I had the fastest Soapbox this year in London's redbull soapbox race (2Fast2BFurious), Nice work! hopefully see you in London 2021 (or cork 2020 maybe?) 😉

Absolutely Fantastic. Thank you so much for commenting. Just been watching your run. Two questions . a) What wheels are those? They look a bit like Motor Scooter wheels?. b) that last landing looks savage. Did the non cosmetic elements of your cart survive completely unscathed? My biggest challenge is time (too many projects😁) I intend to reduce the track width on mine now as i built it originally with a mind to competing in the very fast scottish road based events where high cornering speed was the decider but now im more minded to go down the 'red bull' and charity events route. And they tend not to favour broad vehicles. A pleasure to hear from you John

@@ToTheGarage The wheels are 12" moped, but the biggest challenge with red bull soapbox is the weight limit : 80kg max . The wheels top the scales at 12kg a corner. the steering wheel took a pounding but everything chassis wise is ready to roll again I'm with you know the too many projects problem, and all jumps are savage I had concussion but totally worth it , if I can help any more please shout 😉

Nice video! I was really wondering if someone had put some proper engineering into a soapbox racer (especially the suspension which seems to be the problem most of the times) and after some research I found what I was looking for in this video! Really enjoyed it, I’d love to see some more.

Wow, beats the hell out of my soapbox which only just did not kill me, we lived on a hill & fortunately much less traffic about. You certainly are a clever "old" bugger, to hell with the cladding, love the Brummy engineering. You can take the Man out of Birmingham but you cannot take Birmingham out of the Man.

Kart looks great! I have a couple of questions i was hoping you could help with. Do you have a link to the bearings you used? Did you modify the hub? What diameter axle is it?

Hi Matt. thank you👍. Im working away from home right now and my memory is not good enough for precise answers, but here we go I have a couple of spare bearings and will find out the size and code for you when im at home. The hub is standard but I removed the standard bearing cups to make space for the bearings. I think they are 12mm Axles. Which I know sounds thin for a single sided application but they are Plain shanked Unbrako branded socket headed (Allen key) Bolts which are Very tough and Very hard. The wheel will let go long before they do. Are you thinking of building something similar

No problem and thanks for replying. I am in the process of making a gravity racer. We did our first test sunday and our axle failed on the front wheels! So im looking to upgrade the axles. How easy was it to knock out the existing cups from the hub?

@@MATTDOESSTUFF2020 Super easy. Screwdriver through middle on one side to knock out the cup on the other side.

Impressive! I built a 4-wheel pedal/electric bike with my kids out of PVC, much less sophisticated than this. I found steering geometry to be quite a science and you have executed quite well. For what it’s worth I have 2 tips. First, I am concerned that your steering column looks like a solid steel rod. I suggest some sort of collapsible or telescoping solution would salve your life in the event of a crash. (I’m serious) Second, when rounding corners at speed we found that having the sides high enough (and padded) to allow your shoulder to take your weight improved our ability to maintain control better because we didn’t need to exert ourselves just to stay centered. Good luck!

Top tips Tom. and you are right in both regards. I will act on both points👍
