The musicianship is just breathtaking. Love when Steve walks over to Simon at 4.16 because he needs more from Simon at the end of his solo and then Simon just goes crazy and delivers like the God he is. Just beautiful. Music at its very best.

In the intro, Luke says "here's one we haven't played in a long, long time".......Why???? This tune absolutely smokes! They should play it at EVERY show...

I don’t know why the Turn Back album didn’t do better . It is one of my favorite Toto albums . Finding a copy on cd a few years back while in Indiana ( actually the store transferred it to their location so I could get it ) was a good day . A real rocker . As if they aren’t all .
@marckhachfe12383 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Me too. Certainly my most played Toto cd growing up. And this song is the best on the album
@gizmoitus2 жыл бұрын
It didn't do well because the engineering and mix were not great. The album just doesn't compare to either of the 1st 2 or 4. Sonically those albums are incredible and this one isn't. The sound of the guitars on this record, especially the solos are downright terrible in places. With that said, I do love this song.
@bobkemp5882 Жыл бұрын
@@gizmoitus - Not only that, but the guys admittedly went slightly more in a "prog" direction -- I LOVE the album, but CBS I'm guessing couldn't find a "hit' to promote from it.

Stunning to think that this was just a bit more than a 2 decades ago, and Bobby was still singing like that. Bobby simply never got the recognition he deserves as one of the greatest rock/r&b vocalists in history. Guy was 56 years old at the time, and still hitting notes few guys in their prime could hit.

@gizmoitus2 жыл бұрын
The sonic quality and mix of Turn Back is just weird. The guitar solo is so muddy on the record, you can't even tell it's one of the best guitar players in the world playing it. Apparently the band really liked the record but it did so poorly that the record company told the they needed a hit or they would be dropped. And then they delivered Toto IV ;) This is also the only early album where the CD sounded so bad, they had to remaster it in 2018 for their "All In" box set. What really stands out to me hearing them do this live, is how good they all sing together, and those vocals aren't just studio trickery and overdubs.
@CoTeCiOtm2 жыл бұрын
@@gizmoitus actually, a lot of the background vocals are indeed overdubs. It's really well masked in this, but it's far more noticeable on soundboard audio sources from the 2003/2004 tour, since the harmonies sound so overly produced compared to the rest of the instruments and vocals. In this concert, it's pretty evident on Africa, you can tell David Paich is singing for real when he starts singing "I blessed the rains down in Africa", his voice sounds completely different to everyone else. Then later on the started autotuning the hell out of the vocals, starting from the Falling in Between tour, which is a HUGE pity, since these people can actually sing.
@liamvandeseijp6901 Жыл бұрын
@@CoTeCiOtmi think the background vocals are done by Tony Spinner on the backup guitar, he’s actually a very talented singer too. But the Africa chorus was definitely overdubbed
@Kritikateur Жыл бұрын
Man.....Luke plays the exact riffs as he did back then in studio, apart in this live ending which he plays unbelievable stuff not played on that record. The reason why you all think the guitars in this song sounds muffled, it's simply because Steve used a famous (in those days) Roland GTR Synth. I think was The Roland GR 500 module all through out Turn Back. I was 17 when that album came out and I still remember that to me in those days, those guitars sounded awesome, but then again, what was experimental in the past, doesn't match anymore with today's standards. Someone call it "progress". C.A.🤔

Mark Cartel Agree his tone is awesome here He is using the neck pickup, but on that particular guitar thats a fernandes sustainer pickup, and he is probably using his dirty rhythm channel . He used all this rack gear during this period, but nowadays he is just using a straightforward setup with a couple of bogner amps and a few pedals

the problem with toto LV is the conflict between emotion/expression and vocal condition. joseph sings very well, but he never risks to get out of tone or make his style a bit crazy. he also use to act like a gay during the show. bobby has some huge voice problems, but he always sang like his own life depended on it, he used to be an emotional god onstage, a real frontman. i prefer him much more than JW.
