Totally Underrated Backhand Hitch Knot

A really strong hitching knot that deserves to see the limelight. Great hitch as an anchor for tying down loads for transport. The backhand hitch utilizes a munter hitch (rock climbing friction hitch) in its construction which enables the hitch to double as a friction device.

I use it all the time. People always doubt it but after they see what it can do, they're amazed and ask me to show them how to tie it!! Amazing knot!! Great video.

A shortcoming of the Munter knot is the sharp bight which the line takes around the standing part. Such a bend concentrates tension across the outer surface of the line. Shock loads on the standing part are transferred through the highly compressed inner surface of the bight and onto the outer surface which may already have approached its elastic limit. This is where the knot will fail, especially in line whose radius is more than that of the post. There's also a tendency for chafe to develop at this point of contact, as loads on the standing part are not relieved until after they pass this point. The Tugboat hitch is simply several Munter hitches laid over the standing part from alternate sides. It too releases under tension, and is similarly weakest at the bights. But usually the post is large relative to the line, and the undesirable effects are also distributed among the bights.

It might be underrated in some countries, but in Poland it is the most popular mooring knot that is commonly taught and used by all sailors and simply known as “węzeł cumowniczy żeglarski” (sailor mooring knot).

The other side of the easy untieing is that you can easily adjust the load as you're tieing it, for example when hanging something on a rail, you can support the weight with one hand while you finish the knot.

I'll be using this to attach all sorts of things to a utility belt around the shoulder. I like how the friction hitch lets me set exactly how long the load line is, something I don't seem to get with a lot of other hitches.

Try a round turn then make that a backhand (munter) then secure it with a Highpoint Hitch (or Buntline Hitch) around the standing portion… Quick, secure, strong & easy to release if tied with slip…
@davidplatenkamp
@davidplatenkamp 7 жыл бұрын
This works very well, but one must take care to put the tail of the slipped part in the right place befor cinching down. One could also secure with a rolling hitch and not cinch down.

Can this be reliably tied in a bight? I’m searching for a secure knot to tie in the middle of a rope around an anchor point like a tree or pole (that also unties easily), and then one of the ends becomes the working end to tie off somewhere else, like with a trucker’s hitch. I’m finding my ropes or cord are usually too long for the task, but I don’t want to cut them to fit all the time. So I need a good knot to tie in the middle of a rope as that anchor point. Edit - I think I found what I need - just pass the working end around the anchor through a slip knot on one end, and then a trucker's hitch on the other end. I think thats solid enough for what I want to do (nothing commercial or life-dependent). It unties super easy too. I'm curious though what other people would use in the middle of a rope around an anchor point.

Hello, I am enjoying and learning from your instructional videos! I wonder if you can suggest a good climbing-strength rope with which I can learn these knots and have available for practical use? My own interests relate to knots used for tying down loads for hauling in a truck, for camping or for DIY home fitness equipment (so, able to secure loads of 200 lbs. or more). Thank you.

If you just want climbing rope to practice knotting ask a climbing gym for some. They will destroy their unsafe old ropes by cutting them up - these 2-3m lengths are perfect for practice

@JohnGreen_US

That's MULE. The Mule is a slip knot capturing side-by-side the load and working(braking) lines. The overhand is a safety backup to the mule. Maybe more secure.
