Very interesting. I face a bit of a paradox myself. I really like to look down at a thin top and leading edge on irons but aren't consistent enough to use blades. But tinkering is sort of fun, right. Gets us through the winter!!!! Thanks as always.😀

Amazing to hear about the thin line between uncomfortable and comfortable, I can imagine that the process can be challenging. The last fitting session I started with only swinging a clubhead with different shafts to determine the most favourable shafts, after that clubhead fitting and hitting loads of balls on the range. I felt completely wabbit. Loved the video, keep on grinding ! 🍀💪🐕

Another gem. I've been searching for some time now and I've come to realise that new isn't always better, especially in my uncomfortable area between driver and irons....a couple of older fairways and hybrids seem to have smoothed things over...hopefully😁

Hey Iona, I'm a big fan & follower of your career, loved your Ryder cup coverage and always look forward to your videos. Please bear with me and read till the end as my comment is more about your wrist injury than what's in your bag and it could be a game changer. I've been tempted quite a few times to relate my experience but now you have referenced how a shaft caused pain in your wrist, I think I can help. Background. I am 68, I have played in pro-ams and over 50's comps since 2005 as a scratch golfer both here and in Spain successfully. Unfortunately I developed type 2 diabetes in 2014 and ended up injecting insulin several times a day which made me put on 5 stone in weight, plus an old shoulder injury and a fall down concrete steps resulting in two broken knees ( Don't celebrate a win with cheap wine, lol ) took a toll on my game & then came covid. Covid actually saved my life !!. With nothing to do I researched diabetes and found the only way to reverse it was to go on the carnivore diet ( I only eat animal products ) and eliminate carbohydrates completely. My weight dropped from just over 20 stone to 14 over 18 months and my type 2 diabetes reversed stopping insulin injections which was huge , BUT THE BEST PART WHICH I DID NOT EXPECT ( This is my reason to comment ). All the pain & inflammation in both my shoulder & knees disappeared as soon as sugar (carbohydrates) was restricted.. Look up a Dr. Ken Berry on youtube, you will be amazed and should consider its benefits. Good luck with whats in the bag, I've recently replaced Cobra forged tech irons 2021, with my first set of tournament clubs from 2004 Callaway Big Bertha irons, don't go as far but are far more consistent. Best wishes for 2024.

Glad to hear I am not the only one in a bit of a flux this offseason. I want to change irons this year, but I did last year too, and the expense is a concern. I made a massive swing change, went to a stack and tilt very successfully, but am older, and want to go to need a lighter shaft now as I want to generate more speed with less effort.

Something else you may want to put into the pot - Head/swing weight. When I first injured my wrist, I switched to graphite, but retained steel head weight - I liked the extra help, particularly on the short irons. The shaft didn't feel quite right with graphite heads, adding a touch more weight - and changing the balance - just felt right. Even happier I did it as I taped up on the grips - helped balance a couple of extra layers, even with going MCC+4 Of course, you can try heavier with tape, but Mizuno, for instance, change head weights between steel and graphite, and also reduce if you go longer: 1/2" longer, they switch to B weight, 7G lighter - easy to order away from "Standard" weight. And I understand from forum posts, that head weights have generally dropped by about 6g over the last few years for a mid iron. So, if you are comparing older clubs with newer, see if they have retained the same swing weight..... And I'm thinking about it again now: In my swing room session yesterday, I played a few shots with a different club model for fun. Wasn't any better swing PATH, but it felt heaver. And I got another 5 yards from it. Same loft, AFAIK, possibly slightly shorter.

I know how you feel. I have recently just bit the bullet and started taking my favorite shafts with me into whatever new heads a buy. I know they work, I know they are perfectly balanced, and I know they are right for me. It just takes one factor of doubt out of the equation. I had been hesitant to do it since I liked having my old set of clubs intact so I could go back to them, but ultimately I found that if I am committing to the new irons, I need to commit by moving my favorite shaft over.

I'm working on this too. I went from 50g senior flex graphite shafts with big cavity back irons to the 2021 t200 and it had 95g steel amt reds and I didn't even realize but they were +1 above standard! Goodness! I pulled those shafts, and I put KBS TGI 60g regs on my T200s and I have made the graphite shafted club equal length to the published steel length by butt trimming .5 inch, thinking im short i need not play .5 above standard. No matter how big of a tip weight I put into the head/shaft, I cannot get passed a C6/C7 swing weight. Might have done myself a disservice there but im still playing these clubs with the 60g TGI shafts, and I'm just focusing on technique before I make more changes. I do feel like lighter is smart for me, in the end, but I have AMT reds on hand still and can always go back. Also been doing this myself in my guitar building shop, and it has been a fun journey to add clubmaking tools into my wood shop. 😊❤ Thank you for sharing your journey it is encouraging to know that even someone who plays so beautifully well as you, is looking to tune the set better.

