While this is great, they couldn't have done this in months, and for free. It was likely a planned DLC cow. After backlash they integrated some features and released what they had in the works. Unfortunately most developers do this now... Release half a game and sell the rest as DLC.

@@chocolaterain5097 Yeah, I don't want to give them a pass. I suspect they did plan this, but not quite this extensive but only did so because of the backlash. @happycompy
@happycompy 3 ай бұрын
This is one of the most head-scratching...choices (?) they made, because it's so low-effort. You already made distinct, unique rosters for the Illiad characters in Troy. Why would you NOT just bring them over? "Historical accuracy" kind of flies out of the window when the faction is led by fucking Achilles lmao. Another minor gripe like yours is that the Amazons were excluded because of their historical inaccuracy (fair enough)...but instead we got the Cimmerians who are, you guessed it, historically inaccurate. Amazons had a unique unit roster too, much more so than the Cimmerians. Was a mistake imo, especially because we already have the Myth characters anyway.

I for one have been enjoying both the multiplayer scene and the campaign’s customisation you can change lethality, randomize starting positions and make the collapse easier or worse depending on settings and gameplay. My favourite historical era has got to be the bronze age and seeing Mesopotamians, Mycenenes, Egyptians, Cannanites and Hittites battle it out has been a dream come true. Its definitely worth getting it after the price changes and the time period is fresh having never before been seen from the franchise (unless from mods). CA Sophia have some balance changes to make specifically around unit caps and lethality on certain weapon types. Right now ranged weapons are incredibly dangerous and chariots have a hard time punching through light and medium infantry but the foundations are solid. Keen to see new people on the battlefield.

Great review HappyCompy. Makes you wonder how Pharaoh's reception would have been had CA led with _this_version of the game instead of the pared-down scenario that released as the main campaign? I've often defended CA in the past even after past mistakes but I think the post-Three Kingdoms period marked a change in CA for the worse. I hope they remember the lesson of Pharaoh when it's time to announce their next historical title.

Thanks Rex! Yeah I hope so too, but I'm honestly pretty pessimistic. CA has been down this apology tour route before after Rome 2's disaster launch. Unless the perverse incentives that plague the AAA gaming industry change (they won't), it's more likely than not that CA keeps releasing turds that they have to polish later into decent games. Just my 2 cents.

This is one of my favourite total war. Fun fact: if you are playing as a horde and using Dominance skill the temporary army that you have from the settlement doesn't count to administration level but when you are losing this army - it lowers your administration level per every unit you lose. That means you have administration points on minus what leads to having the highest administration and +140% to upkeep. This is one of the greatest mechanics in the whole series and they didn't even have noticed that it has such an important problem. So the title of this film describes perfectly what I'm thinking about this game.

Not just "it's alright." But "it's really good." It hits different knowing that I'm on the same page as the people who have been watching the channel for years. It's not just you, I've seen a few other fellow Rome 2 boomers come out of the woodwork and say they're enjoying Dynasties, and it's so fucking sick that I'm not alone here lol. On a side note, I actually thought of your mods "A More Aggressive AI" yesterday, because I keep seeing people complaining that the Pharaoh AI is too aggressive and I'm worried that CA is going to pacify it because of people complaining. The AI was WAY too passive pre-Dynasties, and I LIKE how aggro it is now. Minor Factions is what attracted me the most and I play the most. Assyria is tough considering you are the King of the Universe, but a great way to roleplay as "I must reunite the realm!" Another fun playthrough I did was one of the Hittite minor kingdoms, Carchemish. The roleplay mindset was "I can choose my throne as I am at the crossroads of empires" and eventually I invaded the Hittite Empire with a multicultural army from the Canaanite and Assyrian/Akkadian rosters.

I wish they would bring back the UI of Rome1 or Medieval2 for settlements, where they had actual images. It was just so much more pleasing for the eyes. I also really would like them to improve the dynastie system where the characters develope by themselves. They could take some inspiration from the nemesis system from the middle earth games. It would also be cool if you would research technology such as a new armor-production-method. You could have an own creator for your specific designed troupes. Give them a spear-> costs extra 50gold Want a bigger shield-> 25gold extra + 5armor and defense Want them to have more endurance? -> each soldier gets a water-bottle where you can replenish some energy when you click on a „drink now“ button…

Still can't get over making Achilles and Ajax minor factions and removing their elite unique units from Troy. In a game whose biggest criticism was lack of unit diversity seems like a very CA shoot yourself in the foot move.

