extra stages are significantly easier to beat than Lunatic mode, it just takes practice and knowing some typical tricks you can see in many "how to touhou" videos

The only exception to that is SoEW, mostly because Extra fucks with your resources. Sure, the stage lasts maybe like 10 minutes instead of 30 of the main game and this is the one Extra boss that isn't immune to bombs, but SoEW difficulties don't change much (Hard adds second slow bullet to everything and Lunatic speeds things up + revenge bullets) and with SoEW's Extra resource setting, you also get like 10-12 bombs through 8 lives (depending on how much you abuse the "last life has 2 more bombs" quirk) instead of the 10 lives and like 34 bombs in the main game. You will quickly learn the pain of having your bomb count reduced by basically 66%.

Currently on Touhou 4 and 5. I could write an essay about why I'm not too fond of Touhou 1, 2, 3 but like Touhou 4 but i don't have the time for that right now, lol. Flandre is chill tbh and not the crazy maniac that she's portrayed as. Her extra stage wasn't too bad but she herself is challenging, however i don't really plan on beating her. I guess that's all i have to say here as I haven't played anything past 6 yet, xd

Yep 1 2 and 3 are garbage, 1 isn't even an bullet hell and when I played I had to gitter click my key board for like 10 hour until I finally beat it, then 2 and 3 don't even have a focus mode, the music are fire tho

PCB's phantasm stage is pretty much just a buffed (for the most part) version of its extra stage. and as it turns out, if you're demoted from extra stage boss to midboss, you get to keep the bomb shield if you're staying in the same game. it does *not,* however, persist if your demotion happens between games.