This is so great! Not that you’re going through this process. I can understand the frustration of trying to dial in your setup. I’m just glad to hear that a player of your caliber also struggles to find your perfect setup. I went for a fitting last month and was fitted into the new T100’s. I also loved the T150’s and my dispersion was a bit better with them but the fitter liked the spin numbers with the T100’s. Still trying to pick which irons to order. I hope that you are able to get the shaft worked out, even if it means putting your old shafts into the new heads. Love your content! Looking forward to what you do in 2024!

Thanks for the video, Iona! It's somewhat comforting to me to know that even pros have some issues when they shake up the bag. I also like that 80-gram range for iron shafts. I don't know if you've ruled out steel because of the wrist, but I love the Nippon 850GH and the new 850GH Neo. There's also the Zelos 8, which is spot on for weight, but much, MUCH more flexible - like, whip city. I like the Recoil 780 ES and have that in my 5-iron, my longest iron. I tried the Dart at 75 grams, but it feels weird - not a flex thing, it's just got zero feel for me. Ditto the Steefiber. I just didn't get along with it. But Nelly seems to make them work ok! Good luck and can't wait to see the bag when complete. From what I've seen, you could get around in par with a broom and rake so I look forward to seeing you play more!

Hey Iona - I might have a shaft recommendation for you to try! Fujikura came out I think maybe two years ago with a graphite ‘axiom’ iron shaft - they come in a stiff at 75g which could be much closer in weight if that flex is roughly what you’d play. Also has Velocore tech in it from the drivers that are obviously flying off the shelves on tour. I think you might be based near to me and I know precision golf stock them in west byfleet - I’ve had lots fit by them and can vouch for the quality of fitting (TrackMan) and builds, I’m sure Simon would be happy to try and help you dial them in as an option! All the best!

@richardlashbrook9 ай бұрын
Hi Iona, Suggest you swap the shafts over from your T200s and move on. Langer has been using discontinued Hogan shafts forever. He just puts feelers out and picks up replacements where he can. That way, you are sorted (for now) until something better comes along - or doesn't.
@richardlashbrook9 ай бұрын
Shorter also equals stiffer and lighter - hence your misses to the right. Missing the sweet spot on T100s will also give more vibration and potentially hurt your wrist. Have you considered working with the T200s and getting the soles ground to your preferred turf interaction?

Hi iona, it's good to hear you are finding everything you don't want!! Hopefully it won't take too long to get what you need. I had a wedge issue a few years back. I had my set PW (45*), then vokeys at 48*, 52*, 56* and a 60*. During a gapping session I found I needed more in the top of my bag so went to 50*,54* and 58* much better but I still need to strike them better to get consistent distances. Good luck in finding the 80 gram shafts you need. I'd steal the ones from the other set.
@johngriffiths67429 ай бұрын
Hi Gary, as a purely weekend golfer (in fact, normally 1 round every couple of weeks) I have just the SW & PW. Would having multiple wedges improve my short game & worth investing in. Obviously I know its hard to comment without seeing me play, but did you find it helped your short game considerably?
@garyhague58829 ай бұрын
@@johngriffiths6742 hi John, if you look at your iron lofts you should find that there is 4-5 degrees between each ( about 15 yds). But between your PW and SW there will be 8-10 degrees(30 yds). I hit on average PW 115yds and SW 85yds so I have a GW for about 100 yds and a lob wedge for 60-70 yds. I also use the lob wedge around the greens and in bunkers sometimes. It all depends on how good you are at manipulating your PW and SW to cover all the distances from 50 yds up to PW distance.

I can’t tell you how many shafts, weights, grips, etc. I’ve experimented with. Even went to club fitters but something about the cameras, booth, observers that throw off my swing. I keep getting told to use regular flex shafts by the numbers, but I landed on stiff NS Pro shafts for my 9-6 irons and stiff Hzrdus Gen4 for driver and woods. It works… dependable, consistent and far when playing a round. Good luck!

