The whistles of Cass are the best sounding of anywhere in the world. Can't say if it's the engineers, the mountains, the history, or a combination of all. It's amazing how much the place has changed for the better since I was a kid. More equipment operational, new track opening soon, and how well the spruce trees are returning to the mountain. And yet through all the changes the place has never lost its charm. I can't name any other RR where the crew is as friendly and doesn't mind visitors getting up close and personal with the equipment. Cass is genuine. Its history so deeply embedded that it never feels like some form of commercial enterprise. Rugged, the way it is supposed to be. I've been up the mountain in the rain a few times. Hearing a shay spin it's wheels on wet rail at a 13%grade is a nerve racking experience. Especially when you start sliding downhill.

I think dad and I could say we topped that. Try two Shays slipping on the run even before getting near to Bald Knob and sliding back down. They stopped to allow a Deer to get off the ROW and then had troubles getting started again. Took three tries to get moving on up the mountain. Fall of the year, dew on the track, and leaves on the rails make for slick conditions. But nothing beats the sound of those whistles in the mountains. Dave's train only had one Shay while normal runs back in the 70s- 90s up the mountain had two. But that was back before they relaid all the track and put down ballast.

@@gravelydon7072 Gosh that would be interesting! A Cass double header is a bucket list item, and I've heard they have been frequent this year since 6 is in the shop.

@@mattkinnard6899 Back then WM # 6 wasn't allowed up the mountain. Too much fear that it would roll the rails over. Along came a Hurricane and the flooding took out the line to Durbin that it was used on. So now Cass was isolated. The decision was made to relay the track up the mountain and make the re-connection at Old Spruce to the WM tracks. Which actually at one time were owned by the GC&ER RR which was owned by the lumber company. Now the track from Durbin to Cass should be usable again. So 604 might someday get to run on the old C&O mainline.

@@mattkinnard6899 That would be nice. It is sad they never ran the ex US Army 2-8-0 there as it came out of a base I also moved equipment out of. And all the ALCo MRS-1s that were stored there. If there hadn't been a wreck that required the special FRA flat, an MRS-1 would have been moved out of that base to the local museum. It could not move on its own wheels in interchange as it had hollow axles. And I sure wasn't going to walk it the 1200 miles to get it here. CSX would overlook a number of things for movements but the hollow axles were not one of them. And unlike the ones at Cass, it was built by EMD. Which would have meant I would have had to dig up another manual as mine was for an ALCo built MRS-1.

Nothing sings like a Shay!! And the way it echoes off the hills...😍 We've ridden behind these beauties several times, never gets old. I've been to Lima, and was disappointed that I couldn't really find anything related to the Shay works, just a sign. Thank you for giving me goosebumps with those whistle songs today!!

I must say that whistle is the most beautiful sound I could hear. I recorded it so I can play it tomorrow on the NCR Rail Trail. My wife and I have been doing walks on it and we will cross the Mason/Dixon Line. Along this historical railbed rode our 16th President to Gettysburg in November of 1863 and, sadly in 1865 on his funeral train. Along the rail bed are many cast iron whistle posts and I've always wanted to have a steam whistle recording to use as we passed them. I think I'll catch #1309's whistle and add it to my phone as well. I think it'll sound really cool if I ever ride a bike on the trail. Thanks for sharing your vacation with us.

There are others that i like also, the Reading Hooter (on 2102), would be tied with the Shay whistle in my book. Yes, it would be cool to see steam on the Cumberland, but a connecting line to the nearest major road would be necessary. My cat is curled up next to me, acting silly as well, i think he might be a little jealous, because my new lady friend takes care of a bunch of cats! 😾❗

I just learned this: our neighbor mine, Baily, was approached a few months ago by a UK broker who told Baily, UK would pay $600 a ton to have them ship coal over there. Baily went to their domestic customers and told them, they would actually pay the customers $50 a ton if they didn't buy it so they could ship the coal to UK!!! I haven't heard if any customers have agreed or not tho. We have a wood pellet manufacturer 4 miles from our house, their pellet inventory is the lowest going into a winter I have ever seen it. Seems like pellet stove owners are switching from coal to wood. We have had a wood pellet stove for over 20 years and while it doesn't put out the heat a coal stove does, it still does a decent job.

Also they are in the works of building a zero emissions electric generation power plant which will use coal fines in slurry ponds for fuel and pump emissions underground into storage areas in their mine. LOVE the train whistle! First time I've heard one like that. What my dad once said about trains, was you get speed or you get haul power. And for hills and haul, slow and steady wins it. 13º to 15º grade! There are 15 percent grades around here on our roads, but those are closed in the winter because they are so dangerous! I can't imagine a train going up something that steep! Awesome locomotives and rolling stock, thanks for taking us along Dave 😊

@@ccrx6700 From our house down to the bottom of the hill is a 11. Most are between 8 and 12, and 15 is the steepest I've seen in this area. When we drove through the mountains to South Carolina during the pandemic, we were amazed at how gradual the grades are. Some of the roads here have you feeling like your car is going to tip over backwards!

