I have loved this song since I was an adolescent and it came out! I looked up the meaning/what inspired the song, something about teenage love and trying to figure it out. But today it hit me (as good music does) with a personal meaning. Like a battlefield, long-term married love faces enemies, personal doubts, and some painful losses at times. Great victory only comes to those in healthy relationships who Hold the Line and keep fighting for each other. Good stuff is ahead, don't give up.
