Leonidas was the First king to have that name, Leonidas I, He was 17th king of Agiad. Lakedaimon was diarchy. Leonidas I was the 3rd son. He entered the Agoge following the law, stating only 1st born son doesn't need to enter. He was in his late 50's at his death. B: 540BC - D: 11th of August 480BC. He died by 4 arrows. He was among the first to die in the event of "300". The last stand. His body was mutilated by the Persians: Decapitated, crucified at the Battle of Platea. His head brought back to Sparta after 40 years by Xerxes' grandson His reign was 9 years. He married his brother's daughter, Gorgo. He was at Marathon. Leonidas = Λεωνίδης = Son of lion.

Actually, the other Spartans kept the body hidden before it could be mutilated, and it was eventually shipped back to Sparta for a proper funeral..

Faaaaaalse tho. There were way more spartans at the battle, though only 300 stayed after xerxes discovered the passage to surround them.

Great video but some parts are misleading... 1) All Spartan boys start training at a young age (7) so it doesn't make Leonidas any more special than the other Spartans. 2) Sparta's 300 warriors are only the elite of the elite, as they didn't bring the larger army bcuz they feared that they might insult the Gods if they go to war during a feast. 3) Wasn't the Persian Navy defeated in Salamis, not the Persian Army? 4) Fun fact: The actual Spartan army was on the way to reinforce Leonidas but he wasn't able to hold out :(

The Shield of Leonidas is to small. Hoplites had shields up to 90 cm in diameter.
