Maybe 40 years ago we would have been thrilled to have a light like the new Olight, but today, with so many choices of lights on the market, having a work light that only lasts 15 minutes on high is unacceptable. These are fewer jobs that require 3,000 lumens that could be completed in 15 minutes.
Beyond that, the battery life on this light is horrible and does not match up with the listings in the instructions or the box.
The build quality is what you would expect from light, but everything else is a complete fail!

After 15 minutes OF 3000 TURBO. It will still run at 1500 lumens for over 4.5 hours and another 3 hours at 900 Lumens. Still a crazy amount of light for that long all running on battery power

This is the runtime you can expect: - 3000 Lumen for 15min ... then stepping down - 1500 Lumen for 280min ... stepping down to - 900 Lumen for 180min => so a total of about 8 hours runtime THEN, finally, you can still connect an USB power-source and run the light without any limitation! ps The Milwaukee also will run for about 8hours - but will only provide 700 Lumen (at best!!!) On the other hand it has the BIG advantage of replacable batteries!

On white light setting they also say it will produce 230 lumens for 2,800 minutes or 46.66 hours (if you start and stay at those lumens) which is nearly 2 whole days! Enough light to do any small jobs. This light is not for everyone considering you can not replace the battery, from what the video said, but the remote feature is great and it being an emergancy power bank is really cool too. I appreciate that you took the time to comment the actual specs, just wanted to add to your comment 👍

So the problem is that there’s only 2 modes: high and low. If there’s a medium with say 1500 lumens for a long consistent run time would solve the issue imo. I think part of the problem presented in the video is that you are burning a lot of power in 15 mins being at 3k lumens…

@@n0ne846 Apologies for my other reply. After sending it I realized I misunderstood your comment initially. I agree with you, the fact that there are no set modes at all or clicks into specific lumen settings in-between low and max is a major weakness in this light. People fawn over these names, but personally I often can't stand "flashlight brands". They are so used to turbo modes and tactical whatever settings that when they go and make a light for trades people they totally miss the boat. Saying your flashlight is "4000 lumens" but steps down due to thermal throttling after 2 minutes may be business as usual for the EDC folks, but brands associated with the automotive sector that may not be the biggest names in the world in lighting just make better more useful products. They survive heavy impacts, brake clean, and after an hour of use are still super bright. But that doesnt move units on a sell page pointing out all the "peak" specs you can enjoy.

I have 3,000 lumens flashlights - you can prepare coffee with them after 15 minutes of use. It is obvious this light throttles down to avoid overheating, because it is encased in plastic and has no way to get rid of the heat. You need a massive chunk of metal with lots of fins to deliver 3000 lumens for hours. I would set the Odiance to 900 lumens from the get-go, which is the best way to operate it. The efficiency of the leds (lumen/watt) reduces dramatically at the higher intensities of illumination...

Not sure this review is fair. The run times are clearly stated on their website: White Light (High) 3,000~1,500~900 lumens Run time White Light (High) 15 + 280 + 180 minutes White Light (Low) 230 lumens Run time White Light (Low) 2,800 minutes While I like preset levels, so one could know more/less how long to expect it to last...those run times are actually not bad at all. That said, for a battery work light I'll stick with Ryobi, just because I have so many batteries and can just switch out quickly if I need to.
@minicomma

I think the specs read that max run time on low is 2,800 mins, which is over 46 hours; Not 4 hours that this video is saying. At 3,000 lumen, 15 mins, then step down 1,500 lumen for 4.6 hours, followed by another step down to 900 lumens for 3 hours. That gives you 7.9 hours on high lumens combined; Or you can use t at 230 lumens for 46 hrs(!!). Great for any black-outs or camping trips, or even for workshops. Impressive for the price. If your work requires constant high lumen output (over 900+) for longer than 7.9 hours, then you're working too hard- LOL.

You should correct your information. The website clearly says it runs on low 200 lumens for 46.5 hours. Yes 15 min on high could be better but how long does your 4000 lumen light go for on high? Also it runs for 280 minutes at 1500 lumens after that first 15min step down from 3000 lumens. How is that bad you get 1500 lumens for over 4 hours. And after those 4+ hours it steps down again to a generous 900 lumens for an additional 3 hours. I don’t think you really need 3000 lumens to work on a car. Even 900 lumens would be a lot I would think. All in all I don’t have the light I front of me to see how far those lumen levels through out that light so maybe you would need those high lumens as compared to edc flashlights. I like your videos but I feel this one is a little misleading and could use some better comparisons and more accurate information. Cheers 🤙🤙

The work I do has a huge benefit for adjustable color temp. I find myself switching handheld lights multiple times a day just because of color temp. I dont need 4000 lumens, but i need run time. I dont want to get 2 hours into a job and then have a dead work light. And for the size, it would not be good to pack for travel jobs where i need to fly since i would have to pack it in my carry on. If I buy a 3,000 lumen work light, I ecpect that I should be able to use that light to do a job. Look at the 10,000 lumen Metabo HPT I just did a review on. I can could on that light to provide me with all the lumens advertised for a full day on the jobsite. I bought a work light, not a camping light. When I need the light, I have to get it. Advertise this as a 1000 lumen work light with the capability of short bursts of 3,000 lumens. Simple. No working person that needs a lot of light will be happy with this as you cannot even make it through 2 hours of the work day before we are down to 200 lumen. Do your plug in work lights dim down from 1,000 lumen to 200 lumen after 2 hours? How would you feel about that?

2 Hours? What? It drops to 1500 lumens and stays there for about 4.5 hours and then still gives you 900 lumens for another 3… Also lumens it’s a logarithmic scale, half the lumens doesn’t mean half the brightness. So you get plenty of light for a pretty good time. And push comes to shove, connect the light and it runs as it charges if you need longer run times.

