TOTO - Rosanna (Guitar Cover)

If you've followed my channel for a while, you'll know that I'm a big fan of the Joseph Williams era, and also love Isolation, and want to mainly focus on learning those albums. But I cannot start delving into such 'deep cuts' without touching something from the masterpiece that is TOTO IV. My favourite from the album is I think Make Believe, but Waiting for Your Love is a killer groove and I like It's a Feeling and Good For You also. Rosanna has been requested and is naturally the one to start with and may just be THE best song to represent the band and Luke's work.
Years and years ago I watched the Steve Lukather star licks video and spent a long long time learning this solo. However, Luke plays it slightly different there to what's on the record (the isolated guitar tracks are available these days on KZbin). This isn't too surprising as Luke seems to be more of a 'in the moment' player and may play it different every time, but I had to relearn some pretty ingrained muscle memory, but it was fun to do. The end solo is also incredibly tricky and I think I know exactly what Luke plays, however, trying to play it up to speed at the end of a full take is something I think only a prime Lukather can do haha.

I use a Jackson DK2 Dinky from 2004 (I removed the tone pot and moved the volume over) into a Boss Me50 (where I get my tone) into a Palmer Pdi-09 (which simulated a mic'd up cab) into a Focusrite Scarlett into my computer running Logic Pro X (where I add a little EQ and Reverb).

Lukather is definitely a guitar god but it’s exponentially easier to be that great when you have a Jeff Porcaro pocket like this to play in. If having a kick ass shuffle like that doesn’t bring the best out of everyone then what would!! The isolated drum track for this song is absolutely insane. The ghost notes and every little nuance in Jeff’s percussion work in this song are incredible. Until you hear it by itself, you have no clue just how busy he was in this song. Damn shame he died so young!

something I really like about watching your covers is your emphasis on stylistics, technique, and tone, without the Guitar Hero swagger and arrogant stage posturing. Hi Ben. Your guitar licks just get better with every clip! It seems so effortless whether it be chord changes or into lead breaks and that guitar tone is perfect. Is there any “Everest Track” that you have tried to climb that still catches you out, so you haven’t yet posted it here? I think you could play anything in your sleep! Not sleep walking, sleep shredding! Another great posting. Toto have some superb arrangements. I was lucky to see Steve L play with Ringo’s All Star Band in Auckland NZ about 10 years ago and they played some Toto then. Brilliant guitarist. He also has a nice YT concert with Larry Carlton, another favourite of mine and someone who Steve greatly admires. Have you ever listened to Larry’s “Last Nite” electric blues guitar instrumental album (also uploaded to YT)? Superb feel on the notes. I saw Larry in Auckland, too, about 8 years ago. A maestro.