I bought the game, even though you advised me not to. I should've listened. 🤦🏼‍♂️ Why do they make the new total war games with such weird collision?! Rome 1 and Medieval 2, you felt a cavalry charge, you felt any charge, horses would flip if they ran into pikes, the whole line would fly if hit unprepared from the side! It's like they blob up into masses without that smack.

Hopefully some of those unique units under the minor factions will be worked in. Looking into it, Hanigalbat is the Mitanni after its fall from supremacy hence its special chariots being labeled that. I suppose they were trying to allow for a chance to recapture the glory
@fyeahusa
@fyeahusa 3 ай бұрын
Hanigalbat isn't really the Mitanni after its fall. While the Assyrian's continued to use the name Hanigalbat for the area, it was ruled by a branch of the royal family of Assyria as a vassal to the kings of Assyria. The character we start off with in charge of Hanigalbat in game historically usurped the Assyrian throne, becoming king himself, hence why they made Hanigalbat the major faction instead of Assyria proper.

After about 20 hours I turned lethality off as well, as I realised 90 percent of my battles were frantic attempts to get to the enemy archers before they delete my units in seconds. This combibed with surprisingly competent AI at screening their own ranged units with other fighters turned all the battles into a hectic mess and if the AI had ranged superiority, it was over. Even formations were useless, my super elite medjay in shield formation would go bye bye in 2 volleys.With lethality off ranged is still strong, but not insta win anymore. Might try the mod you mentioned though.

I have 13 regions and 3 provinces with edicts with all kind of source materials and I can hardly keep 3 armies with 10-15 units, while my enemies with only 3 regions can yield 5-7 armies with 20 stacks, even with units that need specific buildings to be produced that they dont have, horses, for example, and definitely no gold, no copper. How is that possible? AI is crazy and cheats constantly. I see constant examples. The game is brilliant in many aspects but absurd in so many others.

Why is most of the video Rome 1 music if you talked about campaign/battle tracks in such a good light?
@happycompy
@happycompy 3 ай бұрын
Because Rome 1's OST is the GOAT, and everyone knows it. No shade to Ian Livingstone or Richard Before, but Jeff Van Dyck's score for that game IS total war to me. I tried the Pharaoh music as background music during the edit but Rome's is just so much better, and it weirdly didn't drown out my voice like Pharaoh's did, despite it being louder in the mix. I agree with you that it was a poor editing choice, given that I like Pharaoh's ost. If I could go back, I'd switch out the soundtrack for Pharaoh's during the audio section of the vid. But I'd still keep Rome's for the rest 😂. Thanks for watching man 👍

@@Dolfy ayyeee good ear! Makes sense that you'd recognize the Arena music since you used to play. I use the battle music from Arena in some of my vids because I love the electric guitar in some of the tracks. Reminds me of the "300" movie soundtrack. Beddow did a good job on it. I'm curious what you think about this but imo his Rome 2 soundtrack sucked hard (aside from the main menu music), which is weird because he proved he can make good music with games like Napoleon, Warhammer, and Arena 🤷‍♂️. If I made a tier list of total war soundtracks, I would put Rome 2 in D tier.

What if CA Sophia decided to make a Shang vs Zhou Dynasty DLC for this game, to cash in more profits? Because Bronze Age China in Chinese history itself is often under represented. Most games sets in China were either Three Kingdomsera (3K Total War) and modern era(Battlefield 4). (On the other hand, based on artifacts and acheological evidences, the costumes and hair styles in late Shang and Early Zhou Dynasty era were similar to the later Greeks and Romans from the classical era.)

If they decide to make another sword and sandal Total War Title, I truly hope it will be based around the Achaemenid Empire especially after how amazing they did this dynasty expansion. Having the game release with a map spanning India to the Iberian Peninsula with Cyrus the Great as its poster boy for launch and possible DLCs could include different start dates such as: 1: The Neo-Assyrian Empire vs the Coalition of Chaldean Babylonians and Medes. 2: The Greco-Persian Wars. 3: Cyrus the Younger's campaign for the throne with his Greek 10,000 mercenaries. 4: Macedon under Phillip giving you the option to prevent assassination or go with Alex. 5: Rise of Rome, Wars of the Diadochi and Chandragupta Maurya conquest of all most of India, I mean most of India.