If you need 3000 lumens for more then 15 minutes, you should find another solution, anyway. Some lights powered by a diesel generator, maybe. Measuring how last on low After you use it 15 minutes on Turbo its... wrong. All measurements are done at full battery.

With lights on Amazon claiming 100,000 lumens and more, the honest manufacturers had to find creative ways to stretch their numbers to the limits. So the new breed of flaslights all have thousands of lumens, that they can emit for one minute or so, because of the thermal inertia. You need to divide the advertised top lumens by four to have the true value that the light can emit continously. Of all the brands on the market, only Surefire and Maglite advertise the continous lumen value for their torch. My Fenix LR60R emits 21,000 lumens at start, then it drops to 8,000 and stabilise on 6,000. The true lumen number is right in the model name; and this is a $400+ flashlight...

We should be targeting the ANSI agency which created the FL1 standard. This standard says that you only have to output your published Lumen level for the first 30 seconds or so, and then you can drop to whatever lumen value you want after that. Then you can sit at an extremely low value for hours and hours to plump up the stated runtime spec until the battery eventually dies.
@dobledekersoulwrekr
@dobledekersoulwrekr 2 жыл бұрын
I think that's a little backwards. I thought the light had to run for 30 seconds before the measurement started. And then measured in intervals from there
@midwestengimaker8443
@midwestengimaker8443 2 жыл бұрын
@@dobledekersoulwrekr The wording in the standard says that the official reading can take place anywhere between 30 seconds and 2 minutes after it is powered on, so manufacturers last for around 30-40 seconds, then start dropping after that official reading takes place. Definitely crappy, but they are technically following the standard. Then runtime is calculated when the lumen output reaches 10% of the initial reading. So if they start with 1000 lumen, as soon as the light output drops to below 100 lumen, that's the measured runtime. So to get around that, manufacturers will hover around 150 lumens as long as possible to bump up their runtime spec. Again, crappy, but still technically following the standard.

@@WorkshopAddict I think you got a dud. I bought one and subsequently saw your video so, of course, I had to test it. I don't have a professional setup so I did this by comparing flashlights I had of known luminosity and using a reflection method to dissipate the light. Olight's levels and stated run times are spot on. The 3000 lumens is only 15mins but nearly 5 hrs at 1500 lumens (after which two battery indicator bars showing) and 3hrs at 900lumens. After that, it switches off but there is a 'reserve' that runs (if you set it to 200 lumens) for 15 mins and switches off again. After that, I got another 3 minutes and probably could have got a few minutes again but stopped. If you set it to 1000 lumens, you'd probably get 10 hours of use. You are right, though, as a work light, it is really 1500 lumens, not 3000. The color temperature is great because you can adjust to near sunlight (5000k) for correct color definition or colder/warmer for other uses. Plus remote control. Only downside is the internal battery. So, overall, I think it is a great light for a home DIY'r to have but If I was a pro, I would want to be able to swap batteries on the go.

If you’re making a product and you want it to be successful , and you want to charge $200 for it, you should take the time to thoroughly understand who you’re making the product for and what their needs are. Milwaukee is a great example of this. They don’t even specialize in lights but they take the time to understand the needs of their users and deliver products that are practical and very useful. I think OLight skimps on R&D to save a buck and they’re riding the coat tails of people buying whatever they put their name on. This will catch up to them though. OLight makes some great products , I wish they’d make more of an effort in quality and r&d and focus less on new colors and rebranding existing products for a quick buck.

@@jasandper There are a lot of things to "hate" about the Olight - but it really shouldn't be the runtimes: a) You have the OPTION of 3000 lumen, if you choose 900 (or less) it will run for days! b) In contrast to MANY manufacturers Olight only publishes reliable & truthful runtimes

Seems pretty disappointing. Non replaceable battery is a killer, can't just swap in a fresh battery, no deal.

One thing you fail to understand is that Olight needs to leave room for improvement. (Sarcastic). Otherwise they cannot market the same crappy product as "improved", later on. This is one of my big gripes with Olight compared to lights like Nitecore is they advertise "3000" lumens but actaully it is only a 1500 lumen light. Same with their flashlights.

That o light sounds like a good concept like the ryobi light that changes the color temp and 200 Lumens and 3000 Lumens yikes 15 minutes that's it on high and 2 hours on 200 Lumens that sucks Wow looks like a sweet light till ya hear the specs interesting it has a remote @WorkshopAddict

White light specs from Olight: 3,000 lumens for 15 minutes, sure. But the rest of your statement on the specs is just false. It proceeds to produce 1,500 lumens for 280 minutes or 4.66 hours Then continues at 900 lumens for another 180 minutes or 3 hours. Read the specs yourself though, they say it will produce 230 lumens for 2,800 minutes or 46.66 hours (if you start and stay at those lumens) which is nearly 2 whole days! Enough light to do any small jobs. This light is not for everyone considering you can not replace the battery, from what the video said, but the remote feature is nice and it being an emergancy power bank in pretty cool too. I only replied to your comment because of how wrong your statement was, no hard feelings here. Hope you have a good rest of your day/night and work hard with whatever lights work with you, take care.

@@AntonioClaudioMichael I have bought one and have tested it. The one I got matched Olight's figures. I can only think that the one the reviewer got was a dud because he used it for 10 minutes and it was showing 2 bars (meaning 25%-50%). I still had 2 bars left after 15 mins at 3000 lumens AND nearly 5 hours at 1500 lumens (so over 5 hrs at Max). Great light for a home DIY jobs but wouldn't get it if I was a pro as I would want swappable batteries in case I forgot to recharge.