Looking forward to the rest of the vacation series! 1309 is quite the locomotive, was there for its first photo charter and then behind it for a fall leaf trip. So glad that it was finally restored after all the setbacks and delays, kudos to WMSR for sticking with it. As others have said, Cass is a place like no other, the sights, the sounds, the history. So lucky that it and the locomotives and rolling stock survives today. Unaware of the 13%-15% grades, I had heard 11% max, but it’s even steeper than I thought. And the pic of your son on the open top car was so awesome. We tried to ride that one when we’d take our many family trips to Cass when I was a kid kid, always such fond memories. Hopefully big 6 will return to the high rails next year, quite a size difference between it and the other shays. Cass also had the largest Shay that ever existed, it was the companion to big 6 (6 was built from its plans) and converted to a 4 truck Shay at Cass with Lima’s help (sadly scrapped in the 50’s). The milk car still has the tanks I believe and an idea was to use it for water for longer excursions, though the connector rail from Cass to Elkins is graded for diesels (though big 6 has been to Elkins for a photo charter). Moore Keppel climax #3 was the former Durbin rocket power, I believe it is under a tarp there along the siding. Hopefully it will be restored sometime too and Climax 9 and Climax 3 can be reunited.

Very nice video Dave. loved that whistle. A very close friend of mine chartered a caboose (I believe it was on the Case) that took them out somewhere on the line and dropped the caboose on a siding and picked them up the next day. He really enjoyed that trip.

I haven't been there in a while, but I've been going there since something like 1978 or so. Back in the early 2000's my dad and I took a car load of brass and bronze castings from Vandergrift PA down to Cass as they were rebuilding #9 Climax. Saved them a couple hundred in shipping costs, and got to ride up in the cab of #7 and #11 shay. It was a good day! I really need to make another trip now that they aren't land locked anymore!

I remember when I was a kid, my grandpa had some memorabilia from Cass, he had various train items and pictures. I always wanted to go there! I was born in Charleston and we lived near Gauley Bridge so I saw trains go right by our house, within a few feet actually, almost every day. Great videos ! Just subscribed!

I was in Cass just a few weeks ago. If you get the chance to go and haven't been take that chance it is absolutely stunning going up the mountain. And if you're worried about price being too much it's worth every single cent, without a doubt.

Hi Dave, Great video. But one small niggle. Lima made some magnificent large locomotives, including the NicklePlate berkshires and Wheeling articulateds. Those Berks used to run down the hill from my parents house in northern Ohio. Great memories. Thanks.

Awesome video! There is a Climax locomotive at Clark's Trading Post in NH. I went on the train ride there. Great ride, and even more so seeing the locomotive!

Cool! they are pretty neat engines commonsense. They had one here at nearby Durbin it was under steam when I visited but was just sitting there. These Shay's are incredible how they can climb a grade.

it is a beautiful sound Bill. A big part of the romanticism of steam was their whistle sounds. Cass is a wonderful ride, you would enjoy it. Worth every penny of admission price. if you want to go in the fall to see the leaves, book a year or so in advance, they sell out quick.. Next video out more of our Cass ride up some pretty steep grades. You will appreciate this: They stopped for water part way up on a 9% grade. I rode one similar in Kane PA. It crossed the highest wooden and metal rail road bridge in the country I was 12 y.o. but a tornado came through which was really rare in the mountains.....and blew it over.....now there is just a pile of twisted metal and wood and now they have a part of the bridge with a glass bottom you can walk out where the train used to go and stand on a glass floor and look 300 ft down it's really cool. Ty sir for bringing back such fond memories from my childhood. Ty so much

We visited the Kinzu bridge way back when I was a kid Michael, don't remember much about it other than standing on the end of the bridge. I sure don't think they had a glass floor back then, trip was probably in the early 1960's. Thanks for writing in and for watching the video today my friend.

When I was there I spotted some 1905 Cambria Iron Co 100RB rails at the main depot. Also saw some 1920s tie plates from Wheeling Steel & Weirton Steel.

what is unique you can tell who is sounding the whistle they have a unique hand in how they sound the whistle duration , and inflection between. when the CSX crews come in on site there are 2 grade crossings you can tell the difference between the crews, it is so neat hearing the difference. great video thanks for sharing

Love that whistle too Dave Thanks for showing the Shay close up details. I like how the drive shafts work on these with them having to power trucks that turn a really neat solution. I doubt I will get to see one in real but know a guy who builds logging layouts and he runs them at shows. Those cranks must of been really flying at 18mph bet that was a sight. In the war some locos were built for us by Lima and one is not far from where I am. It has that same whistle.

@@ccrx6700 If the Lima is running next time I go I will try and get some more if it. Here are a couple of bits showing it First at the end of the line. and the other when we visited the depot. If you watch the first one from the start ignore the warning at the beginning. KZbin got fine a huge amount over COPPA regulations and instead of sorting their mess blamed the video uploaders.
