TOTO - Rosanna ISOLATED TRACKS

Listen to this radio broadcast - where they isolate all tracks from TOTO's Rosanna - as you never heard before!!!
This million-selling Gold-certified hit single "Rosanna" - written by David Paich - was the opening track and the first single from their 1982 album Toto IV. Rosanna won the Record of the Year Grammy Award in the 1983 presentations and was also nominated for the Song of the Year award.
In musician circles, the song is known for its highly influential namesake half-time shuffle, as well as the ending guitar solo played by guitarist Steve Lukather.
The drum pattern is known as a "half-time shuffle", and shows "definite jazz influence". Featuring ghost notes and derived from the combination of what Jeff Porcaro called the "Bernard Purdie half-time shuffle" (Purdie shuffle) as well as the variation thereof John Bonham played on "Fool in the Rain" with the well-known Bo Diddley beat.
Our brother Mike Porcaro appears in this video, as original Toto bass player David Hungate left before the video was made.

Nearly had a physical reaction over that omission. It's all great, and that drum beat changed the way drums are played, but that keyboard solo is the climax of the song. Everything...everything...leads up to it. Oh well...Never overestimate the general public.

Porcaro kills that groove on the kit so beautifully, those ghost notes on the snare alone are executed perfectly with such insanely precise dynamics! Jeff's playing was always light years beyond anyone else's ability....and so smooth. Smoother than Extra Super Creamy Peanut Butter! The song is amazing for being the typical 80's type of Top 40 Pop tune. None of the bands that are around today could ever create a masterpiece song like Rosanna!? Not even with all that digitally enhancing Pro-Tools with auto-tuned, pitch-corrected, quantized, drum machine sampling bullsh*t! These are real musicians with real talent playing real musical instruments. No studio magic needed right here, just pure skill!

I truly believe that the more isolated tracks we all hear, the current music " business " situation ( artists not getting paid, digital download fever, etc. . ) could actually recover and restore glory to many, if not most, musician and composers. Think about it: To discover the inner magic of a piece of music is a whole other universe to explore, especially for us mere mortals. After hearing this, I immediately went back and listened to the entire Toto IV disc. Just amazingly magical!

I guess you're absolutely right David. I have listened to this album hundreds of times on CD and vinyl, but discovered even more beautiful details in these isolated tracks. All the tracks are brilliant. That's what's TOTO all about. Not a cheap and plain 4/4 measure with only three major chords like 90% of the present pop music, but those brilliant little details on a hi-hat, a bass grooveline, subtile guitarlick, and so on....sometimes simple and most of the time insufferable difficult; but always brilliant. All those (often very little) details can be heard (better) in these isolated tracks. The vocal harmonies for example. I can't get enough of this stuff. I can listen this every day, over and over again.

After reading hundreds of reactions below this video I decided it's about time to make a statement here. No defense, no offense and nothing personal either. Just MY opinion (for what it's worth) without the smallest intention to insult anyone. I posted this clip because I LIKE IT and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one as I see the number of views and likes. Sure some people will discover some incorrect facts in the comment of the radio hosts just as I did, BUT....come on! Nobody has been injured! Feel free to deliver your correction in a comment, but without name calling and with your RESPECT please. Since I published this vid I removed so much negative comments with f**k words and bad insults personally addressed to the radio hosts. Just because a couple of wrong facts or because they had not all the time in the world to pay attention to all solo's and complete tracks per instrument? Or maybe it's just because they express their excitement about Toto and their supreme skills? Please keep in mind that it's their job to open up their mouth and know 'bout the existence of automated non-stop stations. Radio hosts neither give on air 'note for note' music lessons. Let's feed & feel the positive vibe for once and be all grateful that this radio station take 15 minutes of their airplay for TOTO! If they ask you to take this song apart and tell them how to play it - then they're not even CLOSE to "ready for this kind of stuff". Keep practicing kids, you'll get there. In 20 years time or so. That's the way it works for most people anyway. I am soooo jealous of what you were able to do there Jimmy. I'd LOVE to be able to sit at a mixing console and tear this song apart track by track. Not to figure out how it's played. Jeff's video taught me his half time shuffle long ago on his videos and I nail it. But THANK YOU for posting this video here to KZbin. But that "meet you all the way" harmony is just crazy. It's much more complex than I thought. Also the horn harmonies are crazier than it seems.

Ever since I first listened to this video, I have listened to this awesome tune from a completely different perspective. Absolutely loving your posts. I had no idea a) how much was going on in TOTO's songs, and now b) how much TOTO's band members had influence over the best music of the 1980s. It's making me feel a mix of emotions, mostly a feeling of loss that today's world isn't set up in such a way that music like this would be heard on the radio, let alone produced. I hope posts like this encourage a new generation to put their all into music.

I'm pretty sure that keyboard track was Paich and Steve Porcaro combined. It had organ and piano in it; Paich played most of the "organic" keys.
