It seemed like forever before my parts arrived, but when they finally showed up, I started my rebuild. Two weeks later I had it complete and running. I was still 3 months away from getting my license, but we lived on a farm, so I got lots of wheel time before I was legal to go on the highway. I learned so much from that experience. Thanks Dad. That was all in 1976.

Throw in a made-in-Wisconsin S&S crate engine of about any size you want, they are designed as Harley replacement engines. Available at J&P Cycles or Dennis Kirk, both vendors in the midwest (no affiliation but good sources). One will cost about $7,500 or about what the whole bike is worth. But it will be a killer engine.

@schnell356
@schnell356 11 ай бұрын
@@macattack1392 The TC engine in the bike and an S&S engine are both after-market products. S&S may be better known, I hadn't heard of TC. You might have to find another Harley for another Harley engine vs. just buying an engine only, in a crate. Buying a new crate engine gives one flexibility on displacement vs. having to rebuild another Harley engine to the spec and displacement you want. Just another way to proceed vs. rebuilding after-market equipment.

Just a few thoughts... If there is enough side play in the primary chain that you can remove it without pulling the compensator AND clutch hub, replace the chain. Side note, I think the bolt for the clutch hub is left handed thread. That motor is a cheap knock-off. Fixing it is probably a waste of money unless someone like Craig is willing to do the labor for free and Hillbilly provides the parts. Personally, I think he would be better off with a certified HD rebuilt motor. Drain plug on the primary cover (depending on year) may be a tapered thread. If so, do not overtighten or you will crack the case. Tightening down the head bolts involves tightening to a specific torque, marking the bolt and taking it another 1/4 or 1/2 turn. That stretches the bolt, so they should be replaced for reassembly. Be sure to flush both the oil tank and all oil lines. Hillbilly may not like this, but long term reliability comes with not going crazy with performance parts. Runout on the crank wheels is CRITICAL. If you don't know what you are doing, leave it to the pros! I love you and Hillbilly, but for the sake of a reliable good running machine I would suggest you farm out the rebuild to a shop that knows what it is doing. JMHO.

One trick I have used to help kids learn to ride a bike is this: Have them stand on the side of the bike. You, the parent, grabs one of the handle bars. Then rotate your wrist to move the bike to side to side. This shows the kids that by the to show then that by turning their wrist, they can counteract the lean. Give it a try, and let me know how this trick works out for you.

I’m know very little about the Harley engines but I do enjoy trying to understand the whys and what furs of different designs. Interesting thing about these is because the rod is made for both cylinders, they don’t evenly offset each other as the two pistons go up and down. You end up with pressure then vacuum then pressure inside the crankcase as the engine rolls over. Lots of jokes about Harleys leaking oil but the crankcase (and other) gaskets take a beating, gettin pushed back and forth as the engine runs. The vent for the air to go in and out isn’t just open all the time either, I think those flat spring valves you noticed are part of the PCV system. I think some of them even require the vent be timed with the crank! It’s way different than most of the stuff you guys work on and know about. If you decide to build this one up, get some good instructions and follow them closely, don’t assume anything or it will bite you! Good luck whatever you decide. It’s still a cool bike and worthy of being put together right. 👍 I think the flat black is a cool look, kinda ratty but that sorta fits HillBilly I think he would agree. BTW, do you know why it has a bell hangin under it? 🤔

The motorcycle lifts from Harbor Freight are just fine really. You just can't leave it pumped up all the time, put in the safety lock and lower it onto that if you're going to keep it up for long. Also, you need to upgrade the wheel clock. Harbor Freight has a good one that will mount right on and then you'll be all set.

Another person would of scooped the parts up and pushed the project into a corner. But,Robbies' friendship with Hillbilly trumps that scenario. Robbie and his sweetheart are truly wonderful people! Replacement motors are the way to go!

Here's a tip Harleys have different length bolts on the Primary cover and else where. Get a piece of cardboard draw the cover and push the screws into the cardboard it in the proper placement. you don't want to run a long screw into a blind hole you'll bust a case. Change the primary chain tensioner while your in there they're only good for 50k miles. Don't forget the lock tight when you reassemble.

Harley motors? Your neighbor down the street knows everything unfortunately. And then you get one apart and see how good he was! Such an old design compared to newer stuff but the sound and bravado still keeps them in business, well until you pull into a Harley Dealership with a Shovel. The good days are becoming memories.

Like I posted on the previous video: Don't even think about rebuilding that Ultima. You want a big V-Twin, go to S&S and decided how much horsepower, and how much ya wanna spend. The V111 is a beast. Or find yourself a decent used 80" EVO to stick in her. Or... ya can drive or fly into SE Michigan and buy my 1993 FLHS and ride it home. I'll let it go for a lot less than sourcing a good V-Twin. And for a bit more, I'll toss in a real bike lift (Direct Lift), smaller lift, stand, and a whole bunch of OEM and aftermarket parts. I'm 72, and I haven't ridden it much in the past four years. It needs to find a good home and someone who'll ride/enjoy it.

I don't disagree, but it was a free bike and I doubt Hillbilly has deep pockets. Ultima sells every part for that thing and so its likely the cheapest way to go and I suspect Hillbilly can handle it. Heck, Ultima should just give them the parts for advertising.

You likely have them done and on the bicycle. But you are better to take off the pedals and let her just use her feet to hold herself up and walk/run on the bike. She will learn to balance faster than with training wheels. Edit: Assuming that with the E part of the Ebike turned off the bike can still roll. Otherwise get her a regular bike first and pull those pedals off. Likely one or two days to learn.

The ebike is a problem. You’re trying to teach your kid to run before they walk. Plus with those training wheels in the center like that, she could easily run over her leg if her foot comes off the pedals. I’ve found that the best way is to start with 2 training wheels, then remove one so they still can lean to one side if they get in trouble. I think a lot of parents put the training wheels on, then wait for the child to tell them when they want them off. You need to remove the training wheels once you, the parent, thinks they’re ready.

Strip the bike down to frame clean and if needed re powder coat the frame. Paint the tins and bags, and lastly drop a new motor in the bike. I think I would look at one of Harleys stock motors. I never felt like I needed more then my of Heritage had. And I would also go Fuel injected where you have so much elevation change when riding in Utah.

Hey Hillbilly. That's not a crank cover it's a primary cover. That's your primary chain. The problem your going to have is behind the clutch pack. There is a bushing that is pressed on that has to come off to pull the inner primary. Been wrenching on bikes for 40 + years. If ya have any issues or questions hit me up.

Back in the ‘70’s I bought an old Harley, more as a project than anything. I tore it completely apart and rebuilt it, with no experience other than basic mechanical knowledge. I rode it for nearly seven years and sold it for the usual reason… a new baby. That was the only reason I would have sold it. Hillbilly will love that bike.

Your best move you could make at this time is take the crank to the harley shop, along with the cylinders and heads. They can rebuild the crank and install new rods, bearings, pistons and rings, hone the cylinders, and fix the heads and valves if needed. Tou should also replace the main bearings, maybe clutch if needed, and a manual and put it back together, and ride it. Thom