Here's a quick guide on how to beat up a little girl, an old hag and an immortal human: 1) EoSD Extra The first wave, the fairies with blue pellets, is aimed. It's basically a route where, though I think there's multiple approaches to it. Ideally you end this wave in upper right corner The second wave, the faires with red bullets. Ideally you speedkill them by moving from one side to another in such a way that none of them get to fire anything, though some will probably slip. Collect power items while killing the follow-up waves. Preferably you hit 128 at the very last fairy that spawns on the edge of the screen (0:43), so that you can power cancel the vomit that's about to happen. The thing after the vomit is less chaotic, it's just dodging, killing things and not running into things. The fairy before Patchouli is an asshole, she can't die until she stops firing. A good place to bomb, really. Silent Selene can be a bitch because Patchouli either cooperates and doesn't move out of your range or moves to the other side of the world as you're trying to not die. Royal Flare is always the same, you basically have to memo how it works. If you can't, just bomb. Philosopher's Stone is micrododging and knowing your hitbox. (also funny that Patchouli is C-tier in SRW, because in IMaP she breaks the story mode in half with her 5A and Royal Flare, it's so hilariously overpowered. obviously less overpowered when playing against a real human, but still) The massive red spam after Patchouli is aimed. You have to move in a particular way so that you don't get cornered; usually I stay close to the walls and move in a U-like pattern. Then it's the blue pellets again. The books are mostly random (red pellets) with some aimed (blue pellets). It's the kind of shit where you should focus on your surroundings and only move if you see something about to hit you, as most pellets from books won't come anywhere near you. And then more aimed blue pellets (the 1up is dropped from the last wave that spawns on right side) Most of Flandre nons aren't too bad... except non2. I hate it with passion. Cranberry Tap is aimed+static and honestly it's probably best to focus on dodging and seeing if anything is a bout to hit you, only correcting yourself to hit Flandre during the less chaotic waves (especially since homing gets fucked and attacks the familiars lol). Laevateinn is a route; the stronger shot can one cycle it. It's the kind of thing you just do once you memorize it. Spell3 is dodging when needed, since most of the pellets don't go towards you. Fuck the mentos though, EoSD mentos are evil and it's so easy to clip into mentos in EoSD. Spell4 is just reading and dodging with some RNG, as Flandre's movement is random. Spell5 is a meme where there's only two solutions: the spin or the bottomhug. I still have no idea how to spin Maze of Love despite clearing with all 4 shots lol. Spell6 has a safespot under the N in Enemy marker, but if you're doing it legit then it's basically another wave of reading and finding your way out through the waves. Spell7 is more reading and dodging things, featuring bubbles AND mentos. The typical strategy is to stay around the lower right corner to minimalize the amount of bullets that actually come towards you. Still kinda ass. Spell8 is a route, though you can do it faster if you realize the lasers work like the Patchouli stuff and don't have hitbox while they're spawning or despawning. Spell9 is the survival and it's mostly routing plus some actual reflexes towards the end when it becomes fast. The final spell is just pure dodging and reading, a "hope you know your hitbox by now" onslaught. 2) Phantasm... is for most part just juiced up Extra (or more like, Extra is easier Phantasm) The red/blue wave is aimed, either at you or to your sides. The green vomit is also aimed, but that one is a bit harder to efficiently route. I thinkkkk ReimuA can cheese it via moving to specific spots before each wave spawns due to her 360 degree homing, but it's been a while. The blue bullets after that are static+aimed, so more routing. Depending on shot a type, you might want to do like U-shape streaming. The fairies that throw shit you after that are basically speedkilling until they start showing up in groups of 4, where you have to take advantage of a gap in their vomit and move in a specific way (the blue wave is a mirror of the green one) The red/blue is once again aimed. Ran's non is two aimed waves followed by two static ones. Mostly about positioning yourself in such a way that you can dodge the aimed wave without running into the pellets from the static ones; the movement of Ran herself is random so the specific way to do so varies from attempt to attempt. Ran's sp1 is superfree, it's just streaming and restreaming when needed. The Chen's version in Extra is so much more difficult lmao. Ran's sp2 is a route, where you switch between being on lower part and upper part of screens at specific points; it's hard to describe. Also yes, Ran is the only midboss immune to bombs lol. A lot of shit after Ran is aimed. The return of the quarter gang, red/blue aimed stuff... And green vomit. The only not aimed thing are the yellow bullets, which is basically just pure dodging. Honestly, worth bombing, the Phantasm version is actually kinda hard. The sudden PC-98 moment of pre-boss bullets is a route, since it's all aimed at you from very specific points and you get time to react. Yukari's nons are mostly aimed I think? With some static bullets thrown here and there. Curse of Dreams and Reality is careful streaming; the blue is aimed while the green is static and it alternates sides. Motion and Stillness is a route, though some shots can get away with less complex routes. The bullet spawners spawn at your position, so it's useful to divide lower part of screen into like 3x2 grid and move between the "slots" in the grid so that spawners are distributed all around it. Mesh of Light and Darkness is about positioning yourself in such a way that you have how to dodge the bullets and don't get cornered by lasers. Also lasers can't be removed by bomb or border, I have died too many times because of that lol, they just disappear on their own after a while. Xanadu of Straight and Curve is reading the bubbles and moving through them as needed (remember, white outline is safe, it's the dark core that kills you). Honestly, this spell is a joke compared to Extra version (as a lot of Extra spells are similar to Phantasm spells, but not all). Charming Siege is a fucking monster of a spell that walls you very easily, while this one is rather straightforward. Spell5 is kinda funky; since she follows you, you just have to alternate between attacking and running away from her bullets (Yukari herself loses hitbox for that spell, thankfully). Spell6 is a route but it's like 99% free once you learn. Spell7 is reading and pure dodging and probably one of the harder ones in the fight. Spell8 is baiting the attacks to line up the main layer into easily dodgeable lanes (and making sure you don't run into the few static projectiles) Spell9 is survival and it's mostly a route until the final phase where it's minimalistic dodging. Spell10 is just reading and dodging where it gets more complex the less health it has. If you've been very methodical about collecting items in Phantasm, you should hit 800 extend somewhere around here, meaning you can get one more life compared to Extra. ...Normally this is where Extra ends, but Yukari stretches the stage for one final spell which is just one giant survival memorization fest and honestly the kind of shit you just have to learn by watching others do it. If you have enough resources to tank 5 waves (for example, Sakuya with at least one extra life), this is the place to do that. Also because Yukari is a cunt, she stops her final attack and its timer during your s, so you have to tank/bomb the wave as it approaches you, not when she's spawning bullets.

