Nice hack! I just realized that my phone has touch sensitivity that is used when you have a screen cover. It works with my gloves :)

A couple of observations: if the spray can soak through so can rain. Periodically, I rewax my gloves to keep them waterproof. Also, your gloves look pretty thin. When it comes to bikewear the priority is protection, surely. Protective motorcycle gloves are thicker and much less delicate. I too use my phone and have a touch screen pen attached to a ski-pass holder clipped to my jacket. Top tip: I have a second ski-pass holder with a plastic name card holder (the kind handed out at business functions) in which I keep my credit card for toll booths and fuel stops.

It is probably not necessary to get the graphite through the leather to your finger. There are also conductive stickers that can be put on the fingertips of the gloves. They also work without contacting the finger. I tried it with a piece of aluminium foil and that worked too (but badly). Graphite has the disadvantage to soil everything you touch. So if you touch your jeans with that glove, you will get black spots. I wonder if it works after applying an addidional layer of clear paint. I mean, touch screens also work with a protective plastic film.

GENIUS! It makes total sense. The part that throws me off is how can graphite be a lubricant!
@GoldwingDocs
@GoldwingDocs 2 жыл бұрын
Because it's slippery! :) Pencils are made of graphite. Take a pencil and use it to scribble a large dark spot on a piece of paper. Then rub your finger across the spot and feel how slippery it is...

Looks like a great hack. I'm going to get some graphite spray and try it. Thanks very much! BTW, PTFE spray is also a brilliant dry lube, and is non-conductive for when you need to maintain electrical insulation. Obviously no good for this hack :)

Just came upon this video, and it was interesting as I have been down this rabbit hole myself. My favourite warm weather ventilated glove has little nodules all over the palm and finger of the material to give it traction on the grip. I purchased the liquid that you can coat on the glove, but because of these raised bumps, the coating is ineffective. I think I am going to have to go the conductive thread route and try to ensure a build up of thread on the finger tips that will sit higher than the bumps. My leather cold riding gloves are no problem with the conductive liquid.

I've tried the conductive thread as well, and it does work - but honestly, give the graphite spray a try, I suspect you might find it works quite well for you!

@@GoldwingDocs I can't see how this will soak through leather but I will definitely be giving it a go on my leather gloves! Just a word of caution regarding using graphite to lube ignition locks/barrels: Locksmiths hate the stuff as it builds up in the barrels where the excess has no place to go preventing 1) proper insertion of the key, and 2) the tumblers fully extending or retracting, while sometimes (as in my case) causing the barrel being stuck in between positions due to the tumbler operation becoming jammed as well as the key seizing in the barrel! After being berated by the locksmith and $400 AUD later, mine was repaired and I had learned an expensive and humiliating lesson ! This also goes for throttle, brake and clutch cables. While very slippery, graphite can also build up in and around cable strands making them eventually bind up inside the cable race/tube. Further, mixing graphite with oil already lubricating the cables (even oily residue) will very quickly create a sticky paste making things much worse -Silicone lube is often recommended as substitute for oil on cables that may be affected by cold but ALWAYS CHECK your service/workshop repair manual. It is always best to follow the manufacturer's recommendations/service guides when performing ANY service task on your bike - when something goes wrong with any of the above, the outcome is often unforgiving on the bike or on you.

It's never come off at all for me. I've used it for its intended purpose many times, and it goes on like spray paint! Once the carrier evaporates, it's completely dry and doesn't go away. On very rainy days my fingertip, inside the glove, got a little dark from it, but I've never seen it smear anywhere.
