This might sound weird but my favorite part of a toucan is the paddle-shaped tail! Hers is looking so much better. I saw a wildlife video where they rescued a crow from a vegetable garden net. The wing feathers were so mangled, they used steam to get them back into shape, which I thought was so interesting! So great to see you and the birbs.

Hey Brock i really like what and how you do for the birds. probs for this. i just noticed once more how nervous beatrix gets from being outside the cage. but that she sometimes hopps on your arm is really nice to see.. to me it looks like she´d like to get closer and doesnt know how to do and how to behave then. its heartbreaking and super nice at the same time. so.. its just an idea.. but.. what if she had a cage in the living room where she could take part of your actions and having that cage to feel saver.? after some time you could just keep the door open, that she can decide what and when.. then, if it works out, you could start taking parts off the cage... that her save space stays what it is but slowly opens. i know, its a long way there.. and just an empathic idea from germany :)

All you can do is keep showing Beatrix love and patience. She will come around. She was heavily abused....that's the truth...calling it like it is. Locked in a cage for guinea pigs and afraid to come out. She was terrorized. It is a blessing that she has you now. Baby steps in trust.

How do they "taste" anything? Seems their tongue is to slender for tasting, and fruit like the figs don't have juice they can squeeze out with the tip of their beaks.

I don't know about toucans, but humans have taste receptors in different areas of the mouth, not just the tongue, that help with taste. If there are taste receptors all along the inside of the beak, they can probably taste just fine. Saliva probably helps too. There's apparently a common myth that birds don't salivate, but they actually do, just not as much as other animals.
