While the NFL has this perception that it is nothing more than a brutish and sort of modern gladiator league-there is actually a surprising amount of nuance and strategy that goes into playing the game.
Not just from a strategy perspective, but also staying within the confines of its intricate and extensive rule book.
Let’s take a look at 10 of the NFL’s most obscure rules that I’d bet you didn’t even know existed!

While it is a 1-point (defensive) safety, it's not the interesting one as it ultimately results in a 7th point to go with the touchdown. Making the PAT kick has the same result. What is described in this video, as well as Jon Bois in the Scorigami video, is something so much harder to accomplish, the 1 point offensive safety.

@@bobbob465 Yes, you are right. As far as I know that has never happened in college or the NFL. A more likely way it could happen than the way he describes is, blocked PAT, defense picks it up and returns it but fumbles in the field of play. Offense picks it up, retreats into the end zone, and is tackled there.

The answer to your question at 3:00 about drop kicks is that it was a lot more useful before the NFL banned kicks beyond the line of scrimmage. The CFL, like rugby, allows a kick at any time, so a player in the open field could try a drop kick for points rather than attempt to beat a defender.

A sideline player once did come on the field to tackle an opposing player. Happened in a college game back in the '50's - Alabama vs Rice 1954 Cotton Bowl. A Rice player was running for a long touchdown when a 'Bama player came off the sideline to tackle him. The Rice player was rightfully awarded a touchdown. Also, a 1-point safety has also happened in at least 2 college football games.

I doubt they'll remove the rule.

I think the benefit to the drop kick used to be that you could try it at any point during a play from anywhere on the field, similar rugby. Not sure why they took that part out but left in that you could still do a drop kick during a scrimmage kick.
@Terrell070
@Terrell070 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnsilcox8 I don't know why they took out the open-field kick in American Football either. In the distant past kickers weren't specialists, so I don't think it's the kickers. It's still allowed in Canadian Football. Canadian Football also has a larger field & requires that kicks into the end zone be returned beyond the receiving team's goal line, or the kicking team gets a rouge (1 point). Doesn't sound like much but it could mean that that last drive needs to end in a touchdown rather than being able win or force OT with a field goal.

The Packers also tried the free kick in a game against the Lions in 2008, after getting the ball on a fair catch with one second left in the half, almost made a 69-yard attempt (would've been good from 67, possibly 68). It's definitely not going to come up much, but I'm a little surprised we don't see it at least occasionally -- you'd think a team with a reliable kicker would at least be aware of the rule and have a plan for this just in case they end up in that situation.

With regards to drop kicks, I actually think it would make sense if your kicker gets hurt. If a kicker gets hurt and can't return to the game, what are your options? 1) try to find someone on your team who used to be a kicker? 2) hope that you have a backup kicker who's active that day? 3) attempt 2 point conversions each time, and get screwed if you miss one or two? I think it makes much more sense to train a punter to be good at drop kicks just in case the kicker gets injured, than risk missing every PAT/2pt attempt.

That fair catch kick could be a feasible strategy for the team with a superb kicker amongst two who both have top 2 defenses but piss poor offenses. Occasionally, those games can have a total score of less than 20 points. A field goal or two could be the difference if the kick is timed properly enough to not tire out your defense too much or too early. There have been 6 successful fair catch kicks made in NFL history, the last by Ray Wersching (Chargers) in 1976 from 45 yards. Since then, there have been 9 attempts, and only Rob Bironas in 2005 (58) was from within 60 yards. Mark Mosley attempted at 74 yard FCK in 1979. Not uncommon...just uncommon for them to actually *work*. I've seen illegal leverage called a few times; the rest of the stuff is either in response to/to prevent abusive acts...the "no consecutive timeouts" rule was because of how stupid icing the kicker got in the early 2000s. Joe Gibbs was just the only coach stupid enough to not remember it existed. Drop kicks exist because reasons (and maybe make them worth 2/6 points if attempted as a conversion attempt/down play), but EVERYONE knows the Doug Flutie play. Palpably unfair acts are for interfering with a scoring opportunity (Mike Tomlin) or repeatedly committing penalties to manipulate the clock (The infamous Ravens vs. Bengals "everyone hold until the clock runs out" play happened the year before that was added).

The drop kick does not "date back to a prehistoric version of gridiron football." The drop kick in the open field (beyond the line of scrimmage) is still legal in the Canadian game, so it relates to a current version of "gridiron football". If you want to refer to a "prehistoric version of American football", i.e. before they made the lame decision to ban kicks past the line of scrimmage, go ahead.

Drop kicks can be good.. If u r like 3rd and 25 or more.. The qb can kick it so its beyond any receiver.. Really long punt

That’s not the only way a 1 point safety can be scored. It can also be a blocked kick or interception recovered by the defense and then brought back into the end zone. The offense scores 1 point. It’s less hilarious because it just amounts to the same as if they made the PAT to begin with.

Eliminate the 15-yard PAT and line up at the 3 for either a drop kick or 2-pt conversion. And yes, I know the 2-pt conversion is currently from the 2 yd line.

"half the distance" penalties; specifically, when there is insufficient yardage for the full penalty. They should just assess as much yardage as they can and put the ball on the one. Half the distance only makes sense when the distance to the goal line is greater than 20 yards -- if the whole point of a "half the distance" penalty is to send a message, such as an extreme player safety violation. Helmet-to-helmet targeting would be a great half the distance penalty.

It appears that the defense did not rush the drop kick, and nobody blocked. If you have a kicker, you don't have to worry about a bad snap or blocked kick.

I can see a reason to not accept the ball after a score and kick it back to the other team. Say it was late in a game, you were up by maybe 3 scores and you were short offensive players due to a mix of injuries and possibly something like Covid. It might be more beneficial to just kick it deep and give your defense 75 yards to defend rather than risk practice squad players screwing around and risking a punt block or random fumble.

Drop kicks allow a player to kick a field goal when, say his holder fumbles the ball, or when a successful pass or run is impossible. Yeah, hasn't happened, ever.

I'm a little confused, is the 1 point safety different between NFL and college football? He described it a little different than I thought the college rule was. I always thought it was cool though that the same announcer called two of these plays
@RoyalMela

Both teams can get 1 point safety. Kicking teams has been awarded 1 point twice, but never for the defensive team. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKGXhZiGadeqZtU Here the kicking team is awarded a safety. To get defensive team scoring a safety the ball would have to travel all the way to the other end, kicking team player getting the ball into possession in the field of play and then going into own end zone and getting tackled there. Or somehow muffing the ball out of the end zone. That would take the ball 90 yards backwards.

You’re wrong on the one-point safety. The two times I’ve seen it which were both in college games, the try was blocked and the defense came out of the end zone went back in and was tackled for a safety
@johnsilcox8
@johnsilcox8 2 жыл бұрын
I think he was saying there's two versions of a one point safety. The type you are referring to which has happened in college, but also one where the kicking team would have to lose 90 yards and someone get tackled in their endzone. Which also means it is theoretically possible for a team to score just a single point in a football game.

Another crazy rule (even though it is known) is the out of bounds goal line fumble rule. Meaning if you fumble out of bounds and its in the endzone the other team gets the ball and its a touchback.
@RoyalMela
@RoyalMela 3 жыл бұрын
It is a good rule. Take care of the football or risk losing it. And this also makes it very risky to try and fumble the ball into endzone for an easy touchdown.

the NFL rule i hate the most, (though it does make a kind of sense) is if the ball goes out of bounds in the endzone that scores a TD it's automatically a touchback for the defense.
