+zellarsDD777 Except it failed him every step of the way. First he lost much of his army to the Gauls, then all but one elephant died during the trip over the Alps (not to mention he lost an eye), and finally, due to false intelligence, he was left with no reinforcements in Italy due to the states refusing to side with him. He did make the trek, but not without much sacrifice that led into his demise and the fall of Carthage.
@Sivos9099 жыл бұрын
+Nick De Meersman Argued, which means it didn't happen. Perhaps it could have ended that way, I won't even debate with you on that because yes, it might have gone in his favor. But the point is, he didn't. The fact it was even argued that it could have worked out in his favor proves that he wasn't exactly good at planning ahead. Therefore, not exactly a great feat considering he continually failed Carthage. It was an amazing attempt, however, just could have gone better if he thought through things like "Maybe there's a way to get pass the Gauls without war? Maybe there's a less dangerous path in the alps? Maybe the spies were mistaken?" In other words, have a back up plan. Don't rely solely on plan A. That is poor strategizing.

For example, after hearing the Senator say Hannibal will invade from the south and Syracuse will rise in revolt, you can hear him continue to say that they should reduce their taxation while he is being drowned out by the other senators. Agreed. The amount of balls it took for him to take the trek over the Alps was suicidal. That's why they never expected it. It's the same thing that happened when Scipio took his legions and invaded Africa. One thing that gets overlooked at the battle of Cannae is that Hannibal was able to hide his elite units in the flat terrain in the open. (all wearing Roman equipment no less) When they attacked the flanks, I'm sure the Roman's thought it was some type of friendly fire and couldn't catch on to the ruse quick enough to defend. Hannibal was truly Albert Einstein when it came to warfare. Mad respect.

+Sharkalope productions Um, no, not really. All the generals he defeated weren't "shit", they just weren't good enough. None of them were truly "shit". Perhaps at the river Trebia, the all-too eager Sempronius could have been said to be an incompetent leader, but I would argue that he was a victim of the Roman political system and expectations during that time period. When the Fabian strategy was in place, he managed to escape Fabius' army that had surrounded him in a trapped in a valley, with the only exit blocked by the Romans. And after that incident, Hannibal went to Fabius' manor, destroyed everything near it but his actual property. So now it would appear that Fabius was even more of a coward than he already was, but was also an idiot and possibly a traitor. He managed to draw so many Roman armies into supposedly good terrain to fight in, that is to say, flat and treeless. But at Trebia and Gerunium , he had hid troops in bushes or in ditches. And as you know the Romans were defeated. Except at Gerunium, the cautious Fabius saved them from certain defeat. And at Cannae, neither of the two consuls were fools. As you already know, Paullus was the grandfather of the historian patron Scipio Aemilianus, who would have defended his reputation. Varro on the other hand, not so lucky, he was the first in his family to become a consul. But we know that Varro wasn't a total idiot because he was later given important commissions and military commands. Of course Hannibal's victory at Cannae can largely be chalked up to how well he knew his opponent, who basically used the same tactics over and over again. Punch through the middle, eat away at the rest of the army from there. The deployment of his army was genius, the total encirclement of a large army with a smaller one, unheard of before. He knew how weak, or strong his troops were, and knew how strong the Romans were, and used this to his advantage. And at Zama, Hannibal had finally met his match. Not someone who merely "knew what they were doing" but someone who had much experience in conquering Spain and defeating Hasdrubal. But, Hannibal no longer had as many veteran troops he could rely on in battle. And I would still say he was a very good leader, being hired as a military advisor by the Seleucids many years later. Of course at Thermopylae and Magnesia the Seleucids lost to the Romans, but this is merely indicative of the bad fighting habits of most Hellenistic rulers of that time period, lack of discipline/bravery, and the disastrous use of chariots/elephants. But yes, his victories in the Second Punic War were hollow, amounting to nothing less than a mountain of dead Romans. Even if he did not intend it, his mountain of dead Romans set off a massive chain of events that culminated the death of the republic and birth of the empire.

It perfectly balances the multiple threats you can expect to face in TW with, finally, the terrible arrogance of the Roman Senate overlooking what we all know actually occurred - Hannibal's bold march over the Alps. Fantastic showcase of the paths available in grand strategy: conservative, slow warfare based on destroying the opponents' allies and economy, diplomacy to forge powerful alliances and cut your enemy's feet out from under him, and, lastly, daring, high-risk high-strategy military maneuvers gambling to win or lose it all. Its use of hindsight is masterful in that respect. While the Romans are distracted defending three fronts, the only one they really overlook - the Alps - almost led to Rome's total defeat.

A decade has passed and this trailer remains the greatest piece of cinema Total War has produced, with a nuanced understanding of every aspect of the dream players engage in. The sound design alone is masterful, but when combined with all the details and the sheer kino of history itself, is unsurpassed.

He could've if he had support of the carthaginian senate. The senate never supported him but called him to defend carthage like a bitch when scipio attacked. Hannibal was just not the same Hannibal as he lost most of his veterans and even his brothers. To think that a general could achieve so much is just incredible. He remained undefeated for nearly 16 years.

Imagine if woolly mammoths were still alive by then and living in that region for Hannibal to command. THAT would've been awesome, seeing them tank the cold weather and live to rampage through Rome. Hannibal probably still would've failed to bring down Rome, but it would've been badass.
@RexGalilae3 жыл бұрын
Mammoths wouldn't have survived in the Italian climate though. They'd probably only be found in the Siberia at the time
@symmetrymilton45423 жыл бұрын
The last of them had died out nearly three millennia before this. Close in the grand scheme of things, but not close enough.
@bryanjacla1068 Жыл бұрын
You mean mammoths that survived from what happened 12,000 years ago and adapted to the climate during that time? That would change also the dynamics of warfare. Europeans would have access to 'war mammoths', thereby the Romans would not be surprised if Hannibal brought his war elephants. Hell, even the Romans might have their own war mammoths, so as the Celts.

And in the end it is the Carthaginian senators who refused to reinforce him while Rome kept pouring out new legions. Sometimes your closest allies are greatest enemies
@Admiral45-107 ай бұрын
Carthage had its reasons - the Numidian King allied with Rome at the time, so they had to diversify some of their forces. However, Hannibal has eventually failed at that one aspect in the military, which has defeated every other great commander in history - Napoleon I Bonaparte in Spain, Carolus XII in Russia, General Robert Lee in USA, Alexander the Great in India, or Toyotomi Hideyoshi in Korea - *logistics.* He couldn't sustain any long hold in the Italian Peninnsula (mostly due to lack of siege equipment), and was hoping to defeat Rome in one or multiple decisive battles, that would leave Roman military defenseless against him - that didn't happen, soon the stalemate has occurred, and as such Hannibal could no longer properly supply his armies. It was a similar scenario to the Secession War in the USA in XIXth Century - after a series of successes, South has exhausted its forces it couldn't replenish.
