I didn't know toucans purr...Zeema sounded just like a cat! It was fun to watch her investigate each toy, and interesting to see her reactions, especially with your explanations, Jessie. I won't get to see Zeema in person, so this was the next best thing to being at a live presentation...thank you!🥰🥰

I’ve known several blind rats, both rats born without one or both eyes, or rats that are blind due to cataracts. They adapt very well to it in the main, since ratties don’t use their eyes that much in general.

@@catzkeet4860 Yep he has no problems at all navigating a 3 story cage or interacting with his brothers. He's a little clumsy sometimes but tbh i think he would be even with eyesight lol. The only difference there is when interacting with him is that I make more noises like snaps or scratches to get his attention

understanding Zeema's behaviour is interesting because her eyes are so far on the sides of her face. It looks to me like she's turning away from something, but actually she's turning her eye /towards/ it so she can look at it better.

Zeema with the stuffie: "Why. Won't. It. Leave?!" I love that purring sort of sound. I had no idea that toucans made that noise. I also really like that you addressed how eliciting a territorial response isn't totally a bad thing. As far as Zeema is concerned, she successfully defended her territory from both intruding toucans. Maybe it gave her a little confidence boost.

I think that Zeema having the territorial response was fine because you removed the offending toucan. It would be different had you left it there which would have unnecessarily stressed her out but this way she can think that she scared off the intruder just like she intended and it gave her something new! Yes it was stressful, but new things often are. The main thing is that it wasn’t a sustained stressor. I also wondered Jessi, if you’d seen the information that Jamie from Birdtricks recently posted regarding the passing of Rocco, her toucan, and the dietary implications. I dont think Zeema is the same type of toucan as Rocco, but we’d all hate to see anything happen to her.

6:18 was that poop from the blueberries that you just fed it? Or was it from an earlier meal? If it's from the food that you just fed, their digestion seems very fast!

We have mats to cover the whole floor, they were just soaking a little longer to get all the poo off and Zeema was ready to get back out to play. So, I stopped cleaning for a bit and made the video with her before putting all the mats back in.

4:22 Does that count as training her to be aggressive like training a pit-bull for dog-fighting? 🤔 Jessie said they naturally react to territorial-disputes, but this isn't the wild, and I've seen other channels with multiple pet toucans cohabitating in a home. I'm not sure about the thing about triggering the occasional reaction because it's natural; does that mean people who's birds get along are doing a bad thing? Would that apply to other kinds of pets? 🤔 Does Zeema get any interaction with other animals?
@ntcssj2 жыл бұрын
Many animals "play fight" eachother so the first toy could just be that for Zeema? As with the second toy, that one she was more negatively territorial about and Jessie explained more about that near the end. :) So many animals are territorial and animals often need species specific protocol for introductions/cohabitation. Thinking about if you were surprised by an unknown stranger inside your house without warning, you would probably react instinctively, fight or flight mode kicking in compared to if that same person knocked, introduced themselves to you, and maybe explained why they were there (like a repair person or something).
@DonnaBrooks Жыл бұрын
Well, in this case, Jessie had no idea how the toucan would react to a flat, painted toucan (as opposed to the more "life-like" 3D stuffed animal). Z could have just been curious about it or ignored it. J immediately removed the offending toy. I know nothing about toucan behavior, but if some toucans get alone living together, and don't exhibit stress behaviors, then what's the problem? It's like when they introduce new live animals to an enclosure. Sometimes animals get along. Sometimes they don't. It's all trial and error. Wild animals have personalities, just as humans or our pets do. Some are more aggressive than others. Some are timid. Some like human interaction while others want to be left alone. Age, health, the amount of space they have, etc. can all be factors in behavior. WTF are you even talking about saying, "training her to be aggressive" and comparing it with the abuse of dogs? Z wasn't being "TRAINED" at all! She was introduced to something new. She had a hostile reaction to it and it was immediately removed. How you equate that with abusing dogs by making them fight each other for human entertainment is beyond me.
