This is the sengoku period so that would be likely. During the Heion and a bit of the muromachi, samurai had one on one combat in battles. It then became a gang effort with 5 samurai or a samurai and his guards pinning down a guy to cut off his head mid fight.

It’s a custom battle, I set the AI side to ‘defensive’ they only usually send one unit at a time
