Today is April 8 2024, and we should be having a total eclipse of the sun today. Jim takes the horses and logs up at Paul Smiths College today and Brenda shares how the horses react to the eclipse on the farm.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Everyone forgets to look at the shadows right before and after the eclipse. With a very fine line of light being cast the shadows become incredibly defined.

I live in Tennessee , we had a large portion of the eclipse but not the total darkness . The birds and some neighbors dogs got a bit excited . I told my husband Rick there was a mocking bird in our front yard where we watched , I said " that bird used about every thing in his vocabulary , it was very excited and fun to hear all his sounds ". Thanks for sharing this video . 🧡💛💚💙

Very cool, I watched it here in East Texas with my horses and dogs. The roosters started crowing and the goats started up too, didn't have much of an impact on my horses or dogs! It was really a very cool moment in time knowing millions were looking up all at the same times!!! Let's keep it that way! Love y'all! Annette

We live in Peoria AZ; drove the motorhome to Arlington TX to experience the eclipse. We watched from the time the moon begin traveling in front of the sun all through the total eclipse out the other side. We were so excited to watch it and when it was over people started talking about what they were going to have for dinner and other somewhat mundane things. My husband likened it to watching the credits at a movie. Around here, KOA in Arlington, all the dogs seemed fine; there was no acting from them, but the birds went completely quiet and as the sun came back, they started chirping again. It was definitely a very cool day. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I was happy to see the horses reaction. I fed my horses only a small breakfast and saved the rest for during the eclipse so they’d have their heads down eating. The strange thing was, it was cloudy here on the Canadian prairies but my horses went crazy galloping around. I wondered if it was coincidental but seeing your horses reaction confirmed for me that my horses knew something was happening. Wish I could have seen it in person but it was fun seeing it with the Gordons.

My daughter went south of IL to experience the eclipse and she said the birds, pelicans and the turkey vultures were very quiet. One turkey vulture stood next to her which it was very very weird. Wasn't sick or anything. After it was over with, it flew off. In my city, the strange shadows, taking in a yellowish hue, everyone looked out of the windows, cameras, glasses or the risk takers, looked up at the sun. I didn't have glasses so I made do with my metal coriander and white paper. I could see the segments between the sun and moon meeting together in the center. It was very weird feeling. It got a bit cooler, street lights were on even there was some light. My cat and guinea pigs were unaffected by this.

Thanks for posting. I thought of you as the eclipsed passed over New York. My guess is Bill & Baron were in "work mode" and didn't allow themselves to react to the darkness. Whereas your other horses were able to roam and being prey animals were considering fleeing - except the "light turned on" quickly. Such a treat! TWO videos in one day! Thank you for sharing.

I saw the 2017 eclipse and remember the 360 degree “sunset.” Interesting that it bothered Bree and Duke but none of the others. This year my backyard was 99.1% totality and one alley light came on briefly but it was nothing like 2017. That 0.9% really made a difference. Thanks so much for sharing your experience up in northern N.Y.!