Fun fact: I had to split this in half because the entire thing is too big for KZbin as just one comment lol. 3) IN Extra The white pellets in beginning are aimed. Best way to dodge them is vertically; Border Team has easiest time where they can just vertically stream from their starting point and get like all of the dropped items if they time it right. The bunnies with pink bullets are speedkilling, you just have to remember that they show up at given points and set yourself up for murder. The wave with a lot of familiars is also more speedkilling and using PoC to grab items after the 2nd and 4th one. Then it's the opening wave once again, but this time you have more power so depending on shot type they might be easier. More pink bullet bunnies. Then two waves from bottom that shoot bullets that eventually scatter. Focus on one side (might be able to kill both with some shots). More pink bullet bunnies. The pellets from opener again, but this time it's upside down. Then it's a large lane of pink bullet bunnies; just speedkill them, as leftover bullets will disappear as midboss shows up and focus on getting as many items from them as possible. Keine's spell1 and spell3 work the same, where the initial wave is static and the red bullets are aimed and you basically have to stream to avoid red bullets while also making sure to not run into the other bullets. If you really feel like it, you can just wait until bullets get close to you and bomb each of them. Spell 2 is about reading and moving through the gaps as they open up. It's the kind of spell that shoots from bottom so you want to be higher. It's way easier than the two spells honestly. Then it's the bullets that scatter around... but intertwined with a mirrored version! Could be worse, honestly. Pink bullet bunnies once again... And now the return of enemies with a lot of familairs. Again, speedkill and if you can, grab items with PoC. ...Typing this, I realize how simple IN Extra is compared to like EoSD or PCB. Many waves are the same, just in different configurations. The jellybean wave is mostly aimed. First it comes from left, then right, then static vertical lanes, then rings (just don't move for the pink rings so they open up a nice wave), then left and right agian. After that, the final set of pink bullet bunnies and the death fairy. Death fairy is... a thing. If you're playing as Border Team, you can just cheese it by hugging lower left corner. It's a tiny blind spot that only their smaller hitbox can use. Other teams just have to deal with her and micrododge her shit (or just bomb honestly). Mokou nons use amulets, which have rather forgiving hitbox. They start out free but they get eventually harder, until the final non which fucks you up man. Mokou's spell1 is fucking absolutely cursed for a first spell, I almost never cap it. It's a route, I think? Spell2 is streaming, and then restreaming as the massive wave clears up, so you don't get walled as the cycle repeats. Spell3 is weird honestly. Mostly free, you just have to move through the gaps as they approach you. Spell4 is streaming, though Border Team's small hitbox comes to rescue again, where if you bottomhug, you can completely ignore the blue waves (I think other teams can also do that, but it's way more precise with them iirc???) and only focus on dodging the red waves. Spell5 is one of the weirdest one in series, it's a puzzle spell that becomes free once you figure it out. Spell6 is aimed except for the first wave in a cycle, though the way it spawns means you'll have to micrododge some of it. Spell7 is just dodging and "hitbox moment" where things look like they should have hit you, but actually didn't. After spell7, prepare to throw bombs because the final, eight nonspellcard is a monster. It's superfast rings, and dodging them is stupid hard. If you're just doing a normal clear, don't bother dodging it, it's not worth it. Spell8 is misdirecting the main barrage and when you get to the other side, micrododging through the secondary barrage so you can start the cycle again. Spell9 is survival. Once again it's a route, though the only phase that takes time to learn is the 2nd one with blue bullets (I just bomb my way through it). Final spell is mostly aimed, with static in the final layer.

@@Dukstless Fujiyama Volcano still haunts me in my dreams, that thing is absolutely ridiculous and I only ever cap it like twice during practice from literally nothing but sheer luck But I never found Mokous first spell to be that cursed, I cap it pretty consistently somehow The survival and final wasn't as bad but in my winning attempt I fricked up survivals blue star bullet phase, somehow I just can't do the dance consistently. Last spell was arguably not so bad, I only died like 4 times on it before beating Mokou
