Touhou 19: Introducing the Full Character Roster!

With the release of Touhou 19 comes a flood of new characters, storylines, and lore! In this video, I introduce the newly-revealed character roster, covering their backstories, and possibly making some friends along the way! What has Zun concocted this time, and who's best girl? (It's Biten)

We also finally got the canon interaction/pairing of seeing the similar/opposing youkai meet each other in Ran/Tsukasa (foxes) and Ran/Mamizou (Kitsune and Tanuki) , and by proxy that Chen/Orin have hung out many times - hopefully we can see some interaction of those two plus Mike in the future (maybe add Shou there to for the full cat quartet)

Hisami has such a pretty character design. The fact that she's canonically stated to be in love with another onscreen character- not just ambiguously- but LITERALLY in love is also crazy. She's definitely my favorite out of the new characters.

The more I read about Hisami, the more I came to like her. Zun made a character equal parts scary and heartwarming, which is a HUGE accomplishment

@@akiradkcn so far, the localized transcript of her profile in the touhou wiki states she's in love with her boss. time will tell whether we're meant to take that in literal face value. yet the fact that it's even mentioned is crazy for a canonical touhou character

the actual Japanese is closer to "admires" rather than "has a crush on"... as another person said, ZUN isn't interested in adding romance. ...of course, that doesn't mean you can't ship it, but it's not actually canon... -liking to get yelled at by her does add to Hisami having more of a crush I guess, but all that is said is she admires Zanmu-

With the theorized zodiac theme, as well as Nazrin, Seiran and Aunn appearing in early roster, I suspected Ran or Tsukasa (got both anyway), Orin. ...And with her omnipresence these days, Mamizou. Also, the faction leaders, as well. Suika was a surprise, but with the same argument as you present here, a welcome one, no doubt. 😸

One of my favorite parts about every new mainline touhou game is we get to see ZUN's art evolutions or new interpretations (of course, along with how funky he designs new characters too). Mamizou looks so cool ever since she last appeared in ZUN-style. Ran was a nice surprise and she looks great in her new appearance. Suika's wonderful in ZUN's art style but also a fangame I played gave her brown hair so I guess this is now the third hair color I've seen for her (ginger, brown, and now blonde). Also, Biten best new character. We can finally return to monke in touhou.

I strongly disagree. I find his new art style horrible and they look even more soulless than the very first PC 98 ones. Also that it's still not improving in terms of adding playable guys just to stick to the ponder of the male fanbase is silly in today's time. (Aside from Rinnosuke who was somewhat somehow somewhen important)

He stated he wanted to make Myouren (Byakuren's brother who the Myouren Temple is named) the final boss of Touhou 12 but didn't to keep the tradition of a full female cast, which wasn't made to satisfy the male audience, it was more because ZUN couldn't draw men. There's really nothing deep about it more than ZUN being a dork when doing these games, which we love as his games fans lol.

I initially thought she could be a mountain deva too, but I've seen people mention how the Devas came LONG before the Sengoku period when Zanmu was born, so they may still be unknown. Here's hoping we get answers soon :')

I had allocated room where my heart used to be for the return of Mima-sama but, alas, it wasn't meant to be this time. Man, I _ really_ wish these had EX stages to accomodate her... [ _eeevil sniff_ ] No worries - there's ALWAYS Touhou 20 ! *>:]* Regardless, I am quite happy about this roster. I knew a cat would make it in but never expected it to be my fave - Orin (I expected ZUN to go for the more recent Mike) ! I called it with Mamizou and Yachie-san (also faves o' mine) . Happy for the floofy tails & poofy hat fans too. Outside of Mima-sama, I wish there had been some kind of bug participation in this game. Momoyo , Wriggle or Eternity would have been cool, imho (I like Seiran but would've taken any of the aforementioned over her) . A character from left field would have this title even more special. Say - Nue or Satori .

So uh, silly story. I was watching someone stream touhou 19 3 days ago, but I had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA that it was out. I thought it was a fangame or something because Suika and Ran were in it. It took me a whole 30 MINUTES TO REALIZE it was the actual touhou 19... I guess that took a lot of the suprise from me because I was so incredibly unsure if it was a fangame or not.

Hmm I feel that Touhou 14 has no representative in this game even though the other post PoFV non-spinoff games (Touhou 10-13, 15-18) has a representative from each game. Kagerou and maybe Wakasagihime could both fit in this game since they're both animal-based.

That is a rumor of no real substance. It is true that the waters of PC98 Touhou are murky, but it is not like it is particularly believable that there wouldn't be a way. I mean, the OST releases literally gave us TH4-Mima on the cover art, which is a version of her that didn't even exist before.
