I realize the hubris of youth and peer pressure makes it seem like you should wearing short because everyone else is doing it....but at 35f....wearing tights, long sleeve shirt, hat and gloves will give you an advantage, it's basic thermodynamics, your body will spend less energy heating itself and more energy running.
@cameronausenАй бұрын
I saw a lot of hats and gloves on the course afterward that athletes had tossed. 35 degrees really does not seem that cold when you are running at full throttle for a 6k or 10k race (especially when there is virtually no wind like today or if you are from parts of the country that have cooler falls).
@davidhofmayer1031Ай бұрын
@@cameronausenyep - you can also see Musau ditched his gloves before making a big push. I used to do the rowing machine shirtless in freezing weather with steam coming off me. Yes, your skin is cold, but your core is a furnace when you’re working like that

In addition, BYU oiled up to provide some thermal protection which apparently must not hurt. But, yes I agree - when I run in these temperatures, I would be wearing some layers.
@HunterThinkerАй бұрын
@@Kimmer I actually did some basic calcs on this scenario on chatgpt, and it recommended arm sleeves, calf sleeves, and gloves + hat (discard if overheat). The winner graham had gloves and in his post race interview said of his performance "it hurt". Probably would have hurt 5-20% less with thermal efficiency ;-)

Why ?
@dpridАй бұрын
@@davidfriedfeld Because it goes back to a time when the governing bodies of athletics thought they had to protect women in case their wombs fell out. OK, I'm paraphrasing, but that was basically the reason. When I started running XC in the early 2000s a lady called Paula Fudge used to run for one of the other teams. Paula set the first recognised women's 5000m world record back in 1981, because prior to that women were not allowed to run that distance competitively. The world has moved on, women can now run whatever distances they want, and excel especially at ultra distances, but XC still seems to be stuck in the old days.