I've just played with a friend in Tenerife with a rented half set of Taylor Made irons and woods. I had a pretty good round with 7 pars and a 2ft birdie on a par 3, which was nearly an ace 😳. Amazing, isn't it. Makes me wonder if I should change 💁💁💁💁

I replaced my 52 degree wedge with a 62 degree to adapt to the needs of my course, leaving a gap between the 56 and PW. I grip down the PW for the gap. So far it's OK but a work in progress. I also intend to replace my 4 iron with a, wait for it, 9 FW! The reason is that my course has a couple of par 4s with the green very elevated so with a long iron I can't flight it the way I need. Still a work in progress also because I can't find a 9 FW. I have a 7 FW which I also love, but believe it or not, also a 11 FW! The latter is lovely to hit but not quite long enough to do the work of a 9 FW.

i switch to a Sunday bag in the winter, but it's a different set of clubs. I don't get many chances to get out so I have a grab bag of my older clubs in the winter and play with my full set during the season.

Hi Iona, I just watched this again. A question with regard to irons, you mentioned you had a u500 4 iron with a steel shaft, different to all your iron options 😂Utility irons are driving me crazy. Can you let me know why your 4 iron is steel and would you recommend a lighter graphite in a utility iron or would you match the utility with the same steel NS Pro 95g shafts I have in my iron set 5-pw? I’m tall at 6 ft 4” and 7 irons carries around 150 yards. Thanks in advance

The old course jumper! I went into that shop chatted the the kiwi chap with a great mullet. But don't think I could pull off the jumper quite the same 😂

Irona seriously, you need to try the jumbomax jmx ultralite grips asap, do it in a fitting as it might change the shaft that suits you too. Your wrists will thank you and you might thank the process if they fit you with a shaft that hasn't been discontinued lol. Speak to Bryson 👌🏻

Iona, what you’re saying makes absolute sense. Quick question, on average how much do you think you’d spend ‘tinkering’ with your bag before perfecting it and when you do, how long before new technology makes you change?

Great questions, I’m going to do another video about this :)

You might want to try the Fujikura Ventus Red Graphite Shafts. Taylormade puts these in their Stealth irons and have for a couple of years now. I play the Ventus Blue in my Stealth Driver and fairways and they are choice. Titleist T100 is great but I would do KBS Tour 'S'.

Very nice little video, I'm going through this thought process myself atm. I bought myself the T100s a couple of years ago, as a present for working hard, but I'm wondering if they're too good for me... They're wonderful on the range and while having lessons but I'm having a hard time converting this behaviour to the course. And really wouldn't know where to start if I'm going to change from the steel shafts to anything else... Hmm, let's see, if I try a change it can only go to hell. So what, it's only a game, right? 😂

My gap is from my g10 5 wood to my g430 6 iron. I’ve tried hybrids but can’t settle with them. I got a 2004 Big Bertha 7 wood to try it out and it seems to be the right fit for my spacing. I’m very tempted to upgrade to either a Stealth 2 or g430 7 wood with a regular shaft . Any advice from the community out there?

I've just switched from those exact t200's to a combo of t150s and t200s. Short irons seem to be going a bit left, but got a lesson soon so hopefully ill figure out what I'm doing wrong there.

Fujikura axiom 75 will be a perfect fit. Amazing and stable. You will love them. Please try

I am desperately bad at tinkering with my club set up and the magpie in me is drawn to every new shiny product that comes out. Although my bag looks amazing and I could give any professional golfer a run for their money standing on the first tee, I’m a inconsistent 22 handicapper who with the best club fitting session in the world wouldn’t see much change in their game. I’ve finally decided to that maybe just maybe a few lessons might be the way to go! I’m only one lesson in but I can already see an improvement and hopefully after a few months I will start to see more consistency in my game and could start to seriously look at building a bag around what then be ‘just the one swing’.

I have a similar issue. I feel I require a different set up on my driver. A heavier weight in my putter and missing a club between my 5 iron and 5 wood. Off to my PGA Pro for advice.

Love how you have tried to find am updated version of the 80... though if it was me I'd try and pull a set or surely recoil have some in stock?! I still use kbs tour and it works so I'm not fussed about looking for something else.

I’m on the same journey! Same height as you, moving to T100s from T200. Went 2* flat, and searching for the right graphite shaft - Mitsubishi MMT, Fujikura Axiom, etc.

I enjoy these review clips just as much as you Chasing the Red… it would be madness to put your wrist in danger so keep going… It is interesting to hear your thought process. Oh and enjoy Panama!!

Iona, traditional length of men’s clubs stems back to when the average height for a man was 5ft 8-9ins, so length of your standard shafts should be fine
