Touhou: Concealed the Conclusion - Extra Stage (Commentary & Translation)

Flying demons, and danmaku. One day seen in a dream, a spirit world with a familiar atmosphere...... Without doubt it was also Gensokyo.
Welcome to the extra stage of a newly reformed Gensokyo. There is a lot of variation in the enemies attacks here however they always come at you one at a time...now that I think about it similar in design to the very first extra stage in Touhou 2...Anyways that means all you have to do is learn what to do for each enemy type and you're golden.
Suika as a mid boss is a little tricky at first, but once you start playing this stage a lot she becomes little more than a side note. Aside from her third spell being tricky at times you have no business dying to her here.
Suika as a boss however is extremely difficult if you don't know what you're doing. Contrary to how drunkenly unpredictable she may have been in IaMP her spell cards here are bizarrely complex. You will need to make good use of your Hakurei bombs to make it through her onslaught of spells however if you're going to use that strategy the most important thing to keep in mind is to not die. Dying will reset your Hakurei gauge and force you to capture the next spell card in order to refill it, and there are few instances whee that's applicable.

So that's how it goes. Must've been a rough experience if they were still being warded after Gensokyo disappeared. Thankfully what memories Marisa held on to managed to open up Reimu, and that she had someone else that remembers. Suika having to be a god despite her inexperience is a fun touch. Almost all her spellcards are classic youkai stuffs, and some even being from future canon games (Nue's Heiankyou, Chimimoryodomo being related to Mamizou's Hundred Demon Parade(?) in ULiL). That's a neat coincidence

[4:13] I'm pretty sure that "bit" was actually the midboss Suika. It would explain why she was "looking for" Marisa here, not to mention that she only says a singular "bit." Also, it's kinda baffling how danmaq predicted UFO and UNL with these spell names. [SPOILERS AHEAD] So "Reimu" and "Marisa" were roomates/coworkers in real life? Interesting. I was wondering what set Marisa apart in that she was able to oppose Reimu directly in stage 6. I was hypothesizing that she embodied Reimu's reluctance to wake up, which kinda made sense? Hopefully what I say below is actually coherent and I'm not totally misreading what's really happening... However, this does raise the question of how Marisa accidentally entered the dream and took control of a figment of Reimu's imagination (regardless of if said figment was based off of the real-world Marisa or not). If Reimu and Marisa are actually sharing dreams, then Marisa must have more influence than she thinks (Is that how this works? Is this ever explained?) I don't think she's entering the dream physically (or at least I assume so), because how would that even happen? Also her clothes change. Then again, how would she be able to take a piece of Suika with her out of the dream then? I'm usually a lore junkie, but I'm not sure if I should try to figure this out or not. I guess it's a different interpretation of dreaming... I might need to wait until the Phantasm Stage to get all the info I can, then update this comment. Update: yeah, there was nothing relevant in the phantasm stage. Actually, there was one particular line ("this could be someone else's dream") suggesting that danmaq _deliberately_ made it to be cryptic and impossible to judge.

If I remember correctly, and _boy is this game an oldie,_ the leading interpretation is that both were in a coma, and this is a "waking up from a long dream" situation. Heh, geez, this is some really nostalgic stuff here... I think there was even a kimiko muffin comic made for it! ...oh god the Nekokayou comics were a thing. God, the nostalgia.

Okay, the coma explanation actually makes a lot more sense, considering the oddly specific mention of Marisa being from "the neighboring bed" and the fact that the dream seemed to last for so long. Still, it doesn't explain how exactly they were sharing the dream, but that may be me reading a little too far into it.

@@Flygoniaks That's kinda the thing, yeah. Reimu is lucid, Marisa isn't. And of course Stage 6 Reimu would never think for a second that they are sharing a dream exactly because of that.

I know I'm literally 5 years late but if you read the spellcard descriptions for Reimu's spellcards in stage 6, it actually states that the "real world" version of Marisa was NOT originally part of the dream. I'm paraphrasing here but it basically says that Marisa was also a figment of Reimu's imagination and that she truly was the only person in the dream. However, in the description of spell card 324 (Hakurei Dispersion Barrier ~ Lunatic) it states that "At best, she could synchronize her dream with the dream of someone outside the dream and insert Marisa's memories into that dream." In spellcard 326's description (Hakurei Lattice Barrier) it says that in the end, Reimu was only able to copy Marisa's memories out of the dream, but was unable to transfer her soul, body, or mind. The descriptions of spellcards 327-332 just detail the final moments of Gensokyo, and how the youkai agreed that if there was no saving Gensokyo, they should at least try to leave a mark so that someone would know Gensokyo actually existed. The "real world Marisa" that is shown in ending 3 is actually just the person who recieved Marisa's memories, and not the same person as the Marisa that existed in Gensokyo. This also kind of makes sense if you tie it into the bad ending (ending 1), where the person who recieved Marisa's memories is instead a school girl who eventually forgets them. I don't really know how to explain it, but the way to get ending 1 is to run out of time during Reimu's fight. Marisa's memories being transferred into some random school girl that would forget them makes sense because unlike in ending 2, where Reimu was able to plan the memory transfer and use the powers of the youkai to help make it happen, she had to instead do it immediately or otherwise face death without Gensokyo's memories ever being known to the outside world.

As for how "Marisa" managed to take a piece of Suika out of the dream, I have no clue. I'll try doing a little more digging but in the meantime I hope my other explanation helped at least a little bit.

I mean, despite not being exactly specified by the time this game was released, Suika IS one of the Big Four Of The Mountain after all. It's kinda in her nature to aid in Gensokyo's stability, no matter how infrequent those opportunities arise, because, yknow, Yukari just exists.

Just beat the game on at least Normal without continuing and get the good ending. Keep in mind, that means you need to at least make it to Reimu's final spell (not necessarily beat it though). If you run out of time in the middle of Reimu's fight it won't count and you'll get the bad ending

You also need to unlock at least 81 different spell cards for spell card practice, plus you need to attempt Lunatic with your choice shot type. Though even then you might run into issues, I've heard and seen many people say doing everything that should be requires _still_ didn't unlock Phantasm. So if that's the case, the download I have in the description has Phantasm unlocked.
