I wish I was here when you fist began the game. I would've suggested to you a strategy that essentially makes all the hellenic factions impervious to enemy urban offensives. This means that you could've employed only militia hoplites to guard your cities, and they would've beaten an enemy 2x or even 3x larger, almost every time. This strategy would've saved untold thousands of denarii, and allowed you to field at least one more full army on the map. The hoplites are unmatched in urban combat, in this game.
@askthepizzaguy Жыл бұрын
I liked the opening move of treating diplomacy as something that is intended to serve a short term interest, like gaining more money. The factions in this game particularly on the hardest difficulties do not form agreements that are worth the parchment. Alliances at perfect relations and perfect reputation will end and they'll invade you without warning whether you share a border or not, so you generally have to treat all borders as hostile and prepare for invasion. I close off all the bridges by using forts in front that they have to take first, and then I have an army on the bridge that cannot be defeated. I let them take the fort since forts are worthless for defense and create a choke point they have to funnel out of just to attack you, similar to a bridge. Or I sit on the bridge and wait, with long range archers and/or long range horse archers, phalanxes or other useful melee infantry, and some cavalry to mop up routers, typically just a general. I make trade agreements since it benefits my merchants and I get an income bonus due to trade. I sell maps, I sell trade rights, I sell peace, I sell alliances, I sell anything that can drain the treasury of any faction and add to my own. Then I go about my business noting none of the agreements I have sold will do anything to stop a war, and I make ready for said war, using the money from negotiation to bolster my defenses, or offenses if applicable. My initial goal is to create a defensible set of borders. Provinces with choke points in mountains, bridges, bodies of water acting as barriers for land armies, places I can slow down invaders and defeat them easily with equal numbers, particularly bridge crossings. I then set up watchtowers and forts so I can see invaders and slow them down before they reach my defensive choke point, and then I hold the choke. Once they lose their invasion armies to the choke, it will take them many turns to replace those armies, so they're at their weakest without losing territories. At that point, I am at my maximum strength and I counter-invade. I pick off any place without strong garrisons and then I surround their largest remaining army in whatever fort or settlement and starve them out while they have no siege relief forces, assuming they lost most of their army in the invasion and the other, weaker provinces. I enslave to make sure my cities have enough population for building higher tier units, and then I just exterminate most of the time to maintain the public order at home (too many slaves / population causes public order issues) and in the captured settlement, which won't resist well after an extermination order. Then it's easy to win the war since it snowballs. More and more funds from conquering and sacking cities means more money for more troops. The war is basically over once their initial invasion of my territory fails, since they spent a lot of money making those armies and it takes time to replace them and create the funds needed to make even bigger armies. Meanwhile my counterattack only ever grows in strength, and it continues until I have found my next strong border to properly defend. The defensive war never ends, it only pauses. Diplomats maximize my income during the pauses. That's basically all diplomacy is, a means of making money from your neighbors between their attempts to backstab you, since they will never ever stop trying to backstab you. When viewed under such a lens, diplomacy has a use, an important use. But we must never pretend these agreements mean you're not constantly at war. The AI is incapable of actual peace, they're at their most peaceful when at war with a different neighbor that is going poorly, and your own border with them is defended well. That's as close as you ever get to a peace.

Why you don't enslave cities? It gives some extra trade resources and you get +0.5% growth in all connected cities. Also disperses population to your other settlements (that have less unrest). Also, when you have a unit on the walls, you can move around and take over the towers all around the city, so they don't fire on you and they fire on the enemies. You could have moved your Spartans to take the other gate that killed so much of your army when they went through.

@@nervosadustbolt9642 "Niki" is "Victory" but yes the 2 names have the same Greek root, it's the name of a Nymph of Greek Mythology "Nicae", for the pronunciation, what I gave you is the closest for an English speaker to pronounce, because the word is Latin, and therefore the sound "é" is more complicated to represent for the "Anglo-Saxon" people in writing.

For anyone reading this, I'm not sure the Thracian mercenaries and Mercenary peltasts are a great choice for any Roman players, but for most other factions, I'd recommend regularly using * Cretan archers * Rhodian slingers * Mercenary Peltasts * Bastarnae mercenaries Obviously the skirmisher missile troops are vulnerable to cavalry, but protect them from it like you're supposed to, and they'll do an excellent job. If you lack phalanx troops of your own, Mercenary hoplites are very useful, and are often good for the Greeks/Macedonians early on, as a better alternative to Milita hoplites. Regarding most non-Hellenic factions, I would also take these mercenaries for them as well. Romans won't really have a use for Mercenary peltasts, but if/when you're up against elephants, they do become useful. For non-Hellenic mercenaries, when not playing as the Romans, I would most often use * The mercenary javelinmen in Hispania (usually called Spanish mercenaries...?) * Mercenary war elephants * Numidian cavalry (mainly in Africa/southern Europe) * Baleric slingers * Sarmatian cavalry * Barbarian cavalry * Mercenary horse archers (mainly in NE Europe/Asia Minor)

Been a long time ago for me as well, last time I played was like a year after it released in CD. But I do remember it giving a bonus, think it was a hit to morale for the enemy. But I might be remembering it wrong. I always skipped night battles even though they gave a bonus and looked cool since the darkness made it more difficult do see what was happening and often ended up giving the AI the real bonus since the AI doesn’t rely on the old eyeballs to see what’s happening on the map.

Maybe this is a hot take, but I do wish they'd have redesigned the layout of towns/cities just slightly for siege battles. I adore this game, but the path finding down the narrow roads is borderline comedy and makes for some awful gameplay. Even just something as simple as widening all the streets by 50% or adding more plaza type open areas so every battle isn't restricted to an alleyway. And of course it could just be made an option in the campaign settings at the start of a campaign rather than a mandatory change so everybody is happy.

Really skirmish mode only works for mounted units anyway, sure a peltast could turn away and prevent a full on charge from cav, but then what, they are in melee and they die anyway so you’re saving yourself about 10 seconds!

Total War could rule all strategy, CA did. They took a series far into acclaim, there was nothing left to compete, strategy was theirs. But CA is dead. Their reputation is gone. And so we game in evil days. The PC gamers have turned on each other, instead of their proper rivals, those who envy all that CA has done. CA must weep, if the resigned weep. I will weep in their place, but i would also hope. Remasters yern. What was released, has released again. The outsourced still spin remakes published online. So perhaps now the market wishes CA to be great again. Perhaps a new entry will take up Total War, bring strategy where there is simplicity. Remake the series into better games. Perhaps..
