Such a great song by Don McLean! It is his tribute to the sad life of the painter Vincent Van Gogh. He suffered from depression & committed suicide. He never saw any success during his life. But now his paintings are worth millions of dollars.

Just one of the overwhelming amount of injustices in this world..... But when resurrected to the "new earth" ( Revelation 21 :1-5the Bible ) with no more tears or suffering, hell get to live the life he should have. I'm happy to think of him and the other sufferers, ones as beautiful as Vincent, getting to have their second chance in a finer world!

Vincent moved to France for a girl and joined up with an artist group. She rejected him and the other artists did too. His brother was supporting him but cut him off too. And when no hope was left in sight, on that starry starry night, you took your life as lovers often do, I could have told you Vincent, this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.

The genius of Vincent by Don McLean is genius. Van Gogh is a genius lost in sadness and depression. Vincent felt lost, and Longley in the world misunderstood him, and he committed suicide. Sadly, he never saw any that praised or had an appreciation for his work during his life. But now, he is praised, and his paintings are worth millions of dollars. What a fantastic tribute in lyrical poetry by Don McLean to give him. Now, they might understand.

If memory serves, this was written in the "voice" of Vincent van Gogh's brother, speaking to the artist after Vincent committed suicide. Also, all the background pictures were van Gogh's creations. Incredible song, performed incredibly well. A true classic!

Wow! You couldn't have reacted to this song any better. I truly enjoyed your knowledge on what Don McLean's tribute song was saying.. Most don't. When this song came out in '72 I knew Van Gogh was a famous artist but didn't know his body of work. Once I learned about him and saw his art, the song made perfect sense and I realized the beauty of it.

Starry Night is a painting by Van Gogh of his view from his room at the sanitorium. The stars in it represent those who locked him up looking down on him (Like Joseph with the coat of many colors and his 11 brothers in the Biblical story). There is a lot more to the painting Starry Night. When I first read about it, it was like an epiphany. It's worth looking into

The circumstances of Vincent’s death are by no means clear. He returned to his room at an inn in Auvers-Sur-Oise (where he was seeing a doctor for his depression) one evening with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He lingered a day or more before he died and did not disclose the circumstances of how he was shot. There is some speculation that it may have been inflicted by a young boy, possibly playing with a gun or with malicious intent. We’ll never know, but shooting yourself in the gut isn’t the most efficient way to off yourself. You should read Lust For Life, a beautiful biography of Van Gogh presented in narrative form. He was entirely devoted to his art and his brother Theo, an art dealer in Paris, supported him but ultimately only sold one of his paintings before he died.

I love your reaction and understanding that Vincent just wanted them to listen to what he was trying to say. Don McClean depicts and presents this beautifully. An iconic song. I really feel for people in the future musically. I like to TRY & listen to rap but the words are a jumble, the message can't be understood. I think lyrics are needed for us to understand what they are trying to say so WE can hear their message.
