I was/am a Patti Labelle fan and Redd, my best friend, was a Diana Ross fanatic! He LOVED Diana Ross. And I will never forget July 12, 1999. I was working in my office with the radio playing lightly when I got the call that Redd had passed. It was such a sudden shock and as the office staff scrambled to get me a scotch and to sit me down, wouldn't you know it: THIS song came on the radio at that exact time and it felt as if I had been stabbed in the heart but then a gentle peace came over me and I realized that my friend and I didn't "have tomorrow / but we had yesterday." And my friend was always the one who would say that "nothing good's gonna last forever", so let's just "be glad for the time together"!! In the years that have passed since that day in July 1999, this song has come to mean so much to me. I can remember driving with Redd on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in my 97 Acura TL with all the windows open, with that great 90s music playing and now I remember "we used to laugh at the wind behind us" and would talk of running away and hoping "that time wouldn't try to find us." And now, nearly 23 years since Redd's passing, I realize that he and I indeed took "each other / to a place where no one's ever been" and that together, "we walked with a dream to hold and we could take what take what the world was giving" because together, we were so strong, so determined, so young, and so lucky and blessed to have each other. I would be so grateful if there was just one more time that he "touched me in the morning" even if he "then just walked away." Redd is gone, and "we don't have tomorrow. But [we sure as hell] had yesterday"!!!! I love and miss you, Redd aka Harold Lafrank Wilson of Lincoln Projects, Harlem, NY.
