Fun fact The tram lines in Sydney and Brisbane are mostly still there, they were just paved over. I worked on the new Gorge st line and we cut through the buried lines a few times while cutting trenches for services.

What people failed to realise is that cars need to be parked. Narrow streets meant that trams occupied road space but parked cars occupy MORE road space. Leading to a great increase in congestion. All very well when only the rich had cars but once everyone had cars this unforeseen problem meant that the promise of car travel became a lie.

I think one or two trams from Australia now are at MOTAT museum in Auckland and still run at times, one is a Kitson steam tram, would be good on a Cold winters day, toasty warm with the boiler nearby.

I couldn't agree more. The contribution they made to keeping Sydney's air clean is unestimable. And so much more efficient and cheaper than diesel.

Unfortunately the power used by the trams was mostly generated at Ultimo power station and abit later White Bay both close to the Sydney CBD and belching out lots of smoke from their early technology boilers. Once the trains where electrified even more locally generated electricity with its accompanying smoke .

Restore the trams to Ashfield,Bronte and La Perouse.Have a tram festival and give the enviroment a chance.I rode the last tram in 1961,what a thrill,but sad.

Yes well, with a bit of luck, the new Metro will do the job. Gold Coast is due to start soon and Adelaide is expanding. Let's hope Brisbane and Perth follow suit.
