He’s calm and I like that. But his claim to be a filmmaker adds nothing, everything he mentions is basic knowledge. He might as well put “black man reacting” if he wants the extra attention.

Fun Fact: The movie was based on a Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" and was originally to star Richard Dreyfuss. David Cronenberg was attached as director and came up with the idea of mutants. After disagreements with the producers, Cronenberg quit the movie and it went into development hell. Schwarzenegger was a big fan of the original story and approached the producers to star but they turned him down. After Cronenberg left and the movie became in limbo, Schwarzenegger bought the rights of the original story from the producers, and help fund the movie with his own money. He then hired Paul Verhoeven to direct after being impressed by RoboCop. The direction of the movie changed from a space noir to a space action movie.

well, considering the story was written by a disorganized schizophrenic who lived on meth because the giant head kept telling him to write at least one novel a day, or else he would have the CIA kill him.... it figures they had to change a few things when adapting it. still neat to think that Arnie used to be as much, if not more, of a genre star than an action hero when he started...

I remember reading that the lead was supposed to be a Woody Allenesque guy who found he could do such deadly things. The remake made the mistake of remaking the movie, not interpreting Dick's story differently or more faithfully. the following is the plot of the story via wikipedia and it is very different from the way the movie ended: Douglas Quail works a menial office job in the "not too distant future." His biggest dream has always been to visit Mars but is constantly dissuaded by his wife. Quail eventually discovers Rekal Incorporated, where he goes to receive memory implants of having traveled to Mars. To the shock of the Rekal technicians, under sedation, Quail somehow regains erased memories of who he really is. Quail's memories reveal that he really is a secret agent who has been to Mars. The Rekal representative, McClane, refunds half of Quail's money and sends him home. Quail thinks that the operation was a failure because his memories are blurry, and he remembers his trip to the office to get the procedure done. He returns home still believing the memories are fake but discovers a box of fauna smuggled from Mars in his desk. He confronts his wife about whether or not he has actually been to Mars, and she angrily leaves him. Two armed men suddenly enter and reveal that Quail has a telepathic transmitter in his head that allows them to read his thoughts. Through this interaction, Quail suddenly remembers why he had his memories erased: Quail wasn't just a secret agent, he was an assassin who killed a political opponent for Earth's government. With his memories returned, the armed men appeal to Quail to surrender, but Quail, with his abilities awakened as well, fights them off and escapes. Wondering what to do, Quail's former commanders suddenly speak to him through the telepathic transmitter. Quail suggests going through another mind-wipe, but this time replacing his current awareness of being an assassin with the pleasant memory of an exciting life. His commanders agree, feeling that it is their obligation to help their former agent. Quail turns himself in and is placed with a psychiatrist to figure out what his own personal desires are. When he was young, Quail used to fantasize that as a child he came across minuscule [rodent-like] aliens that were going to launch a full invasion of Earth with their superior technology. However, young Quail was so kind and accepting of the aliens that they decided to hold off on their invasion as long as he was alive. While finding the fantasy narcissistic, his commanders agree to plant the memories at Rekal. To everyone's shock, those memories turn out to be real as well.

I used to as well but I don't think it was vr anymore. The fact that we get so many scenes where Quaid isn't present and the "illusion" is still happening shows that it's not a vr implant. This is purely from the movie standpoint, not book. If the vr implant is supposed to be what really happened, then the movie does a very sloppy job of making it ambiguous and it could have been made better.

This movie holds a special place for me. When I was touring the new school that I was transferring to this lady came into the office and spoke to one of the administrators. My mom and I watched her, and after she left my mom said, "She looks just like the lady from Total Recall!" After I became a student there (San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts) I found out that she was Pricilla Allen, and that she WAS the actress who played the part of Arnold dressed up as the woman who goes through the detector and who's head explodes! She was the director of our drama department. Sadly she passed away in 2008. She was a wonderful teacher and human! R.I.P Mrs Allen! ❤️

James vs Cinema, another great reaction channel! Supposedly there is the same musical que when he is "dreaming" so at the end when it plays it's supposed to signify that it is all a dream and he is lobotomized. At least that's what i think I remember seeing in a behind the scenes. I could also be full of shit. Great review gents!

Everything that's happening to Quaid is exactly what the Rekall guy tells him when he's still trying to sell him the memory implant. From being an agent saving a planet right down to the sleazy brunette Quaid chooses a few minutes later. Basically the entire plot is given away right from the start and nonetheless you (the audience) don't notice that while watching the movie progress, which is totally insane and absolutely ingenious. When you realize that pulling this stunt off successfully is pretty much unbelievable and nearly impossible, you'll also realize that it is a downright masterpiece and truly one of a kind. Not to forget that there's no digital/visual fx happening, except for the walk-through body scanner. But the rest: Miniatures, stop motion, animatronics, rear projection, sfx makeup, photochemical stuff, etc... One of the the very last movies beside for example "Alien 3" right on the brink to the digital/visual fx age. It's so effing beautiful. Movie making and story telling at its very best... ^^
