How to remove a Touareg shifter knob

I disassembled the shifter and was trying to put it back together - the tip about pulling the button out saved me - thank you; I needed to see it confirmed that that was the correct procedure as there seemed to be an issue with mine and it was not easy to get it to pull the arm far enough back for assembly. Much appreciated.

Great instructional video. I'm hoping you can help me out of a jam. I've just bought an 04 V8 that among other things had the shifter handle removed. Today I worked out why - the eyelet at the top of the shifter rod is broken. Do I have to replace the complete assembly? How is that done? I can't find any advice anywhere....

Yes first wrap a piece of tape around the button with it pulled out to keep it from pulling back in, also now that I see that hole it's more likely to put some sort of pin in it instead of taping the button to prevent it from going back in.

Does all of that gubbings come out from the interior? My V10 is coming out for various reasons but I have a problem with my shifter the button sticks in and I'm having to yank that white bit up manually.

How do you pull out the whole gear shifter?

but how do you take the whole thing out, i have a problem with the white rod that its not pulling back when pulling up and i dont know what to do. i think i need to replace the unit your holding but how do i get it off?

how come your round button stays out without holding ? does your spring is working to pull it in ?
