That’s a great job you’re doing, would you please send me the measurements of the molds,as i wanna try and build my own canoe,thank you
@JenkinsBoatWorks3 жыл бұрын
thank you for the nice words. the measurements are quite complex as there are about 19 stations it would be nearly impossible to accurately share all of it. My best advice is to get the book CanoeCraft. the measurements are one of I think six canoe plans in the book. You just have to loft the numbers onto graph paper. See my "Lofting Made Easy" video

If there is one thing shipwrights are good at it is finishing. The woodwork on some of the old, restored boats I have seen is far better than most furniture makers achieve. It does look good.

Thks for this video. What is the advantage to using this varnish instead of epoxy or epoxy with fiberglass? Thanks
@JenkinsBoatWorks2 жыл бұрын
It is varnish over the fiberglass and epoxy. The varnish protects the epoxy from ultraviolet
@frakafrocka2 жыл бұрын
@@JenkinsBoatWorks why not use an epoxy like West system or some other epoxy with built-in uv inhibitors? Then you would not need varnish correct?
@JenkinsBoatWorks2 жыл бұрын
I use West Systems on occasion and like it. I am not aware of any of their products that will stand up to UV. I’d love that sort of product especially for like paddles, spars. If you know of this specific epoxy please let me know. I like WS 207 slow hardener in part because of the lack of amine blush. The only other thing about epoxy is that it can be very difficult to get a super smooth, glass like finish and so even if it wasn’t for the UV protection, i get a superior finish with several coats of varnish

Thanks for the video . I have ordered this before I saw your video and was a little apprehensive about doing my own finish. Now I think I'll do fine. On the total boat site it mentioned thinning it with their #100 thinner on the first 3 coats as an option. I did order it but what does the thinner do ? Make it dry faster or/and level better?
@HighGear74453 жыл бұрын
Oh should have added I've made a 17' woodstrip kayak from western red cedar. A love/hate project as it's so time consuming.
@JenkinsBoatWorks3 жыл бұрын
Adding thinner might be good if you are going onto raw wood, but if going over fiberglass or epoxy, probably not necessary. The only other thing would be if your temperatures are very warm, like 80+. If the temps are higher than 85 or so, don’t even try. Wait for a cooler day

When do you use total wood sealer ?
@JenkinsBoatWorks3 жыл бұрын
Hi Karl, thanks for watching. In this project I sealed the wood with epoxy as I did the fiberglass work, for the most part. On my Haven 12 1/2 sailboat project, I actually used TotalBoat penetrating epoxy, like on the seats and decks. In hindsight, the wood sealer product might have worked as well but the fact is that I haven't actually tried the TotalBoat wood sealer. If you think it might be right for you but still have questions, I would recommend that you call the Jamestown Distributors Tech Team. They will talk to you for free, they are very knowledgeable and friendly. I think you can reach them at 1-800-497-0010

Chuck, it is coming out beautiful but you aught to start calling it a 17.1. The laminated stems are out of position by the thickness of the forms at both ends so your about 5/4 long overall. Sorry for being picky but I saw the frame 0 mark extending out beyond the strongback. It is still a great canoe.

Chuck could you have used a foam roller? Then tip it?
@JenkinsBoatWorks3 жыл бұрын
I considered that. I used foam when I did the two part paint on the Haven and it worked awesome. I now have three coats on and filled in some of my screw ups. I considered rubbing it on, too. I want to learn more about that
